            <p>The EEBO-TCP project was divided into two phases. The 25,363 texts created during Phase 1 of the project have been released into the public domain as of 1 January 2015. Anyone can now take and use these texts for their own purposes, but we respectfully request that due credit and attribution is given to their original source.</p>
            <p>Users should be aware of the process of creating the TCP texts, and therefore of any assumptions that can be made about the data.</p>
            <p>Text selection was based on the New Cambridge Bibliography of English Literature (NCBEL). If an author (or for an anonymous work, the title) appears in NCBEL, then their works are eligible for inclusion. Selection was intended to range over a wide variety of subject areas, to reflect the true nature of the print record of the period. In general, first editions of a works in English were prioritized, although there are a number of works in other languages, notably Latin and Welsh, included and sometimes a second or later edition of a work was chosen if there was a compelling reason to do so.</p>
            <p>Image sets were sent to external keying companies for transcription and basic encoding. Quality assurance was then carried out by editorial teams in Oxford and Michigan. 5% (or 5 pages, whichever is the greater) of each text was proofread for accuracy and those which did not meet QA standards were returned to the keyers to be redone. After proofreading, the encoding was enhanced and/or corrected and characters marked as illegible were corrected where possible up to a limit of 100 instances per text. Any remaining illegibles were encoded as &lt;gap&gt;s. Understanding these processes should make clear that, while the overall quality of TCP data is very good, some errors will remain and some readable characters will be marked as illegible. Users should bear in mind that in all likelihood such instances will never have been looked at by a TCP editor.</p>
            <p>The texts were encoded and linked to page images in accordance with level 4 of the TEI in Libraries guidelines.</p>
            <p>Copies of the texts have been issued variously as SGML (TCP schema; ASCII text with mnemonic sdata character entities); displayable XML (TCP schema; characters represented either as UTF-8 Unicode or text strings within braces); or lossless XML (TEI P5, characters represented either as UTF-8 Unicode or TEI g elements).</p>

            <p>ACcording to the Orders ſent to mee and my ſon from your Lordſhips, wee have now ioyned our Forces together; and though the Enemy held all the paſſes from the Eaſt<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>riding to the Weſt, and by that means inter<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>cepted divers of our Letters, and thereby be<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>came acquainted with our appointments, and ſo indeavoured to prevent them; which forced mee to decline <hi>Selby,</hi> and make a paſſage over the River, ten miles below it in Marſhland, where my Men and Carriages being paſſed with ſome difficulty, on Sonday and Mon<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>day laſt, I inſtantly marched with the whole Army conſiſting of Two thouſand Horſe and Dragoons, and Two thouſand Foot or there<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>abouts, to Ferry-bridge, and ſo to <hi>Selby,</hi> where Colonell <hi>Iohn Belaſyſe</hi> (commanding in chief in <hi>Yorkſhire</hi>) then lay with an Army of Fifteen hundred Horſe, and Eighteen hundred Foot, as themſelves confeſſe, though Reports made it much more numerous.</p>

            <p>Upon Wedneſday, our Forlorn-Hope of Horſe beat in a partee of the Enemies Horſe, and followed them into the Town, taking di<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>vers of them priſoners, and the day being far ſpent, I quartered the Army within a mile of <hi>Selby</hi> that night, and drew them out again ear<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>ly the next morning, and then with the Foot in three diviſions, one led up by my ſelf, a ſecond by Sir <hi>Iohn Meldrum,</hi> and a third by Lieutenant Colonell <hi>Needham,</hi> fell upon the Town, to ſtorm it in three places altogether, where the Enemy received us with much cou<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>rage, and made ſtrong reſiſtance for two hours or thereabouts; but in concluſion, my own Foot Regiment forced a paſſage by the River ſide, and my ſon with his Regiment of Horſe ruſhed into the Town, where hee was incoun<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>tred by Colonell <hi>Belaſyſe,</hi> and the Enemies Horſe; but they being beaten back, and Maſter <hi>Belaſyſe</hi> himſelf wounded, and taken priſoner, and our Foot entred on all ſides the Town, the Enemy was wholly routed, and as many as could ſaved themſelves by flight, ſome to<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>wards <hi>Cawood,</hi> ſome towards <hi>Pontefract,</hi> and the reſt towards <hi>York,</hi> over the River by a Bridge of Boats laid by themſelves; We pur<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>ſued

            <p>Of my own Men, I loſt in the fight divers gallant Commanders and Souldiers, and very many ſore wounded; And indeed, all my Ar<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>my, both Commanders and common Souldi<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>ers, behaved themſelves with as much courage as ever I obſerved in Men.</p>
            <p>All which wee muſt acknowledge to God alone, who both infuſeth courage, and gives Victory where hee pleaſeth: I ſhall now, I hope, be able to raiſe more Forces in the coun<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>try, and improve this Victory that God hath beſtowed on us, to the beſt advantage.
