ENGLANDS Oaths. Taken by all men of quallity, in the Church and Common-wealth of England

The Oath of Supremacy.

I A. B. doe utterly testifie and declare in my Conscience, that the Kings Highnesse is the onely Supreame Governour of this Realme, and all other his Highnesse Dominions and Countries, as well in all Spirituall or Ecclesiasticall things or causes, as Temporall: And that no forraine Prince, Person, Prelate, State or Potentate, hath or ought to have any Iurisdiction, Power, Superioritie, Preeminence or Authority Ecclesiasticall or Spirituall within this Realme. And therefore, I doe utterly renounce and forsake all forraine Iurisdictions, Powers, Superiorities and Authorities; and doe promise that from henchforth I shall beare faith and true Allegiance to the Kings Highnesse, his Heires and lawfull Successors: and to my power shall assist and defend all Iurisdictions, Priviledges, Preheminences and Authorities granted or belonging to the Kings Highnesse, his Heires and Successors, or united and annexed to the Imperiall Crowne of the [Page 2] Realme: So helpe me God: and by the Contents of this Booke.

The Oath of Allegiance.

I A. B. doe truely and sincerely acknowledge, professe, testifie and declare in my conscience before God and the world, That our Soveraigne Lord King CHARLES, is lawfull King of this Realme, and of all other his Majesties Dominions and Countreyes: And that the Pope neither of himselfe, nor by any Authority of the Church or Sea of Rome, or by any other meanes with any other, hath any power or Authority to depose the King, or to dispose of any of his Majesties Kingdomes or Dominions, or to Authorize any Forraigne Prince, to invade or annoy Him or His Countreyes, or to discharge any of his Subjects of their Allegiance and Obedience to His Majestie, or to give Licence or leave to any of them to beare Armes, raise Tumults, or to offer any violence or hurt to His Majesties Royall person, State or Government, or to any of His Majesties Subiects within His Majesties Dominions. Also I doe sweare from my heart, that, notwithstanding any Declaration or Sentence of Excommunication, [Page 3] or Deprivation made or granted, or to be made or granted, by the Pope or his Successors, or by any Authority derived, or pretended to be derived from him or his Sea, against the said King, His Heires or Successors, or any Absolution of the said Subjects from their Obedience; I will beare faith and true Allegiance to His Majestie, His Heires and Successors, and Him and Them will defend to the vttermost of my power, against all Conspiracies and Attempts whatsoever, which shall be made against His or their Persons, their Crowne and Dignitie, by reason or colour of any such Sentence, or Declaration, or otherwise, and will doe my best endeavour to disclose and make known unto his Majesty, His Heires and Successors, all Treasons and Traiterous Conspiracies, which I shall know or heare of, to be against Him, or any of them. And I do further sweare, That I do from my heart abhor, detest and abjure as impious and Hereticall, this damnable Doctrine and Position, That Princes which be Excommunicated or deprived by the Pope, may be Deposed or Murthered by their Subjects, or any other whatsoever. And I doe beleeve, and in conscience am resolved, that neither the Pope, nor any person whatsoever, hath power to absolve me of this Oath, or any part thereof; which I acknowledge by good and full Authority to bee lawfully ministred unto me, and doe renounce all Pardons and Dispensations to the contrary. And all these things I doe plainely and sincerely acknowledge [Page 4] and sweare, according to these expresse words by me spoken, and according to the plaine and common sence and understanding of the same words, without any Equivocation, or mentall evasion, or secret reservasion whatsoever. And I doe make this Recognition and acknowledgement heartily, willingly, and truely, upon the true Faith of a Christian. So helpe me GOD.

The late Protestation.

I A. B. doe in the presence of Almighty God, Promise, Vow, and Protest, to maintaine and defend, as far as lawfully I may, with my life, power, and estate, the true reformed Protestant Religion, expressed in the Doctrine of the Church of England, against all Popery, and Popish Innovation within this Realm, contrary to the same Doctrin, and according to the duty of my Allegiance, His Majesties Royall Person, Honour, and Estate; as also the Power and Priviledges of Parliament; The lawfull Rights and Liberties of the Subject, and every person that maketh this Protestation, in whatsoever he shall doe in the lawfull pursuance of the same. And to my power, and as farre as [Page 5] lawfully I may, I will oppose, and by all good wayes and meanes indeavour to bring to condigne punishment, all such as shall either by Force, Plots, Conspiracies, or otherwise, doe any thing to the contrary of any thing in this present Protestation contained. And further, that I shall in all just and Honourable wayes, endeavour to preserve the Vnion and Peace betweene the three Kingdomes of England, Scotland, and Ireland; And neither for Hope, Feare, nor other respect, shall relinquish the Promise, Vow, and Protestation.
