AVIS DE L'AUTEUR
Quoique j'eusse pu inse/rer dans mes Me/moires
les aventures du malheureux Chevalier Des Grieux,
il m'a semble/ que n'y ayant point un rapport ne/cessaire,
le Lecteur trouverait plus de satisfaction a\ les voir ici
se/pare/ment. Un re/cit de cette longueur aurait inter-
rompu trop longtemps le fil de ma propre histoire.
Tout e/loigne/ que je suis de pre/tendre dans cet ouvrage
a\ la qualite/ d'e/crivain exact, je n'ignore point qu'une
narration doit e#tre quelquefois de/charge/e de quantite/
de circonstances qui la rendraient pesante et embar-
rasse/e. C'est le pre/cepte d'Horace:

Il n'est pas me#me besoin d'une si grave autorite/ pour
prouver une ve/rite/ si simple, car le bon sens est la pre-
mie\re source de ces sortes de re\gles. Si le public a trouve/
quelque chose d'agre/able, et d'inte/ressant dans l'his-
toire de ma vie, j'os . . .
