Anyone can now take and use these texts for their own purposes, but we respectfully request that due credit and attribution is given to their original source.</p>
            <p>Users should be aware of the process of creating the TCP texts, and therefore of any assumptions that can be made about the data.</p>
            <p>Text selection was based on the New Cambridge Bibliography of English Literature (NCBEL). If an author (or for an anonymous work, the title) appears in NCBEL, then their works are eligible for inclusion. Selection was intended to range over a wide variety of subject areas, to reflect the true nature of the print record of the period. In general, first editions of a works in English were prioritized, although there are a number of works in other languages, notably Latin and Welsh, included and sometimes a second or later edition of a work was chosen if there was a compelling reason to do so.</p>
            <p>Image sets were sent to external keying companies for transcription and basic encoding. Quality assurance was then carried out by editorial teams in Oxford and Michigan. 5% (or 5 pages, whichever is the greater) of each text was proofread for accuracy and those which did not meet QA standards were returned to the keyers to be redone. After proofreading, the encoding was enhanced and/or corrected and characters marked as illegible were corrected where possible up to a limit of 100 instances per text. Any remaining illegibles were encoded as &lt;gap&gt;s. Understanding these processes should make clear that, while the overall quality of TCP data is very good, some errors will remain and some readable characters will be marked as illegible. Users should bear in mind that in all likelihood such instances will never have been looked at by a TCP editor.</p>
            <p>The texts were encoded and linked to page images in accordance with level 4 of the TEI in Libraries guidelines.</p>
            <p>Copies of the texts have been issued variously as SGML (TCP schema; ASCII text with mnemonic sdata character entities); displayable XML (TCP schema; characters represented either as UTF-8 Unicode or text strings within braces); or lossless XML (TEI P5, characters represented either as UTF-8 Unicode or TEI g elements).</p>

               <seg rend="decorInit">F</seg>Oraſmuch as you were pleaſed, ſo to own mee, and this rude, &amp; plain ſpeech of mine, as to com<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>mand me to the Pulpit, and or<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>der it to the Preſſe.</p>
            <p>I now humbly preſent it to you, with a ſmall portall (or ſhort Epi<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>ſtle) for the <hi>Edifice,</hi> it ſelf, (being ſo little, and built with ſo many unhewne ſtones,) deſerves not a great <hi>Porch,</hi> or <hi>Gate</hi> before it.
<pb facs="tcp:169787:4"/>That which I intended in this <hi>Diſcourſe,</hi> and that which I do, (and ſhall) aime at and endea<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>vour, in my whole <hi>Courſe,</hi> was, and is the <hi>Exaltation of Chriſt, and the humiliation, and aba<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>ſing of the Creature.</hi>
            </p>
            <p>Chriſt was once humbled that wee might be exalted, and he is now exalted that wee might bee humbled. I may ſay without flat<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>tery, that God hath honoured you much, and you have honoured him not a little: Yet obſerve that Ho<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>nour is a <hi>fore-runner,</hi> either of the raiſing of <hi>Chriſt</hi> in mens hearts,<note place="margin">Deut. 4.24</note> and eſteem, or a ſigne of the <hi>utter ruining, breaking</hi> and <hi>ſinking</hi> of them. The Lord is jealous for his owne, and zealous for his Sons glory;<note place="margin">Eſa. 9.7.</note> and though he bee willing to impart his grace unto all,<note place="margin">Eſa. 42.8.</note> yet his <hi>glory hee will not give to any other.</hi>

            <p>There bee two hard <hi>Leſſons,</hi> which are as the <hi>Alpha</hi> and <hi>O<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>mega,</hi> in Gods Book. The one is <hi>to deny our ſelves,</hi> and the o<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>ther, <hi>to give glory to God:</hi> And hee is the compleateſt Scholler in Chriſts Schoole, who is beſt vers'd in this divine learning.</p>
            <p>
               <hi>Yee Worthy Rulers (of our Iſrael)</hi> Conſider how God hath exalted You in the hearts of his People, over the heads of your Domeſtique Enemies, and in the eyes of your Foraigne foes. Now what doth the Lord require for all this from you againe? but that you walke humbly, and give his <hi>Highneſſe</hi> his deſerved, and due <hi>Glory.</hi>
            </p>
            <p>Though <hi>Moſes</hi> and <hi>Aaron,</hi> (two choyce Chriſtians, and Cham<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>pions) did lead and govern <hi>Iſra<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>el</hi> for a long time,<note place="margin">Num. 20.12.</note> (notwithſtan<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>ding many <hi>dangers and difficul<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>ties</hi>)
<pb facs="tcp:169787:5"/>yet they were at laſt ſhut out of <hi>Canaan,</hi> becauſe <hi>they did not ſanctifie God, at the waters of Meribah.</hi> Alſo <hi>Eli</hi> (who was forty years a Prieſt of the Lord) was taken away,<note place="margin">1 Sam. 2.29.</note> and his poſterity cut off, <hi>becauſe he honoured his ſons above the Lord.</hi> Would you ſtand your <hi>ſelves,</hi> and keep the ho<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>nour which God hath given you? and would you have your <hi>poſteri<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>ty</hi> to proſper, and to have a name in the world, when you are gone out of it? then make it your buſineſſe to exalt Chriſt. Oh remember <hi>that God puls downe ſome,</hi>
               <note place="margin">Ezek. 31.14.</note> 
               <hi>to the end that others might not ex<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>alt themſelves. The Lord of Hoſts</hi> (ſaith Iſaiah) <hi>hath purpo<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>ſed to ſtain the pride of all glo<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>ry, and to bring into contempt all the honorable of the earth.</hi>

               <hi>There is a day comming, when all fleſh ſhall be humbled, and

               <hi>and upon e<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>very one that is lifted up, &amp; he ſhal be brought low.</hi> Humble your ſelves therefore, and exalt, neither your hearts, nor your gates, <hi>Seek not great things for your ſelves,</hi>
               <note place="margin">Jer. 45.5.</note> 
               <hi>and let there not bee a lye in your right hands,</hi>
               <note place="margin">Eſa. 44.20 Mal. 2.16.</note> 
               <hi>neither cover violence with a garment.</hi> Propound nothing to your ſelves to ſeek for, but the honour of Chriſt, and the Saints, and Nations inte<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>reſt, (wherein your <hi>intereſts</hi> and <hi>ſafeties</hi> are involved, and inclu<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>ded.)<note place="margin">Neh. 5.14.18.</note> Imitate good <hi>Nehemiah,</hi> who did twelve years hard ſervice freely. And that becauſe <hi>the bon<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>dage was heavy upon the peo<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>ple.</hi> The Lord hath hitherto made you friends to the Saints, and Fa<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>thers to the Nation. So that the former hath been countenanced,

            <p>Likewiſe your zealous and glo<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>rious Acts of Juſtice againſt ſin, and your religious Acts of Grace (to the ſoules of men) in the propa<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>gating and promoting the Goſpel,<note place="margin">Eſpecially thoſe of Wales.</note> doe, and will remaine engraven, (not in Marble but) in the mindes of us and our poſterity.</p>
            <p>And for the making of your actions yet more incomparable, (if your more publique and weighty buſineſſe permit) to ſet ſome time, and perſons aſide, to hear, and re<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>lieve the private petitions, and grievances of the widdows, diſtreſ<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>ſed, impriſoned, oppreſſed, and thoſe that have ſuffered for Chriſts cauſe and your:<note place="margin">Job. 31.16 19.</note> that you may be able to ſay with <hi>Job: That you have not withheld the poore from their deſire, nor cauſed the eies of the Widdow to faile: nor

            <p>Another deſirable thing is, that all the <hi>REMAINDERS</hi> of <hi>Pa<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>ganiſme, Popery</hi> and <hi>Superſti<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>tion,</hi> may be taken away, and that the places formerly conſecrated, by Biſhops, and ſtill adored by the ignorant and ſuperſtitious (who call the <hi>Churches,</hi> and <hi>houſes of God</hi>) may be declared to have no inherent holineſſe in them: Alſo that the heathen names of dayes, and months may be aboliſhed, that ſo the people may learne to ſpeake the language of the <hi>Scriptures,</hi> and not of <hi>Aſhteroth:</hi> and that <hi>Jehovah</hi> &amp; not <hi>Jupiter; Chriſt</hi> and not <hi>Saturn,</hi> may be named; and written by us who profeſſe our ſelves to be among the beſt, and the reſormedſt of Chriſtians.</p>
            <p>And that you may (to uſe the
