BACKGROUND INFO (for all participants)
Imagine you are a teacher in a high school or junior high.
You have received a request from the principal to advise him on a
question concerning the academic career of one of your students.
The parents of this student named Lee have made it clear to the
principal that they believe Lee to be of superior intelligence and
that he should be placed in an accelerated college-prep program
for the coming year. They contend that their child's true
abilities are being stifled in the regular classes and that his
grades do not reflect his real intellectual talents.
The principal wants to hear your point of view on the
advisability of complying with the wishes of the parents. You and
several of your colleagues have been called to the principal's
office to discuss this matter. Each of you has Lee in one or . . .

Transcript of Chinese Group Discussion
October 15, 1987
This is the transcript of a discussion group of Chinese speaking
graduate students in the department of Education at the
University of Florida. They are role-playing teachers in
conference with their principal to discuss the future of "Lee",
their student. They were aware that they were being taped since
the recorder was in front of them.
The person playing the principal has lived in the US for three
years, Speaker A two years; speaker B for six; speakers C and D
each for one.
A parallel roleplay by native speakers of English is also
available.
