         <editorialDecl>
            <p>EEBO-TCP is a partnership between the Universities of Michigan and Oxford and the publisher ProQuest to create accurately transcribed and encoded texts based on the image sets published by ProQuest via their Early English Books Online (EEBO) database (http://eebo.chadwyck.com). The general aim of EEBO-TCP is to encode one copy (usually the first edition) of every monographic English-language title published between 1473 and 1700 available in EEBO.</p>
            <p>EEBO-TCP aimed to produce large quantities of textual data within the usual project restraints of time and funding, and therefore chose to create diplomatic transcriptions (as opposed to critical editions) with light-touch, mainly structural encoding based on the Text Encoding Initiative (http://www.tei-c.org).</p>
            <p>The EEBO-TCP project was divided into two phases. The 25,363 texts created during Phase 1 of the project have been released into the public domain as of 1 January 2015. Anyone can now take and use these texts for their own purposes, but we respectfully request that due credit and attribution is given to their original source.</p>
            <p>Users should be aware of the process of creating the TCP texts, and therefore of any assumptions that can be made about the data.</p>
            <p>Text selection was based on the New Cambridge Bibliography of English Literature (NCBEL). If an author (or for an anonymous work, the title) appears in NCBEL, then their works are eligible for inclusion. Selection was intended to range over a wide variety of subject areas, to reflect the true nature of the print record of the period. In general, first editions of a works in English were prioritized, although there are a number of works in other languages, notably Latin and Welsh, included and sometimes a second or later edition of a work was chosen if there was a compelling reason to do so.</p>
            <p>Image sets were sent to external keying companies for transcription and basic encoding. Quality assurance was then carried out by editorial teams in Oxford and Michigan. 5% (or 5 pages, whichever is the greater) of each text was proofread for accuracy and those which did not meet QA standards were returned to the keyers to be redone. After proofreading, the encoding was enhanced and/or corrected and characters marked as illegible were corrected where possible up to a limit of 100 instances per text. Any remaining illegibles were encoded as &lt;gap&gt;s. Understanding these processes should make clear that, while the overall quality of TCP data is very good, some errors will remain and some readable characters will be marked as illegible. Users should bear in mind that in all likelihood such instances will never have been looked at by a TCP editor.</p>
            <p>The texts were encoded and linked to page images in accordance with level 4 of the TEI in Libraries guidelines.</p>
            <p>Copies of the texts have been issued variously as SGML (TCP schema; ASCII text with mnemonic sdata character entities); displayable XML (TCP schema; characters represented either as UTF-8 Unicode or text strings within braces); or lossless XML (TEI P5, characters represented either as UTF-8 Unicode or TEI g elements).</p>
            <p>Keying and markup guidelines are available at the <ref target="http://www.textcreationpartnership.org/docs/.">Text Creation Partnership web site</ref>.</p>

               <salute>Friendly Reader,</salute>
            </opener>
            <p>'TIs not the deſign of theſe Introductory Lines, to endeavour the Pre-poſſeſſing of thy Mind with more favourable Sentiments concerning <g ref="char:V">Ʋ</g>s, and our Cauſe, than what Truth and Ju<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>ſtice may and do require: But to lay before thee plain Matter of Fact, by way of Preface, to our following Defence; to the End thou may'ſt ſee what ſteps our Adverſaries have taken to draw us into this Con<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>troverſie, what Provocations they have given us thus to appear, and the neceſſity of making this our Reply and Vindication Publick.</p>
            <p>For tho' we are Repreſented by the <hi>Prieſts,</hi> as the Stirrers up of Strife and Contention, and the Beginners of this Controverſie; yet, by the following Account, we hope the contrary will appear, and that they themſelves were the Authors thereof, aſſiſted by <hi>F. Bugg;</hi> they having Challenged us in General Terms, and Charged us with <hi>Blaſ<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>phemy</hi> againſt <hi>God,</hi> againſt <hi>Chriſt,</hi> and againſt the <hi>Holy Scrip<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>tures,</hi> &amp;c. which we are not guilty of; and appoined us Time and Place, <hi>viz.</hi> on the 8th of <hi>December,</hi> 1698. in <hi>Weſt-Dereham Church</hi> (ſo called) Then and There to hear the ſaid Charge proved againſt us; and ſeveral Letters paſſed between Them and <g ref="char:V">Ʋ</g>s relating thereunto; wherein we Demanded a <hi>Copy of their Charge;</hi> namely, <hi>the Authors Names, Titles of the Books, and Pages,</hi> which we thought Juſt and Reaſonable for them to give us, becauſe they pre<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>tended to Charge us out of our <hi>Friends Books,</hi> that if the Authors were Living they might Explain for themſelves; or if Dead, we might have time to make due Preparation for our ſelves.</p>
            <p>And their <g ref="char:V">Ʋ</g>nfairneſs was ſuch, that we could not prevail with them, but that they were reſolved to proceed, whether we would meet them or no, upon their own Terms; that is, without giving us the Particulars of their Charge: We judged it needful to make our Ap<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>pearance at the Time and Place by them appointed, not to Comply with their Challenge, upon the <hi>Meaſures</hi> which they had fixed; but to
<pb facs="tcp:183702:3"/> inſiſt upon our former Demand, in the face of all the People then and there Aſſembled; and in Caſe of Refuſal, to except againſt their Proceedings, as Unjuſt and Unreaſonable; which we accordingly did. For notwithſtanding our Endeavours both by Sober Reaſoning, and Earneſt Intreaties, they ſtill <hi>poſitively denied us.</hi>
            </p>
            <p>This we thought was very hard Dealing, from thoſe who would be ac<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>counted <hi>Miniſters of Chriſt;</hi> but our Wills being Reſigned to the Will of God, whoſe we are, and whom we ſerve; we concluded to be at Quiet, and Pa<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>tiently to bear our Burden; not in the leaſt intending to Print a <hi>Narrative</hi> of what paſſed between Them and Us: And the more eſpecially, becauſe, at the End of the Meeting, ſome of the <hi>Prieſts</hi> were heard to ſay, <hi>Now we have done with the Quakers.</hi> And one of the <hi>Quakers</hi> deſired to know when they would meet again; the <hi>Prieſts</hi> anſwered, <hi>Let it end here.</hi>
            </p>
            <p>But theſe appeared to be Words of Courſe, and not of Reality, as the Sequel ſoon demonſtrated: For quickly after came forth, in the <hi>Printed News,</hi> a very Partial and Erroneous Account of the <hi>Weſt-Dereham</hi> Conference, which we were willing to Hope, was not done by the Direction or Conſent of any of the <hi>Prieſts</hi> that were concerned therein: But our Hopes were ſoon fruſtrated; for in another <hi>News Paper,</hi> ſoon after that, it was affirmed to be done by their Approbation; and then came forth their <hi>Printed Relation,</hi> falſly called, <hi>The Quakers Challenge,</hi> with ſeveral of their own Names to it, and ſome other Perſons. In which, as we conceive, are many Falſhoods, undue Re<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>flections and Inſinuations contained.</p>
            <p>And for Proof hereof, we intreat the Peruſal of this enſuing Reply,</p>
            <p>For the Manifeſting of Truth, and Clearing Us, and for the Undeceiving thoſe that have been, or may be, miſled by that untrue Relation, which is Atteſted by ſome Perſons of Note, whom we believe were the more eaſily per<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>ſwaded to Subſcribe it, becauſe they had not a Right Underſtanding, who were the <hi>Aggreſſors</hi> and <hi>Fomenters</hi> of the <hi>Controverſie,</hi> and the <hi>Prieſts</hi> fur<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>ther <hi>Deſign</hi> againſt us, who are their Peaceable Neighbours, and</p>

            </p>
            <p>
               <hi>Animad.</hi> 'Tis true, We met them on the <hi>8th.</hi> of the <hi>10th.</hi> Month, 1698. in <hi>Weſt-Dereham Steeple-Houſe;</hi> but We neither appointed the <hi>Day,</hi> nor the <hi>Place,</hi> nor agreed to their <hi>Terms;</hi> for we looked upon their <hi>Terms</hi> as Unrea<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>ſonable. And therefore our Appearing there, was, not to joyn Iſſue with them, and to Anſwer their pretended Charge; but to demand at this <hi>Meeting,</hi> what we had ſo often in our Letters Inſiſted upon before, and they had Refuſed us, namely, <hi>a Copy of their Charge;</hi> and to ac<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>quaint the People, whom the <hi>Prieſts</hi> had Miſinformed, that we were not the <hi>firſt Challengers.</hi>
            </p>
            <p>Our coming in while they were at their Service, was by the Direction of their <hi>Warden</hi> and a <hi>Watch-man,</hi> ſent, as we Suppoſe, for that Purpoſe. And when we were come in, tho' we did not joyn with them; yet we offered no Af<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>front, nor carried our ſelves Irreverently, unleſs a <hi>Silent and Serious Deportment</hi> all the Time of their Service, may bring us under that Imputation.</p>
            <pb n="4" facs="tcp:183702:5"/>
            <p>
               <hi>Rel. p.</hi> 1. <q>As ſoon as <hi>our Service</hi> was ended, one of <hi>their Speakers</hi> began to Pray; whereupon all of them immediatly pulled off their Hats, and carried themſelves as at a Religious Worſhip.</q>
            </p>
            <p>
               <hi>Animad.</hi> We hope that was no Offence, and if they could ſay in Truth, they were for that Time, <hi>Sober and Quiet,</hi> as we were during <hi>their Service,</hi> as they rightly call it; we think it would have been more to their Repu<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>tation, than to Cry out, <hi>A Conventicle, a Conventicle</hi> (a Thing ſtrange to hear of in a <hi>Steeple-Houſe)</hi> while our <hi>Friend</hi> was on his knees Praying to Almighty God; as if there was a Law againſt Praying to Him, which we know nothing of, and beſides it's Allowed by their <hi>Liturgy.</hi>
            </p>
            <p>
               <hi>Rel. p.</hi> 1. <q>We inſiſted that they were <hi>our Challengers,</hi> and repeated to them their own <hi>Letter of Challenge;</hi> They told us, they were provoked by certain Carriages of ours to write that Letter.</q>
            </p>
            <p>
               <hi>Animad.</hi> True it is, we did, and do deny, that we were the <hi>Aggreſſors and firſt Challengers,</hi> and we Proffered ſe<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>veral <hi>Teſtimonies</hi> to Clear up that Matter; but being then Obſtructed by our <hi>Adverſaries,</hi> We have now Printed them, and leave the Judgment and Deciſion thereof to the Impartial.</p>
            <p>
               <hi>Rel. p.</hi> 1, 2. <q>And after many long Harangues of ſeve<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>ral of <hi>their Speakers,</hi> they deſired that all <hi>the Letters</hi> which paſſed between us might be read to the Auditory; not as if they could get any Advantage by reading them, but as appeared to us afterwards, meerly to divert us an Hour or more from proſecuting <hi>our Charge.</hi>
               </q>
            </p>
            <p>
               <hi>Animad.</hi> It was very reaſonable <hi>the Letters</hi> ſhould be read, that the People might underſtand; <hi>Firſt,</hi> that they were the <hi>firſt Challengers and Chargers;</hi> which they now grant by Complaining, they were Diverted from proſe<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>cuting <hi>their Charge. Secondly,</hi> That we had ſeveral Times
<pb n="5" facs="tcp:183702:5"/> Requeſted the <hi>Authors Names, the Titles and Pages of the Books;</hi> out of which they did intend to Charge us, that we might have been duly Prepared to Meet them, and Give proper Anſwers to <hi>their ſeveral Charges:</hi> For there is a common Juſtice due to every Man, that he ſhould have the Liberty to Explain his own Words; and if the Author was Dead, or could not be there, that his Meaning by other Words or Sentences relating to the ſame Subject might be Explained; and if they could not, then it was Time enough to Diſown thoſe Words and Sentences, but not without due Examination; for otherwiſe we ſhould be Unjuſt to our Friends, and Injurious to our Selves.</p>
            <p>
               <hi>Rel. p.</hi> 2. <q>We anſwered, we had Law and Equity a<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>gainſt ſuch an Unreaſonable Demand: We told them the Law was their own, 'twas from <hi>Edward Burroughs,</hi> who was a Son of Thunder, and ſpoke all from the Mouth of the Lord, whoſe Book uſed to be with them, of as much Authority, as the <hi>Bible.</hi>
               </q>
            </p>
            <p>
               <hi>Animad.</hi> Our Demand was, a more Particular Account than a General Charge. But was this Unreaſonable? Or is there either Law or Equity that forbids it? We know of none that doth; but do Conceive, we have both on our Side. Their Allegation out of <hi>Edward Burroughs</hi> doth not reach the <hi>Caſe,</hi> nor could his Authority Settle the Prelimi<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>naries of the <hi>Conference:</hi> For he hath been dead about 35 Years, and this was Publiſhed about 5 Years before that; therefore what is a Challenge of near 40 Years Standing, and by a <hi>Friend,</hi> ſo long ſince dead, to us? Is it Reaſonable that that ſhould Affect us, and Set us ſuch Meaſures, as theſe <hi>Partial Judges</hi> Pitch'd and Reſolv'd upon? Beſides <hi>E. B.</hi> tho' he made an ample Offer to <hi>the Prieſts</hi> of that Day, ſaying, <hi>Let them appoint Time, Place, and proffer Terms at their own Pleaſure:</hi> Yet he did not thereby Oblige us by any Expreſs Word or Conſequence.</p>
            <pb n="6" facs="tcp:183702:6"/>
            <p> That he was <hi>Boanerges,</hi> or, a Son of Thunder, and did Speak from the Mouth of the Lord, we humbly Acknowledge; and Bleſs God for Raiſing up and Sending forth ſo Eminent and Able an Inſtrument, to Preach the <hi>E<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>verlaſting Goſpel.</hi> His Memory is Precious among Us, and his Books of Eſteem; but not of Equal Authority with <hi>the Bible.</hi> For though, he had received a Meaſure of the ſame Spirit, which was in the <hi>Holy Pen-men;</hi> yet <hi>Diſpen<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>ſations</hi> Vary according to the manifold Wiſdom of God; and therefore we prefer the <hi>Bible</hi> before <hi>E. B</hi>'s Books, and all other Writings Extant whatſoever.</p>
            <p>We do not Plead for any <hi>New Goſpel, Faith, or Doctrine,</hi> different from that which Chriſt, and his Holy Prophets and Apoſtles taught, and is Recorded in the <hi>Scriptures of Truth;</hi> but for the Revelation of that, which they Taught, and is therein Recorded. Wherefore as the Apoſtle ſays; <hi>There are diverſities of Gifts, but the ſame Spirit; and there are dif<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>ferences of Adminiſtrations, but the ſame Lord; and there are diverſities of Operations, but it is the ſame God which worketh all in all: But the Manifeſtation of the Spirit is given to every Man to profit withal,</hi> 1 Cor. 12. 4, 5, 6, 7. So ſay we, <hi>viz.</hi> That there is a Meaſure of the ſame Spirit in us, which was in the Holy Prophets and Apoſtles; ſo that 'tis not an <hi>Equality</hi> of any Writings with theirs, but a <hi>Meaſure</hi> of the ſame Spirit of Revelation which they had, that we Contend for.</p>
            <p>
               <hi>Rel. p.</hi> 3. <q>For the nature of the <hi>Blaſphemy</hi> we Charge them with, ſhould be ſo Plain and Obvious, that every Chriſtian ſhall be able to Underſtand it, to be ſo upon the Reading it to them.</q>
            </p>
            <p>
               <hi>Animad.</hi> If the Nature of the <hi>Blaſphemy</hi> be ſo Plain and Obvious, as theſe Men pretend; why did they Refuſe at the <hi>Conference,</hi> to give us a Particular Account of it? For their Charging us with <hi>Blaſphemy</hi> of ſo Plain a Nature, and
<pb n="7" facs="tcp:183702:6"/> yet Denying us <hi>a Copy,</hi> after <hi>ſo many Demands,</hi> gives us juſt Cauſe to Suſpect they are Conſcious of the Invalidity of their <hi>Proofs,</hi> and therefore of the <hi>Charge</hi> it ſelf; but that <hi>Envy</hi> link'd with <hi>Intereſt,</hi> Prompts them to <hi>Calum<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>niate Loudly;</hi> that Some might be Frighted from Com<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>ing near us, and Others Irritated to <hi>Hate, Malign and Perſecute us.</hi>
            </p>
            <p>
               <hi>Rel. p.</hi> 3. <q>But ſhould we tell them the Names of <hi>our Books, Page and Line</hi> before-hand, we had deſerv'd ra<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>ther to be <hi>laghed at as Fools,</hi> than <hi>looked on as Diſputants;</hi> for this would be to ſend them our Arguments before the Diſputation.</q>
            </p>
            <p>
               <hi>Animad.</hi> Here they make a Poor Excuſe for Denying our Juſt Demands, and then give as Weak a Reaſon for it. But has the Hiding the Names of their <hi>Books, Page and Line</hi> from us, Secured their Reputation among <hi>Men of Wiſ<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>dom?</hi> Or only got them the <hi>blind Applauſes of the Ig<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>norant?</hi> We know that Juſtice and True Wiſdom are In<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>ſeparable; and therefore, ſeeing they have Poſitively Re<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>fuſed us <hi>Juſtice,</hi> their Ambition of being accounted <hi>Diſ<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>putants,</hi> when they themſelves know, <hi>'twas no Diſputa<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>tion;</hi> as it cannot Cover them from the Imputation of <hi>Folly,</hi> ſo can it not Acquit them of the Guilt of <hi>In<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>juſtice.</hi>
            </p>
            <p>Did ever Men Apologize to leſs Advantage than theſe have done? We never deſired their <hi>Arguments,</hi> but their <hi>Quotations,</hi> that we might know where to find the <hi>Blaſ<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>phemies</hi> (if any Such there were in <hi>our Friends Books)</hi> and make Preparation for <hi>our Anſwer:</hi> And ye there they talk of <hi>their Arguments,</hi> as though we Solicited for them before hand: For we told them, they might Reſerve <hi>their Arguments</hi> till they Needed them, and yet might Rea<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>ſonably Give us the <hi>Quotations,</hi> they Pretended to Argue upon.</p>
            <pb n="8" facs="tcp:183702:7"/>
            <p> That they had a great Mind to be looked on as <hi>Diſ<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>putants,</hi> and were willing to ſeem furniſhed with Argu<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>ments, to prove <hi>their Charge,</hi> we do not Deny; if <hi>Cla<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>mourous Harangues,</hi> and <hi>Tricking Attempts,</hi> be any Evi<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>dence of it: For they would Fain have Drawn us into this Snare, <hi>namely,</hi> To have Condemned our Friends of Blaſ<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>phemy, before we had Examined what <hi>that</hi> was, which they <hi>Called</hi> ſo. <p>Prieſt <hi>Archer</hi> of <hi>Milden-Hall</hi> confeſſed indeed, that the <hi>Quakers of this Generation were Orthodox;</hi> and the Confeſ<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>ſion of an <hi>Adverſary</hi> is very conſiderable: But he would have had us Condemn our Friends <hi>Books,</hi> before we ei<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>ther Heard, or Saw, or Knew, that there was any <hi>Blaſphe<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>my</hi> in them. <p>
               <hi>Rel.</hi> p. 4. <q>We told them, the Evidence we ſhould bring was not from <hi>Ours,</hi> but from their <hi>Own Books;</hi> and it was not fit we ſhould tell them the Names of our Wit<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>neſſes before hand, that they might have time to tamper with them, and make them ſpeak what they never in<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>tended.</q>

            <p>Again, how Looſely and Idly do they Diſcourſe in the latter Part of this Paragraph, about <hi>our Tampering with their Witneſſes?</hi> Was it poſſible for us <hi>to Tamper,</hi> as they

               <hi>Animad.</hi> We do not remember that any of them did: but if they did, Why did not they Inſert it here, that we might have ſeen it? </p>
            <p>Now, being thus impoſed upon, and denied juſt <hi>Mea<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>ſures,</hi> we told the Auditory; that ſeeing theſe Perſons had refuſed us Juſtice; we <hi>Appealed to the Lord of Heaven and Earth, the Judge of All,</hi> and in <hi>His Name and Fear,</hi> we made our Confeſſion of Faith in Oppoſition to their Charges; and then ſome of them <hi>Laughed, Hiſſed</hi> and <hi>Hollowed,</hi> and one of them called for the <hi>Stocks,</hi> and a <hi>Watch-man</hi> came near the Scaffold, which we were upon, and held up his <hi>Bill</hi> at us: And they appearing with ſuch ſeeming Threatning and Violence, and we could not be heard; ſome of our Friends took Occaſion to diſperſe certain <hi>Books,</hi> called, <hi>The Chriſtianity of the People called</hi> Qua<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>kers <hi>Aſſerted,</hi> &amp;c. among the People, that they might ſpeak for us. <hi>Rel.</hi> p. 6, 7. <q>It being near the Evening, one of their Speakers made mention of our Lord Biſhop's Name, and that he had waited on him at <hi>Norwich,</hi> and diſcourſed with him about this Matter in the preſence of the Arch-Deacon (Dr. <hi>Jeffery</hi>'s) And inſinuated to the People, as if my Lord had now a more favourable Opinion of their Challenge than before, ſince he had given him a more Juſt Relation (as he ſaid) of the Circumſtances, but none of us could believe his Relation.</q>

               <hi>Rel.</hi> p. 8. <q>We hope we have ſtopt the Gangrene that it ſpreads no further in our Corner, the People being generally ſatisfied, and do believe them now to be Blaſ<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>phemers, becauſe they refuſed to come to a Trial.</q>
            </p>
            <p>
               <hi>Animad.</hi> If they have ſtopt the <hi>Gangrene,</hi> as they falſly call it, what need they then ſeek the Remedy of the <hi>Par<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>liament,</hi> by <hi>Petitioning</hi> them? Doth not this ſhew what Spirit they are of? But our Defence againſt them, is, <hi>The Shield of Faith,</hi> which is able to quench all the Fiery Darts of the Devil: <hi>By it the Elders obtained a good Report, ſubdued Kingdoms, wrought Righteouſneſs, obtained Promiſes, ſtopped the Mouths of Lions, quenched the Violence of Fire, eſcaped the Edge of the Sword, out of Weakneſs were made Strong, waxed Valiant in Fight, turned to flight the Armies of the Aliens,</hi> Heb. 11. 2, 33, 34.</p>
            <p>Are theſe <hi>Miniſters</hi> of <hi>Chriſt?</hi> Are theſe <hi>Ambaſſadors</hi> of the <hi>Prince of Peace,</hi> who endeavour the Subverſion of their Neighbours Peace, both Civil and Religious?</p>
            <p>But what a weak, as well as falſe, Affirmation is it to ſay, <hi>The People are generally ſatisfied, and do believe us now to be Blaſphemers, becauſe</hi> (as they ſpeak) <hi>we refuſed to come to a Trial?</hi> For we were willing to come to a Trial, as appears by <hi>our Letters,</hi> and their <hi>own Relation</hi> of the <hi>Conference,</hi> upon ſuch reaſonable Terms, as the <hi>Juſtice of England</hi> allows by the Common Law, even to Malefactors, viz. <hi>A Copy of their Charge;</hi> but this they Peremptorily Denied us. Now is it probable, that the People ſhould be ſo <hi>Generally Satisfied,</hi> and Believe that we were <hi>Blaſphe<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>mers,</hi> when the Cauſe aſſigned for this Pretended Satiſ<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>faction and Belief is Evidently and Notoriouſly Falſe? This Triumphing of <hi>theſe Prieſts,</hi> before they have got the Victory, both loudly Proclaims their own Weakneſs, and manifeſtly Impoſeth upon the Credulity of the Peo<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>ple.</p>
            <pb n="20" facs="tcp:183702:13"/>
            <p>
               <hi>Note,</hi> Moreover that theſe <hi>Prieſts,</hi> who <hi>firſt Challenged</hi> and <hi>Charged</hi> Us (the former of which they now deny) did at the <hi>Conference</hi> uſe Various Ways to divert us, from Proving them what they really were and are, <hi>viz.</hi> The <hi>firſt Challengers;</hi> and did Inſultingly Demand our Names, and whence we were, as if they had been the <hi>King's Juſtices</hi> of the Peace; and would Impoſe upon, and Queſtion us, as if they had a Juriſdiction over us; and would, as if we were Children, have Catechiſed us; which gave our <hi>Friend</hi> Occaſion to tell them, <hi>If they would prove themſelves Mini<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>ſters of Chriſt, he would be Catechiſed by them;</hi> but not one of the <hi>Challengers</hi> would undertake that, as before is hinted. Yet one Queried of us, <hi>Whether we own'd the Reſurrection?</hi> to which Anſwer was given, <hi>We did own it, according to the Holy Scriptures.</hi>
            </p>
            <p>And then We were ask'd, <hi>Whether Chriſt was Born of a Virgin, and whether that Chriſt that was born of the Virgin</hi> Mary, <hi>was now Glorified?</hi>
            </p>
            <p>To which we Replied, <hi>That he was, and is Glorified, ac<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>cording to his own Prayer,</hi> John 17.</p>
            <p>Then the <hi>Prieſts</hi> Accuſed <hi>G. W.</hi> and Charged him, with Preferring our own Writings to the Holy Scrip<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>tures.</p>
            <p>But we denied that <hi>G. W.</hi> hath ſo done, or that we Pre<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>fer our Writings to the Holy Scriptures.</p>

            </argument>
            <p>IT is Prudence in Wiſe Men, to Hear and Weigh a <hi>De<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>fence,</hi> as well as a <hi>Charge. Francis Bugg</hi> has <hi>Charged</hi> the People called <hi>Quakers</hi> in <hi>Print,</hi> and has been Anſwer<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>ed, to thoſe ſeveral <hi>Charges,</hi> ſeveral Times. Some of the Anſwers wrote in the <hi>Defence</hi> of the ſaid People, are En<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>tituled, <hi>A Charitable Eſſay, A Juſt Enquiry, Innocency Tri<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>umphant,</hi> and <hi>The Counterfeit Convert a Scandal to Chriſti<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>anity:</hi> Which are thoſe, which at preſent occur to our Memory. And when you have read over theſe <hi>Anſwers,</hi> if you will give it under your Hands, that thoſe <hi>Anſwers</hi> are <hi>Defective:</hi> Or, if you think you have <hi>Matter</hi> to <hi>Charge us</hi> withal, let <hi>us</hi> have <hi>your</hi> Charge under <hi>your</hi> own Hands, and appoint <hi>Time</hi> and <hi>Place</hi> Convenient, and <hi>we</hi> or ſome, others of <hi>us</hi> (God willing) will meet <hi>you,</hi> as Publickly as <hi>you</hi> Pleaſe. But <hi>we</hi> reject <hi>Francis Bugg</hi>'s Charge, as being already Sufficiently Anſwered, ſeveral Times over, as alſo him to be one of the Perſons concerned againſt us in <hi>Diſputation,</hi> becauſe of his Unreaſonableneſs.</p>
            <p>
               <hi>We</hi> cannot ſuppoſe <hi>you</hi> ſo void of Common Senſe, as to look upon it ſuitable to a Right Management of <hi>Controver<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>ſie,</hi> to Anſwer an Oppoſer ſeveral times over in One and the Same Thing or Things.</p>
            <pb n="26" facs="tcp:183702:16"/>
            <p> And be it known to you all, this is not through any <hi>Conſciouſneſs</hi> to our ſelves, of holding any <hi>Errors;</hi> but if <hi>you</hi> think it is, <hi>you</hi> may if you Pleaſe, try the utmoſt of <hi>your Skill</hi> and <hi>Strength,</hi> and ſee what <hi>you</hi> can Get by it. But pray leave off Boaſting, until you have obtained <hi>Victory.</hi>

            <p>Therefore to Conclude at Preſent, as <hi>we</hi> ſaid before, <hi>we</hi> are Free, or ſome Others of <hi>us,</hi> to Meet with <hi>you,</hi> or any of <hi>you</hi> all, <hi>Francis Bugg</hi> only Excepted, for the <hi>Rea<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>ſons</hi> aforeſaid, to take <hi>your Charge,</hi> and ſtand a Publick Tryal, deſiring only the <hi>Common Priviledges to ſuch Occaſi<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>ons belonging,</hi> Provided, as aforeſaid, <hi>you</hi> think Meet, in <hi>your</hi> own Names, or any other of <hi>your</hi> Cloth, to <hi>Charge us.</hi>

            <p>YOUR Paper, with the Charge upon the People call'd <hi>Quakers,</hi> without a Date, came to the Hands of our Friend <hi>John Hubbard</hi> on the 27th Inſtant. <hi>You</hi> were plea<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>ſed to call the Offer <hi>we</hi> made to <hi>you</hi> in Writing a <hi>Challenge,</hi> which Term <hi>we</hi> think is no ways Applicable to it. For taking Notice of <hi>your</hi> readineſs to Eſpouſe <hi>Francis Bugg</hi>'s Charge and Challenge, <hi>we</hi> look'd upon it very Reaſonable, and Prudence in <hi>you,</hi> as Wiſe Men, to hear <hi>our Defence;</hi> therefore referr'd <hi>you</hi> to ſeveral of <hi>our</hi> Printed Anſwers, which if <hi>you</hi> had deſired of <hi>us</hi> to have ſeen them, <hi>we</hi> would have procured them for <hi>you;</hi> but not one word of that from <hi>you,</hi> in ſo many Weeks time. And for <hi>our</hi> excluding <hi>F. And whereas <hi>you</hi> render it difficult, to procure <hi>our</hi> Friends Books, <hi>we</hi> are willing to Expoſe them to any that deſires them, as is well known, and as <hi>you</hi> might have prov'd, if <hi>you</hi> had made Trial.</p>
            <p>And now, before <hi>we</hi> take Notice of <hi>your</hi> Propoſitions, <hi>we</hi> judge it neceſſary to enquire into the Extent of <hi>your</hi> Charge, whether it be upon the whole Body of the People called <hi>Quakers,</hi> or upon particular Perſons, or upon the Writings of particular Perſons, Eſpecially <hi>your</hi> Three firſt Charges. If <hi>you</hi> Charge a whole Body of People, <hi>you</hi> are not Juſt in <hi>your</hi> Limitation, that the Perſons that have a ſhare in the Diſpute, be only known Inhabitants in <hi>Norfolk, Suffolk,</hi> and City of <hi>Norwich,</hi> and at the ſame time Charge all the ſaid People Generally. <salute>Friends,</salute>
            </opener>
            <p>WE Obſerve in <hi>your</hi> laſt, Dated <hi>October</hi> the 31ſt 1698. how apt you are to Catch at every little Eſcape, tho' nothing relating to the Cauſe, the omiſſion of a Date. <hi>We</hi> hope, tho' <hi>we</hi> forgot the 27th of <hi>October, we</hi> ſhall not forget the 8th of <hi>December. You</hi> are offended <hi>we</hi> call <hi>your</hi> firſt Letter a <hi>Challenge</hi> to <hi>us,</hi> tho' <hi>our</hi> betters have thought it the Boldeſt and Perteſt that ever was ſent to the whole <hi>Hoſt of Iſrael, viz.</hi> as <hi>you</hi> more than once in <hi>your</hi> Letter term it to <hi>us,</hi> or any of <hi>us</hi> all, and to any of <hi>our</hi> Cloth, and that from the Hands of ſuch whom <hi>we</hi> never took to be any great <hi>Goliahs.</hi> But all this Anger it ſeems is, becauſe <hi>we</hi> ſo Zealouſly (as you think) Eſpouſe <hi>Francis Bugg</hi>'s Charge. One may ſee how ready <hi>you</hi> are to take Fire, when ſo ſmall a Spark will kindle <hi>you;</hi> For one of <hi>us</hi> was not there when he delivered his Charge; Another of <hi>us</hi> came by meer accident; and None of <hi>us</hi> were any other than as Witneſſes to the Delivery of it; which any Three of <hi>your</hi> honeſt Neigbours, <hi>we</hi> ſuppoſe, might have been without Offence. As to the Books <hi>you</hi> mention'd to <hi>us</hi> to be Read, which <hi>you</hi> conceive would have cooled <hi>our</hi> Zeal for <hi>Bugg,</hi> and his ſo often (as <hi>you</hi> ſay) baffl'd Charge. <hi>You</hi> may pleaſe to know, that <hi>we</hi> have Read them, and that <hi>Bugg</hi> is not Anſwer'd, nor can be Anſwer'd any other way (ſeeing the Charge is drawn from Quotations out of <hi>your own Books)</hi> but by denying the Truth of Them, which <hi>your</hi> pretended Anſwerers do not do; but betake themſelves to their uſual Palliating and Painting Tricks, to cover over and hide their Defor<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>mities.</p>
            <pb n="32" facs="tcp:183702:19"/>
            <p>
               <hi>We</hi> confeſs, <hi>we</hi> had a better Opinion of <hi>your</hi> Principles before <hi>we</hi> ſaw <hi>your Books,</hi> than now <hi>we</hi> have; for indeed <hi>we</hi> have received more Satisfaction from <hi>your</hi> Anſwers, than from the Books they pretend to Anſwer; being confirm'd more in <hi>our</hi> Belief, that they are Unanſwerable. And if <hi>you</hi> write in this manner, <hi>we</hi> ſhall never deſire to take the Pen out of <hi>your</hi> Hands, for it will do <hi>us</hi> no Hurt; but for your Gall that is in the Ink. Yet becauſe <hi>you</hi> ſay, he muſt be Rejected, and <hi>you</hi> will have it ſo; <hi>we</hi> have given <hi>you your</hi> Humour, and have accepted of <hi>your</hi> Challenge with<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>out him.</p>
            <p>Friends, <hi>Your</hi> People have been ever ready to ſay, <hi>Our</hi> Charges have been Lies &amp; Forgeries, and every where have run with this Cry in their Mouths; Lies, all Lies, becauſe alas! they never Read <hi>our Books,</hi> or at leaſt never Com<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>par'd them with <hi>your</hi> Authors: Therefore <hi>we</hi> perceive that Writing Books will not do; but <hi>we</hi> muſt bring forth thoſe that <hi>you</hi> have Written, at a Publick Meeting, and lay them open before <hi>your</hi> Deluded Followers, and deſire them to ſee with their own Eyes, and perhaps they may ſee ſuch a Frightful Sight, as they little expected there.</p>
            <p>
               <hi>You</hi> might eaſily have diſcerned, that <hi>our</hi> Charge affects the whole Body of <hi>your</hi> People; it relating to Blaſphemies ſo long and ſo often Printed, and yet never Contradicted or Cenſured, but Aſſerted to be from Perſons Infallible. <hi>Blaſphemies</hi> ſo often approved of by <hi>your</hi> Second Days Meet<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>ings, where all <hi>your Books</hi> are Examined, and by an <hi>Index Expurgatorius</hi> Corrected, tho' written from the Mouth of the Lord. So that <hi>your Church</hi> hath owned them, and <hi>we</hi> may juſtly Charge the <hi>Blaſphemy</hi> of thoſe Books upon <hi>it,</hi> till they Diſown them.</p>
            <p>But <hi>you</hi> ſeem to be much Concerned for the Reſtraint <hi>we</hi> lay upon <hi>you,</hi> ſo that <hi>you</hi> may not go out of this Dioceſs for <hi>your</hi> aſſiſtance. But truly Sirs, <hi>you</hi> ſee, <hi>we</hi> have put the
<pb n="33" facs="tcp:183702:19"/> ſame Reſtraint upon <hi>our</hi> ſelves, <hi>we</hi> will not go out of the Dioceſs, perhaps, but a little way from Home for <hi>ours; we</hi> cannot think <hi>you</hi> can be at a want for help in ſuch a Dioceſs, where there are ſeveral Thouſands of <hi>you.</hi>
            </p>
            <p>Beſides, if <hi>you</hi> will have a little Patience, the Perſons <hi>you</hi> had probably deſigned for this Service may have work enough at Home ere long: For <hi>we</hi> are Inclinable to believe, that the like Charge to this, will go through many Dioceſſes in this Kingdom: So that they may ſave <hi>their</hi> Powder and Shot till the Charge comes to <hi>their</hi> Door.</p>
            <p>
               <hi>Friends,</hi> tho' <hi>we</hi> intend to Charge <hi>you</hi> with Blaſphemy out of <hi>your own Books;</hi> yet <hi>we</hi> cannot think it fit to give <hi>you</hi> the Authors Names, Line, and Page; for that were to ſend you <hi>our</hi> Arguments before the Day we ſhall uſe them, that you may have time the more cunningly to Elude the Force of them. It is enough to let you ſee, we intend to Charge you with Blaſphemy, as expreſſed in our laſt; tho' we ſhould not be ſo Fooliſhly Generous, as to tell you the very Place where we intend to Aſſault you. Beſides we our ſelves have not yet read over ſome of your Books, out of which, as we are Reading them, there ariſes every Day new Matter for a Charge; and ſo perhaps there may to the time of our Meeting: For we can ſcarce open a Book of yours, but preſently we are even Frighted with ſuch Apparition, that ſends us to our Prayers, for a Poor Deluded People, that are daily Haunted with them: And further we may add, that you have their Books as well as we, and would you read them over as we do, ye your ſelves could not but ſee thoſe <hi>Blaſphemies</hi> we Charge you with, being too big to eſcape your ſight.</p>
            <p>But you think it is fit, the Authors of thoſe Books out of which we extract <hi>your Charge,</hi> ſhould be permitted to ſpeak for themſelves. You cannot but know, that moſt of thoſe Authors are Dead; and as for them that are Alive, we
<pb n="34" facs="tcp:183702:20"/> have already heard them in your <hi>Prints</hi> to little purpoſe: However, they have no Reaſon to Challenge it as a pecu<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>liar Due to them, to be the only Vindicators of their Cauſe, ſeeing every particular Member of your <hi>Church</hi> is concern'd in it, as well as they: So that it is a Charge upon every one of you all, as well as upon the Authors of thoſe Books, you having Eſpouſed them, till they be Diſown'd, and Condemn'd by you.</p>
            <p>To conclude, We cannot ſee how it can conſiſt with either Juſtice or Prudence to alter our Method, for the Reaſons given: We therefore think it but a vain thing for you to trouble your ſelves or us, with any more ſuch Letters. Poor People! that are going Blindfold to <hi>Sama<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>riah</hi> inſtead of <hi>Dothan.</hi> The Lord open your Eyes, to ſee where you are, and whither you are a going, is the Prayer of your beſt of Friends, tho' you may poſſibly think us your greateſt Enemies.</p>

<pb n="35" facs="tcp:183702:20"/> proceed; As in <hi>our</hi> laſt <hi>we</hi> Judge the Term <hi>Challenge</hi> not proper to the Offer <hi>we</hi> made, whatever the Judgment of <hi>your</hi> Selves, or Betters, may be concerning it; As for its Boldneſs and Pertneſs (as <hi>you</hi> are pleaſed to Term it) <hi>we</hi> take it to be another Eſcape of <hi>your</hi> Memories, to ſuppoſe it herein to exceed any of thoſe (as <hi>you</hi> ſay) which were ſent to the whole <hi>Hoſt of Iſrael.</hi> But ſuch as it is <hi>we</hi> doubt not to make Good, and that in Truth void of Wrath. As to <hi>Francis Bugg, you</hi> did Eſpouſe his <hi>Charge</hi> Blindfold, as appears by <hi>your</hi> after Inquiry, and Reading of <hi>our Books,</hi> and did Eſpouſe it by more Ways than that of Witneſſing to the Delivery of <hi>the Charge,</hi> which none of <hi>our</hi> Honeſt unprejudicate Neighbours would.</p>
            <p>As for <hi>Quotations</hi> made by <hi>Bugg</hi> from <hi>our Books, you</hi> ſay the petended Anſwerers deny the Truth of them, but betake themſelves to their Uſual <hi>Palliating</hi> and <hi>Painting Tricks.</hi> This Aſſertion <hi>we</hi> have no Cauſe to Credit, but for the preſent will ſay, that <hi>we</hi> know that in ſeveral Anſwers of <hi>ours</hi> to Books of this ſort, there is frequently Detected falſe Quotations, and his Apparent Forgeries, which if either <hi>you</hi> have not Read, or not Obſerved, it might have been well enough to forbear that Scurrility of <hi>Painting,</hi> and <hi>Tricks.</hi>
            </p>
            <p>Now for <hi>your Charge, you</hi> Acknowledge it to be upon the whole Body of <hi>us,</hi> and therefore (as in <hi>our</hi> former) <hi>we</hi> think <hi>you</hi> are not juſt in <hi>your</hi> Limitation, nor does <hi>your</hi> Threat (if you will have a little Patience, <hi>&amp;c.)</hi> fright us from ſtill Inſiſting on our Exceptions: for, as our laſt did declare our Acceptance of ſuch of your Propoſitions, as were Equal and Fair, and deſired the reſt might be a<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>greeable, and ſuch as we are Perſwaded no Ingenuous or Juſt Perſons would Evade or Deny us: So we ſtill inſiſt on them, not knowing any Power or Dominion you have o<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>ver us, to over rule what we have ſo fairly offered to qua<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>lifie
<pb n="36" facs="tcp:183702:21"/> your <hi>Limitations.</hi> For if you intend to confine us as Reſpondents, only who are within this <hi>Dioceſs,</hi> it is Rea<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>ſonable to confine you not to <hi>Charge</hi> Perſons or their Books more Remote or Abſent: For why ſhould a Man whom you may <hi>Charge,</hi> be obliged to Anſwer by <hi>Proxy,</hi> when perhaps he can better Defend himſelf; the Juſtice of the Common Law in this Caſe much exceeds your pretence of <hi>Edification;</hi> and this being denied by you, we take it for granted, your Deſign is to Cenſure and paſs Judgment on Perſons Unheard. And if <hi>your Charge</hi> be to be drawn from <hi>Books,</hi> it is as reaſonable by the Common Voice of Mankind, that their <hi>Titles</hi> and <hi>Pages</hi> be given, the <hi>Au<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>thors</hi> of which if Living, have an undoubted Right to Explain for Themſelves; or if Dead, ſuch Notice is rea<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>ſonable for our due Preparation to Anſwer: Till which we ſhall only ſay, that the Living Labours of the Dead, have this Juſtice due to Them, <hi>viz.</hi> that the whole be conſidered, and the Scope and Intent of the Writer be taken, and not Rigidly, much leſs Falſly to pervert his Words, to a Senſe Contrary and Repugnant to the Scope of the whole: The refuſal hereof will ſpeak a Deſign Par<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>tial, Injurious and Precipitant; but we hoping (on bet<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>ter Conſideration) you'l do otherwiſe, do expect as a<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>bove to be ſent us, in ſuch convenient Time, as we may Examine them, which cannot be in leſs time then Three Weeks at leaſt. <p>But you are ſtill offended at our Unreaſonable Limitation of you, as to the Place whence you are to fetch your Diſpu<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>tants. But <hi>Friends,</hi> did not you begin with us? Did not you limit us, when you rejected <hi>Francis Bugg?</hi> And all others too, that were not of our Cloth, ſome of whom you know too well might have been very uſeful to us in this Service. Nay, did not you reject <hi>Francis Bugg</hi> for this Reaſon, becauſe he had been Anſwered, as you pretend, over and over again, and was unreaſonable, as if we had nothing to do but <hi>Actum agere:</hi> And may not we ſay the ſame of your <hi>Hackney Diſputants,</hi> they have trudged ſo long in that Road, and have been Spur'd and Gall'd by us enough already, and therefore in reaſon we ought to turn them off a-while, and give them reſt till another occaſion; more plainly, they have been Anſwered over and over already, and are unreaſonable.</p>
            <p>Beſides, <hi>Your Church,</hi> which you profeſs your ſelves to be ſo Zealous Members of, have owned, and approved of thoſe Books we intend to quote, and your ſelves have been known to admire, and almoſt adore them and their Au<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>thors: And therefore till you diſclaim them, you are as much concern'd to Vindicate them as the Authors them<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>ſelves; for by owning them you become joynt Authors, and your Plea for them will be the Plea of Parties, and not of Proxies.</p>
            <pb n="39" facs="tcp:183702:22"/>
            <p> But now, When your Court of Equity will not Relieve you, you Fly to Common Law; but if you give us no better Proof of your Skill in it, then in this Inſtance, we ſhall have little Reaſon to take your Counſel in Law Buſineſs.</p>
            <p>
               <hi>Friends,</hi> 'Tis Matter of Fact we Charge you with, that we find ſuch and ſuch Blaſphemous Expreſſions in your Books: For Matter of Right, whether ſuch Expreſſions are to be eſteemed Blaſphemy, we ſhall leave it to the Judgment of the Auditors. The Matters of Fact your Authors have already owned them, at leaſt ſo much as will make good our Charge: And for Matter of Right, whether ſuch Expreſſions be Blaſphemous or no, we think the Common Law will not allow the Accuſed Malefactor, when he's accuſed of the Fact aright, to Judge of the Law, or whether his Fact hath been a Breach of it. Sup<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>poſe we had Charged ſome of your <hi>Friends</hi> with Common Swearing by their Maker, and they ſhould not deny Mat<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>ter of Fact, that they have ſaid ſuch words; only they excuſe them with a great deal of Artifice, that they were ſpoke in Paſſion, that they dropt from them raſhly, or their Minds did a little run out, or truly they do not affect ſuch Speeches, or they may ſee Cauſe otherwiſe to word them; is there any Law or Equity, ſuch Men ſhould be admitted in any Court in the World to Plead and Apolo<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>gize for Common Swearing? If Matter of Fact be prov'd or own'd, may not the Judge turn ſuch Men out of the Court, and paſs the Definitive upon them. The Fact is own'd by the Men themſelves, that ſuch Expreſſions are in their Books, ſo much at leaſtwiſe as will prove the Charge, and let the Auditory (whom we Appeal to as Judges in this Caſe) Determine, whether Blaſphemy or no. We dare Affirm, it will be eaſier for the People to Judge, that ſuch and ſuch Words are <hi>Blaſphemy,</hi> then that
<pb n="40" facs="tcp:183702:23"/> ſuch words are <hi>Swearing.</hi> And we are Sorry to ſee you are ſo Zealous for ſuch <hi>Authors,</hi> only to give them an an opportu<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>nity to excuſe <hi>Blaſphemy.</hi> At laſt, you direct us to the <hi>Golden</hi> Rule in Divinity, <hi>to do as we would be done by;</hi> and think you have Gravell'd us with Three Queſtions, which you ſuppoſe we cannot Anſwer; if we ſtick to our former Meaſure, without apparent Violation of it.</p>
            <p>Now Sirs, what are thoſe hard Meaſures, I pray? Why truly, after we have Charged ſome of yours with <hi>Blaſphe<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>my,</hi> in ſome <hi>Books,</hi> Printed <hi>Ten, Twenty, Thirty,</hi> ſome <hi>Forty</hi> Years ago, that were never Corrected, nor Cenſured by your <hi>Church,</hi> in your Second Days Meeting, Erected on purpoſe to Examine <hi>Books,</hi> and Licence them; but have been Approved and Commended to us, and Admired by al<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>moſt all of you: we Demand, that you would either Juſti<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>fie, or Diſown them Publickly under your Hands. <p>Such an Impertinency as this is, would be almoſt Intole<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>rable, but that we are ſo commonly uſed to them by your Party: Do but Scratch your Heads a little, and conſider ſeriouſly the Force of ſuch a Conſequence. We are bound to Juſtifie or Diſown all the Books of our Brethren, as to every little Error or Miſtake, becauſe we call upon you only to Juſtifie or Doſown the <hi>Blaſphemies</hi> of yours: We doubt not but there have been <hi>ſome tolerable Errors</hi> in ours, which are no great Blot to an Author that ac<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>knowledges himſelf to be a Man, <hi>viz.</hi> Fallible; but a Mighty Prejudice againſt the Infallible Club, whether at <hi>Rome</hi> or <hi>Grace-Church-ſtreet,</hi> that pretend they cannot Err: And we are only obliged to a Charitable Forbearance in ſuch Caſes, when you will be obliged for every Error you
<pb n="41" facs="tcp:183702:23"/> find in yours, by reaſon of ſuch a Pretence, to diſown them as Cheats.</p>
            <p>But if any of our Authors have Wrote or Printed <hi>Blaſ<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>phemy,</hi> we are ſure ſuch have not been approved or allow<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>ed of by our General Meeting, our Convocation, who have made bold to Cenſure them without asking the Authors leave; or if there be any ſuch that have eſcaped the Know<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>ledge of the Convocation, and therefore not Cenſured by them, perhaps they have been Condemned, if not Burnt by <hi>Parliaments</hi> and <hi>
                  <g ref="char:V">Ʋ</g>niverſities;</hi> or if they have eſcaped ſuch a Cenſure, bring out ſuch <hi>Books of ours</hi> when you will, and you ſhall ſee, we will either Juſtifie or Diſown them, without calling for the Authors to come and plead their Cauſe.</p>
            <p>To the Second Queſtion we Anſwer, You ſhall have equal Liberty with us, Produce our Books, and your Charge againſt them (Suppoſing it to be of <hi>Blaſphemy)</hi> when you will, after you have firſt Anſwered ours, and we will give you leave to reſerve your particular Inſtances to the very Time and Place of Meeting, if you pleaſe: For we are aſſured, that <hi>Blaſphemy</hi> is of ſo ſtrong and rank a Scent, that every <hi>Chriſtian</hi> that hath not his Noſe quite ſtop'd, that as St. <hi>Paul</hi> ſays, can but exerciſe his Senſes never ſo little about Good or Evil, as ſoon as ever it's open'd or diſ<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>cover'd, will preſently nauſeate and turn away from it. And we are ſorry that ſo many of you have got ſuch a Stuffing in your Heads, as not to perceive it; nay, you think them ſweet Odours ſure, that you will not be ſatisfied till you be allowed Advocates to Plead for them, as ſound and wholſome, and therefore to be continued in the beſt Room of the Houſe, the <hi>Church.</hi>
            </p>
            <p>The Third Queſtion is Co-incident with the Firſt, but we muſt anſwer it, or you'll ſay we dropt it for its Weight; for there is no reaſon we ſhould appear in the Perſon of
<pb n="42" facs="tcp:183702:24"/> all thoſe our Brethren, ſo as to be Charged with every little Error out of their Books, in their ſtead; but this we will do, bring forth their <hi>Books</hi> and <hi>Blaſphemies,</hi> as we have ſaid before, and we will either Juſtifie them or Diſown them, without conſulting the Authors of them. And this is all that we deſire of you, either to Juſtifie or Diſown <hi>Yours,</hi> and <hi>Their Blaſphemies,</hi> under your Hands, which we may expect from you, by the ſame Rule you lay before us, <hi>Do as you would be done by.</hi>
            </p>
            <p>And why may we not expect this of you, ſeeing you have Abandoned your Authors in leſſer matters, as in their Orders about <hi>Ribbonds, Lace, Slit-waſt-Coats, Prancing Steeds, Coſtly Habits, Fine Clothes, Stately Buildings, in forbearing to Thee and Thou, and Sir your Betters?</hi> Seeing many of you have oppoſed their Orders in <hi>Paying Tithes, Womens Meet<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>ings, Swearing in Courts of Judicature, of carrying no Guns in their Ships, or uſing the Carnal Weapon.</hi>
            </p>
            <p>Laſt of all, We take notice, with much joy, to ſee you ſo much fall off from the former Rude and Rugged Be<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>haviour of thoſe Men, whoſe Cauſe you Eſpouſe, towards the <hi>Clergy:</hi> It is not long ſince your Addreſs to them was in that Tinkerly Language, <hi>Greedy Doggs, Babylon's Merchants, Devil-driven dungy Gods, Witches, Bloodhounds, Sodomites, Gimcracks, Wheelbarrows, Tatterdemallions,</hi> which you have now Exchanged for more familiar and kind Expreſſions, to call us <hi>Friends;</hi> tho' your former Carriage hath been as Divinely Authorized as your preſent <hi>Blaſphemies:</hi> Your very Railings have been, as you have pretended, by <hi>Inſpiration.</hi> We hope, ſince you have begun to draw from that Old Filthy Spirit that dwelt in your Anceſtors, you will at laſt totally Abandon them, ſeeing you have Abandoned them in leſſer Matters, and why not in their <hi>Blaſphemies? Friends,</hi> pray trouble us no more with your Letters, for our <hi>Meaſures</hi> are fix'd, and you may Chuſe whether you

            <p> And whereas they further Certifie, That this, and no<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>thing but this, made them and their Miniſters willing to Permit Mr. <hi>Bugg</hi> to come amongſt them, to try if he could <hi>Conjure down</hi> that buſie Spirit which poſſeſſes the <hi>Quakers,</hi> and is ſo troubleſome to us.</p>
            <p>
               <hi>Reply,</hi> Firſt, We may conclude, by the Nature and Groſſneſs of theſe words, that you, poor People, know not what you have ſign'd: For you have given a Notable Reflection upon <hi>Fra. Bugg;</hi> Is he indeed turn'd <hi>Conjurer?</hi> But if it be ſo, we know that Spirit the Sincere <hi>Quakers</hi> are led by, has always been too hard for ſuch <hi>Conjurers.</hi> But pray, wherefore are you ſo harſh in Reflections on your <hi>Neighbours,</hi> as though they were led by a <hi>Diabolical Spirit?</hi> This touches not them only, but Chriſt alſo, in whom they have Believed; and that <hi>Spirit</hi> that dwelt in thoſe that Perſecuted our Lord, dwells too much in you; they call'd the Maſter of the Houſe <hi>Beelzebub,</hi> and alſo a <hi>Blaſphemer;</hi> no Marvel then if his Followers be called ſo: We remember this Caution, <hi>The Servant is not greater than his Lord;</hi> we are ſorry for your ſakes, that you ſhould Offer that Injury to your own Souls, but do de<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>ſire you to Repent, <hi>that God may ſhew you Mercy;</hi> for you, together with your Miniſter, lie under that <hi>Wo,</hi> ſpo<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>ken of in <hi>Iſaiah</hi> 5. in calling <hi>Good</hi> Evil, and <hi>Light</hi> Dark<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>neſs.</p>
            <p>Further, whereas you confeſs, That you and your Mini<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>ſter accompanied <hi>F. Bugg</hi> to one <hi>Quakers</hi> Houſe, and ſent one of his Printed Charges in a Letter to <hi>Samuel Cater.</hi>
            </p>
            <p>
               <hi>Anſw.</hi> This is a clear Confeſſion; here are Eighteen of you, and your Miniſter, have Eſpouſed <hi>F. Bugg</hi>'s Challenge, and ſent it not only to a <hi>Quaker</hi>'s Houſe, but to <hi>S. Cater</hi> of <hi>Little Port,</hi> in the <hi>Iſle of Ely,</hi> for him, and Five more of his Brethren, to come forth, and joyn with your <hi>Mi<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>niſter</hi> and <hi>F. Bugg,</hi> and <hi>Four</hi> more. So now you have done
<pb n="52" facs="tcp:183702:29"/> well to be Ingenuous, and Confeſs your Act; for now the <hi>Challenge</hi> lies at your Door: Here is a <hi>Printed Challenge</hi> you ſent, Dated <hi>Auguſt</hi> 10. 1698. And here is your <hi>Miniſter</hi>'s <hi>Letter,</hi> Dated <hi>Auguſt</hi> 28. 1698. And here is the 3<hi>d</hi> of <hi>October, fixt for the Day of the Diſpute; and if we do not Appear, we muſt be judged Inſincere and Cowardly:</hi> And all this on your Part, before the <hi>Quakers</hi> wrote their <hi>Friendly Letter,</hi> Dated <hi>September</hi> the 7th 1698.</p>
