dc.description.abstract | An English translation of the "De augmentis scientiarum" which is an enlargement, translated into Latin, of Bacon's "The advancement of learning", 1605. Part 1 of the projected "Instauratio magna". Running title reads: Of the aduancement of learning. Includes indexes. This edition has a cancel letterpress title page and colophon is dated 1640. A variant issue (STC 1167.3) has colophon dated 1640. Another variant issue has colophon dated M.DC.XXXIX (STC 1167). At least R2,3, X1.4, Y1-4, and 2A1,4 are in at least two settings, indiscriminately mixed. Signatures: pi² [par.]⁴ 2[par.]² 3[par.]1 A² B-C⁴ 2a-2g⁴ 2h² [cross]⁴ 2[cross]² ² [cross]1 ² A-3Q⁴ 3R² .
