$SCENE: $A ROOM IN A TENEMENT HOUSE IN $HILLJOY $SQUARE, $DUBLIN.
$SOME HOURS ELAPSE BETWEEN THE TWO ACTS.
$THE PERIOD OF THE PLAY IS $MAY, 1920.
(($A $RETURN $ROOM IN A TENEMENT HOUSE IN $HILLJOY $SQUARE. $AT THE BACK
TWO LARGE WINDOWS LOOKING OUT INTO THE YARD; THEY OCCUPY
PRACTICALLY THE WHOLE OF THE BACK WALL SPACE. $BETWEEN THE WINDOWS
IS A CUPBOARD, ON THE TOP OF WHICH IS A PILE OF BOOKS. $THE DOORS
ARE OPEN, AND ON THESE ARE HANGING A NUMBER OF COLLARS AND TIES.
$RUNNING PARALLEL WITH THE WINDOWS IS A STRETCHER BED;
ANOTHER RUNS AT RIGHT ANGLES ALONG THE WALL AT RIGHT.
$AT THE HEAD OF THIS BED IS A DOOR LEADING TO THE REST
OF THE HOUSE. $THE WALL ON THE LEFT RUNS DIAGONALLY,
SO THAT THE FIREPLACE- WHICH IS IN THE CENTRE-
IS PLAINLY VISIBLE. $ON THE MANTELSHELF TO THE RIGHT
IS A STATUE OF THE $VIRGIN, TO THE LEFT A STATUE OF
THE $SACRED $HEART, AND IN THE CENTRE
A CRUCIFIX. $AROUND THE FIREPLACE
ARE A FEW COMMON COOKING UTENSILS. $IN THE CENTRE OF THE ROOM IS A
TABLE, ON WHICH AR . . .
