            <p>EEBO-TCP aimed to produce large quantities of textual data within the usual project restraints of time and funding, and therefore chose to create diplomatic transcriptions (as opposed to critical editions) with light-touch, mainly structural encoding based on the Text Encoding Initiative (http://www.tei-c.org).</p>
            <p>The EEBO-TCP project was divided into two phases. The 25,363 texts created during Phase 1 of the project have been released into the public domain as of 1 January 2015. Anyone can now take and use these texts for their own purposes, but we respectfully request that due credit and attribution is given to their original source.</p>
            <p>Users should be aware of the process of creating the TCP texts, and therefore of any assumptions that can be made about the data.</p>
            <p>Text selection was based on the New Cambridge Bibliography of English Literature (NCBEL). If an author (or for an anonymous work, the title) appears in NCBEL, then their works are eligible for inclusion. Selection was intended to range over a wide variety of subject areas, to reflect the true nature of the print record of the period. In general, first editions of a works in English were prioritized, although there are a number of works in other languages, notably Latin and Welsh, included and sometimes a second or later edition of a work was chosen if there was a compelling reason to do so.</p>
            <p>Image sets were sent to external keying companies for transcription and basic encoding. Quality assurance was then carried out by editorial teams in Oxford and Michigan. 5% (or 5 pages, whichever is the greater) of each text was proofread for accuracy and those which did not meet QA standards were returned to the keyers to be redone. After proofreading, the encoding was enhanced and/or corrected and characters marked as illegible were corrected where possible up to a limit of 100 instances per text. Any remaining illegibles were encoded as &lt;gap&gt;s. Understanding these processes should make clear that, while the overall quality of TCP data is very good, some errors will remain and some readable characters will be marked as illegible. Users should bear in mind that in all likelihood such instances will never have been looked at by a TCP editor.</p>
            <p>The texts were encoded and linked to page images in accordance with level 4 of the TEI in Libraries guidelines.</p>
            <p>Copies of the texts have been issued variously as SGML (TCP schema; ASCII text with mnemonic sdata character entities); displayable XML (TCP schema; characters represented either as UTF-8 Unicode or text strings within braces); or lossless XML (TEI P5, characters represented either as UTF-8 Unicode or TEI g elements).</p>

                  <p>On the 26th. Inſtant, the Tryal was put off till the 4th. of <hi>November,</hi> 1686, by reaſon the Witneſſes at <hi>Perworth,</hi> the Heralds Books at <hi>Cambridge,</hi> and other Witneſſes, did not appear. The Defendant's Council did inſiſt upon the Miſclaiming under Sir <hi>Richard Percy,</hi> which Errour is owned by the Claimant: But the Heralds Books, and Heneſt Witneſſes will remove that Scandal, ſo as the Plantiff's Pedigree will be proved clear from all Attainders, and to remain a Loyal Subject till Death.</p>

                  <p>AT a Chapter held in the Colledge of <hi>Arms,</hi> it was there found, That Sir <hi>Ingelram Percy</hi> was the Youngeſt Son of <hi>Henry Percy,</hi> Fifth Earl of <hi>Northumberland;</hi> and that Sir <hi>Ingelram</hi>'s. Siſter, <hi>Margaret Percy,</hi> was Married to <hi>Henry,</hi> Lord <hi>Clifford,</hi> the Firſt Earl of <hi>Cumberland.</hi>
                  </p>
                  <p>Then the Claimant offered to prove up to Sir <hi>Ingelram Percy,</hi> who had <hi>Henry Percy,</hi> who had <hi>Henry,</hi> who had <hi>James Percy</hi> the Claimant, by Regiſter Books and Witneſſes then attending upon the Chapter-Board.</p>
                  <p>But Sir <hi>Thomas St. George,</hi> Garter, King at Arms, ſtood up and ſaid, That they had no power to adminiſter an Oath to any Witneſſes at all, for that the <hi>Earl Marſhal</hi>'s Order was only to ſearch for what they could find in the Heralds Office: Therefore what was Propoſed, muſt be Proved at the Tryal at Law.</p>
                  <p>It is the Opinion of Council, that the Claimant ſhould have a true Copy of the Account returned to his Grace the Duke of <hi>Norfolk, Earl Marſhal</hi> of <hi>England,</hi> that thoſe Honourable Judges at the Tryal, may be throughly inform'd with the Truth of the Matter.</p>

                  <p>THE Fourth of <hi>November,</hi> 1686. the Tryal was had before Sir <hi>Henry Bedingfield,</hi> Lord Chief Juſtice of the <hi>Common Pleas;</hi> where it was moved, That the Plaintiffs Pedigree might be Proved, by reaſon Sir <hi>Thomas St. George,</hi> Garter, King at <hi>Arms,</hi> and Sir <hi>Henry,</hi> his Brother, <hi>Clarenceux,</hi> were preſent, to hear the Colateral Line Proved by Witneſſes and Regiſter-Books, ſo as they might then have the Truth to inform the <hi>Earl Marſhal</hi> of <hi>England</hi> what was found at the Law, as well as what was found in the Heralds Office. By which Anſwer to His Grace's Order, the Pedigree might have been Confirmed by a Chapter; but the Opinion of the Court, was, That the Settlement of the Lands muſt be Proved firſt; at which the Plaintiff replied, <hi>What ſignifies the Lands, if I Prove not my Pedigree:</hi> Then did the Plaintiff preſent his Records to Prove to that Effect, but the Councils would not offer them to be read, but pretended they was not prepared, which cauſed a <hi>Non-ſuit.</hi>

                  <p>Nevertheleſs, <hi>Petworth</hi> is the Ancients Seat belonging to the <hi>Percys;</hi> for that Eſtate is ſettled upon the Name of <hi>Percy,</hi> as <hi>Arundel</hi> is upon the Name of <hi>Howard.</hi>
                  </p>
                  <p>As the Council kept back the Record, which loſt the Tryal in <hi>Octo<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>ber,</hi> 1681. ſo the Councils not putting forward the Record, cauſed the <hi>Non-ſuit.</hi>
                  </p>
                  <p>The 90 Coſts, ſo unduely got out of the Court by the Defendants, ought to be <gap reason="illegible" resp="#UOM" extent="3 letters">
