            <p>The EEBO-TCP project was divided into two phases. The 25,363 texts created during Phase 1 of the project have been released into the public domain as of 1 January 2015. Anyone can now take and use these texts for their own purposes, but we respectfully request that due credit and attribution is given to their original source.</p>
            <p>Users should be aware of the process of creating the TCP texts, and therefore of any assumptions that can be made about the data.</p>
            <p>Text selection was based on the New Cambridge Bibliography of English Literature (NCBEL). If an author (or for an anonymous work, the title) appears in NCBEL, then their works are eligible for inclusion. Selection was intended to range over a wide variety of subject areas, to reflect the true nature of the print record of the period. In general, first editions of a works in English were prioritized, although there are a number of works in other languages, notably Latin and Welsh, included and sometimes a second or later edition of a work was chosen if there was a compelling reason to do so.</p>
            <p>Image sets were sent to external keying companies for transcription and basic encoding. Quality assurance was then carried out by editorial teams in Oxford and Michigan. 5% (or 5 pages, whichever is the greater) of each text was proofread for accuracy and those which did not meet QA standards were returned to the keyers to be redone. After proofreading, the encoding was enhanced and/or corrected and characters marked as illegible were corrected where possible up to a limit of 100 instances per text. Any remaining illegibles were encoded as &lt;gap&gt;s. Understanding these processes should make clear that, while the overall quality of TCP data is very good, some errors will remain and some readable characters will be marked as illegible. Users should bear in mind that in all likelihood such instances will never have been looked at by a TCP editor.</p>
            <p>The texts were encoded and linked to page images in accordance with level 4 of the TEI in Libraries guidelines.</p>
            <p>Copies of the texts have been issued variously as SGML (TCP schema; ASCII text with mnemonic sdata character entities); displayable XML (TCP schema; characters represented either as UTF-8 Unicode or text strings within braces); or lossless XML (TEI P5, characters represented either as UTF-8 Unicode or TEI g elements).</p>

Knight, a Monethly Aſſeſſement to continue for ten Moneths from the firſt of February, 1644. to the first of December then next following,</hi> was Ordained to be taxed and leavied upon the City of <hi>London</hi> and other places and Coun<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>ties in the ſaid Ordinance mentioned: And by another Ordinance of Parliament, dated the thirteenth day of<hi>Auguſt,</hi> 1645. the ſaid Monethly aſſeſſement for maintenance of the ſaid Army was Ordained, and appoin<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>ted to continue and indure for ſix Moneths longer from the ſaid firſt day of <hi>December</hi> 1645. unto the firſt day of <hi>June</hi> then next following; And whereas by an Ordinance of Parliament dated the ſixteenth pay of <hi>Aprill,</hi> 1646. the ſaid Ordinance of the fifteenth of <hi>February,</hi> 1644. with all the Taxes, and payments therein mentioned were to con<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>tinue for foure Moneths longer, from the ſaid firſt of <hi>Iune,</hi> 1646. untill the firſt of <hi>Octob.</hi> following; And whereas alſo by ano<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>ther Ordinance of Parliament of the three and twentieth day of <hi>Iune</hi> laſt, 1647. ſeve<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>rall ſummes of money were to be taxed,

leavied, and paid for maintenance of the ſaid Army by a Monethly aſſeſſement, to continue for twelve Moneths from the five and twentieth day of <hi>March,</hi> 1647. to the five and twentieth day of <hi>March,</hi> 1648. And whereas by an Ordinance of Parlia<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>ment of the fifteenth of <hi>March</hi> laſt, 1647. the like ſummes of money upon the ſaid City are to be taxed, leavied, and paid for maintenance of the ſaid Army by a Month<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>ly aſſeſſement, to continue for ſix Months longer from the five and twentieth of <hi>March</hi> laſt to the nine and twentieth of <hi>September</hi> now next enſuing, as by the ſaid ſeverall Ordinances may appeare, And whereas many great and conſiderable ſummes of mony remaine in Arreare, and yet unpaid upon the ſaid ſeverall Ordinances with<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>in the ſaid City of <hi>London</hi> and Liberties thereof, to the diſcouragement of thoſe that have willingly paid their proportion, very evill example of others, and great hin<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>derance of payment of the Army; and to the end the ſaid Arrears may be ſpeedily

gotten in, and all obſtructions that hinder the comming in thereof be removed, It is Ordained by the Lords and Commons in Parliament aſſembled, and be it Ordained by the authority thereof, That the ſeverall perſons hereafter named ſhall be, and are hereby appointed Commiſſioners for the ſaid ſeverall taxes and aſſeſſements in the ſaid City, and in the ſeverall Wards, and Liberties in and belonging to the ſaid City reſpectively, to put the ſaid ſeverall Ordi<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>nances in execution, and have power, and are hereby authorized to execute, and per<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>forme all and every the powers and autho<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>rities compriſed in the ſaid Ordinances, or in any the Ordinances mentioned in the ſaid laſt recited ordinance of the fifteenth of <hi>March</hi> laſt, or every of them, in as full and ample manner to all intents and purpoſes as any the Committees or Commiſſioners in the ſaid ordinances named, or any of them might or could doe, or performe the ſame.</p>
