THE LANGUAGE :
In the Bongo-Baka group of Central Sudanic languages in the
Nilo-Saharan family. Also referred to in literature as Jur
Beli. Spoken in the northern part of Mundri District,
Western Equatoria Province, Sudan. For phonemic description

Young men and fellows, my story begins here. There was once
an elder called Arowa, who had a wife called Yawa. They
only had one son and they named him G]li. But right from
the time of his birth this boy would not let ordinary people
see him. He spent all his days in an elevated hut and only
came out at night.

His father's relatives engaged a rather badly behaved girl
called Ny"is"ey"i to marry this G]li. They abducted the girl
and brought her home to him. Then all their family came and
held a wedding feast.

One day this Ny"is"ey"i went off to do the sort of work which
new wives always do. She set off to colect firewood with
one of her little sisters-in-law. While they were in the
woods she asked her sister-in-law, <<What is your brother's
name?>>

The girl replied, <<Oh, so that's your way is it? You want
to swear by your husband's name. Don't you have any lovers?
Can't you swear on their names?>>
