A LOOKING GLASSE FOR THE SOVLE, VVorthy to be hung up in every House in this Kingdome, and to be looked in daily; for herein is to be seene what sinnes tend to the breach of every one of Gods Commandements, whereby every one of us may clearly see, how farre forth wee have had a hand in pulling downe this heavie Judgement of Warre upon this Nation. And so consequently, what cause wee have to humble our selves, and pray, and seeke Gods face, and turne from our evill wayes.

Sinnes against the first Commandement.

1 ATheisme Psal 14 1., which is when men either think there is no God, or live as if there were no God. 2. 1 Cor. 8 4. Idolatry, which is the having of a false God. 3. 1 Chro. 28. 9. Ignorance, uncapablenes of knowledge, errours and heresies. 4. Eccles. 12. 1. Gen. 40. 23. Forgetfulnesse of good things, especially of those that most concerne us, and chiefly at that instant when wee should make most use of them. 5. Isa. 44. 4. Re­membring of evill things, especially those that may most corrupt us, and chiefly then when we should be most free from the thought of them. 6. 1 Chro 28. 9. Unwillingnesse unto good things, principally to the best 7. Hos. 5. 11. Readinesse unto and wilfulnesse in evill, especially the worst. Luke 21. 19. Im­patience under Crosses. 8. Pro. 3. 5. Hardnesse of heart, benummednesse of Conscience, or hellish terrors and accusati­ons, proceeding from doing things without or against the Word of God.

Sinnes against the second Commandement.

1. Act. 17. 23. Base and unwarranted conceits of God, as when we frame any Image of him in our minds. 2. Exod. 34. 14. Worshipping of Images; 3. Rev. 19. 10. Adoration of Angels, Isa. 63. 16. or Saints, observing holy dayes, in devotion to them, Deut. 6. 13. or swearing by them. 4. Approbation of Idolatry, by presence, speech, gesture, silence; Deut. 7. 25. keeping of superstitious Relickes, and Monuments; 1 Cor. 5. 10. keeping fami­liar and unnecessary company with Idolaters, &c. 5. Tit. 3. 1. Neglect of any of Gods ordinances, as of preaching, hearing, reading, meditation, conference, the use of good Bookes, and of good Company, of private and publick prayer, fasting, and making of vowes. 6. Psal. 76. 11. Superstitious fa­sting, rash vowes, breach of lawfull vowes, abuse of lots, &c. and want of sorrow for being borne of Idolatrous parents, or forefathers.

Sinnes against the third Commandement.

1. 2 Sam. 12. 13. Profession joyned with profanenesse, whereby Gods name is dishonoured: 2. Deut. 6. 6. Abu­sing of Gods Word, either by fruitlesse speaking of it, or Pro. 17. 7. framing jests out of it, or against it, or by maintaining of sinne out of it, or by applying it to charmes. 3. Deut. 28. 59. Abusing the names or titles of God, either by way of admiration, as by saying in our common talke; O Lord, O Jesus, or else by cursing, 4. Zech. 8. 17. Swearing vainely, outragiously, or falsly: 5. Blasphemie. 6. Taking a lawfull oath without reverence or consideration. 7. Eccles. 5. 1. Praying without faith, feeling, reverence, fervency, not waiting for an answer; asking evill things, ayming Mat. 6. 4. more in our requests at the relieving of our necessities, then at the advancemēt of Gods glory. 8. Act. 10 33. Hea­ring, reading, meditating, conferring, singing of Psalmes, and receiving the Sacrament with­out preparation, attention, reverence, delight and profit. 9. Psal. 8. 3. Lightly passing over Gods great workes of creation, preservation, redemption; as also of other his mercies and judge­ments.

Sinnes against the fourth Commandement.

1. Exod. 20. 8. Neglect of preparation for the Sabbath before it come, and of fitting our hearts for holy services when it is come: 2. 1 Tim. 4. 13. prophane absence from, or unfruitfull presence at Gods Ordinances; 3. Luk. 17. 27. Excessive eating and drinking, thereby making our selves drousie, and unfit for duties; 4. Deut. 5. 14. Doing any ordinary worke of our calling; 5. All recreations which distract us; 6. Isa. 58. 13. Vaine and worldly thoughts and speeches; 7. Amos 8. 5. A secret desire that the Sabbath were over; 8. Neglect of calling our selves or others to a reckoning after the exercises are ended; 9. Giving libertie to our selves in the night before the Sabbath be ended.

Sinnes against the fifth Commandement.

Sinnes of children in respect of their parents.

1. Prov. 15. 10. Murmuring at their parents corrections, or any Ephes. 6. 1. disobedience to any lawful command, Pro. 30. 17. or contemning them for any defect of body or mind; 2. Pro. 23. 22. Unthankfulnesse, manifested in not relieving them, nor standing for their deserved credit.

Sinnes of Parents.

1. Ephes. 6. 4. Negligence, in not instructing their children betimes, or Pro. 19. 18. not correcting them till it be too late, or doing it with bitternesse, without compassion, instruction, and prayer. 2. Joh. 13. 13. Gi­ving them ill example; Gen. 4. 2. not bringing them up in some lawfull calling: 4. 1 Cor. 7. 36. Not bestowing them timely and religiously in marriage: 5. 1 King. 1. 6. Light behaviour before them, and too much fa­miliaritie with them, whereby they become vile in their eyes; Gen. 21. 7. a sinne peculiar to the mother, is refusing to nurse her children, when she is able and fit.

The sinnes of servants.

1. Gen 18. 19. Unadvised entertainment of sinfull servants: 2. Not using religious exercises with them, not admonishing, or Pro. 29. 19. correcting them, or doing it in an ill manner, or being more Luke 10. 41. troubled when they faile in their businesse, then when they are slack in Gods service. 3. James 5. 4. Not recompencing their labours, by giving them a due reward for their service. 4. Mat. 8. 6. Neglect of them in their sicknesse or unjust stopping of their wages for that time.

The sinnes of wives.

1. Ephes. 5. 33. Failing in reverence, which appeareth in froward lookes, speeches, and behaviour; 2. Disobedience in the Exod 23. 24. smallest matters.

The sinnes of the husband.

1. 1 Pet. 3. 7. Not dwelling with his wife: 2. Neglect of 1 Thes. 5. 11. edifying her by instruction and example: 3. denying her comfortable maintenance and imployment.

The sinnes common to them both.

1. Col. 3. 14. Want of love: 2. Bewraying each others infirmities, or discovering each others se­crets: 3. Tit. 2. 4. Jelousie: 4. Contention.

The sinnes of Subjects.

1. Rebellion. 2. Rom. 13. 7. Refusing to pay dues.

The sinnes of Magistrates.

1. Rom. 13 3, 4. Carelesnesse in establishing and promoting true Religion: 2. Carelesnesse of maintain­ing peace, and not providing that offenders may be punished, and well-doers incouraged.

Sinnes against the sixth Commandement.

1. Mar. 5. 22. Rash anger, envie, 1 Joh. 3. 15. hatred, malice: 2. Ephes. 4. 31. Brawling, reviling, threatning and provoking of others: 3. Fighting: 4. Crueltie in punishing, oppression: 5. Deut. 5. 17. Murdering our selves or others, or consenting thereunto. 6. Immoderate worldly sorrow. 7. Neglect of the use of meanes, either for the good of soule or body.

Sinnes against the seaventh Commandement.

1. Deut. 5. 10. Adultery, fornication, incest, rage, sodomie. 2. Ephes. 5. 3. All wantonnesse, secret or open, a­lone or with others: 3. 38. 10. Nocturnall polutions, lustfull dreames: 4. 2 Cor. 4. 16. Unholy marriages, in regard of Religion, age, nearnesse of bloud, want of parents consent: 5. Gal. 5. 13. Nourishing of the causes and occasions of wantonnesse, as impure lusts, gluttonie, drunkennesse, idlenesse, lasci­vious apparell, societie with lascivious persons, lewd books, songs or speeches, wanton looks, pictures, stage-playes, dancing, dalliance, &c.

Sinnes against the eight Commandement.

1. Col. 3. 5. Covetousnesse, and all desire of our Neighbours goods, robbing of our selves, by wast­fulnesse in dyet, apparell, gaming, idlenesse, unadvised suretiship, niggardlinesse, &c. 2. Pro. 18. 9. Rob­bing of others, in taking away the Deut. 5. 19. smallest things, either by 1 Thes. 4 6. fraud, or uncharitable inclo­sure, or dealing wrongfully with the goods of the deceased, or by deceit in buying or selling, or withholding things committed, or things sound, lent, earned, or otherwise due, Luke 19. 8. not ma­king of restitution, or counselling, or consenting to others in any of these things.

Sinnes against the ninth Commandement.

1. Deut. 5. 20. False witnesse-bearing in publick or private, or consenting thereunto: 2. Zech. 8. 17. Raising, spreading abroad, or Levit. 19. 16. listening to false reports of tale-bearers: 3. Rash suspition, Mat. 7. 1. hard judg­ing, interpreting things in the worst sence. 4. James 3. 17. Aggravating and discovering others infirmi­ties, without care of their credit, others edification, or our own good. 5. Flattering, lying, whether in jest or to a good end, boasting: 6. Want of care of our own or others good name, that God might have the more glory.

Sinnes against the last Commandement.

Deut. 5 21. The least evill motion or thought of failing in any of the foresaid duties, either to God, or to our neighbour, Rom. 7 7. although we consent not to it, but doe abhorre it presently, or doing any of the foresaid duties, with any spirit of vaine glory, or any other by-respect, and not in zeale of 1 Cor. 10. 31. Gods glory, and the good of our neighbour.
