            <p>Users should be aware of the process of creating the TCP texts, and therefore of any assumptions that can be made about the data.</p>
            <p>Text selection was based on the New Cambridge Bibliography of English Literature (NCBEL). If an author (or for an anonymous work, the title) appears in NCBEL, then their works are eligible for inclusion. Selection was intended to range over a wide variety of subject areas, to reflect the true nature of the print record of the period. In general, first editions of a works in English were prioritized, although there are a number of works in other languages, notably Latin and Welsh, included and sometimes a second or later edition of a work was chosen if there was a compelling reason to do so.</p>
            <p>Image sets were sent to external keying companies for transcription and basic encoding. Quality assurance was then carried out by editorial teams in Oxford and Michigan. 5% (or 5 pages, whichever is the greater) of each text was proofread for accuracy and those which did not meet QA standards were returned to the keyers to be redone. After proofreading, the encoding was enhanced and/or corrected and characters marked as illegible were corrected where possible up to a limit of 100 instances per text. Any remaining illegibles were encoded as &lt;gap&gt;s. Understanding these processes should make clear that, while the overall quality of TCP data is very good, some errors will remain and some readable characters will be marked as illegible. Users should bear in mind that in all likelihood such instances will never have been looked at by a TCP editor.</p>
            <p>The texts were encoded and linked to page images in accordance with level 4 of the TEI in Libraries guidelines.</p>
            <p>Copies of the texts have been issued variously as SGML (TCP schema; ASCII text with mnemonic sdata character entities); displayable XML (TCP schema; characters represented either as UTF-8 Unicode or text strings within braces); or lossless XML (TEI P5, characters represented either as UTF-8 Unicode or TEI g elements).</p>

            <p>IT is generally expected that there ſhould be ſome rela<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>tion between the character of the patron and the nature of the work, for which protection is ſolicited.</p>
            <p>
               <pb n="iv" facs="tcp:1205901700:3"/>BUT this law, like many others, is broken when it op<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>poſes the gratification of paſ<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>ſions too ſtrong for the re<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>ſtraints of regularity. Ambi<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>tion, which often overpowers the judgment in queſtions of more importance, has made me forget the diſproportion be<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>tween Your Lordſhip's name, and a Dramatic Paſtoral; and I have ventured to lay before You a compoſition of little dignity in the deſign, and per<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>haps of little elegance in the execution.</p>
            <p>YET for whatever we re<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>ſolve, we labour to find reaſons,

till in time we forget its impro<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>priety; I begin to hope, that by offering to Your Lordſhip a performance of an airy and luxuriant kind, which can at beſt hope only for excuſe, I expoſe myſelf leſs to the im<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>putation of arrogance, than if I had prefixed Your name to a piece more grave and oftenta<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>tious, which might have been ſuſpected of pretending to ap<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>probation.</p>
            <p>I am, my Lord, far from imagining that any of my ideas can be new to Your extenſive knowledge, or that I have at<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>tained any beauties of ſtyle or

ſentiment adequate to Your delicacy of taſte. The merit of this Poem is but ſmall in my own opinion, and yet, of the lit<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>tle praiſe which it may receive, I muſt reſign a part, by confeſ<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>ſing that the firſt hint was taken from the PASTOR FIDO, and that the two ſongs marked with aſteriſks <note n="†" place="bottom">See page 11, and 24.</note>, were written by another hand.</p>
            <p>WHATEVER praiſe this con<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>feſſion may detract from my abilities, it will add to my ſin<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>cerity; and I ſhould diſcover little knowledge of Your Lord<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>ſhip, if I ſhould endeavour to
