Anyone can now take and use these texts for their own purposes, but we respectfully request that due credit and attribution is given to their original source.</p>
            <p>Users should be aware of the process of creating the TCP texts, and therefore of any assumptions that can be made about the data.</p>
            <p>Text selection was based on the New Cambridge Bibliography of English Literature (NCBEL). If an author (or for an anonymous work, the title) appears in NCBEL, then their works are eligible for inclusion. Selection was intended to range over a wide variety of subject areas, to reflect the true nature of the print record of the period. In general, first editions of a works in English were prioritized, although there are a number of works in other languages, notably Latin and Welsh, included and sometimes a second or later edition of a work was chosen if there was a compelling reason to do so.</p>
            <p>Image sets were sent to external keying companies for transcription and basic encoding. Quality assurance was then carried out by editorial teams in Oxford and Michigan. 5% (or 5 pages, whichever is the greater) of each text was proofread for accuracy and those which did not meet QA standards were returned to the keyers to be redone. After proofreading, the encoding was enhanced and/or corrected and characters marked as illegible were corrected where possible up to a limit of 100 instances per text. Any remaining illegibles were encoded as &lt;gap&gt;s. Understanding these processes should make clear that, while the overall quality of TCP data is very good, some errors will remain and some readable characters will be marked as illegible. Users should bear in mind that in all likelihood such instances will never have been looked at by a TCP editor.</p>
            <p>The texts were encoded and linked to page images in accordance with level 4 of the TEI in Libraries guidelines.</p>
            <p>Copies of the texts have been issued variously as SGML (TCP schema; ASCII text with mnemonic sdata character entities); displayable XML (TCP schema; characters represented either as UTF-8 Unicode or text strings within braces); or lossless XML (TEI P5, characters represented either as UTF-8 Unicode or TEI g elements).</p>

            <head>To the READER.</head>
            <p>THIS <hi>Catalogue</hi> conſiſts of ſo many Excellent Books of the beſt Authors, that have treated of the Subjects mentioned in the Title Page, that I will not queſtion the Judgment of the Gentlemen the Buyers, by giving a particular Recommendatory Character of them. The Hiſtorical Part, both Forreign and Domestick, is the beſt and compleateſt that hath hitherto been preſented to the World; and if the names of many Authors and their Hiſtories, not hither<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>to to knowable, hath been acceptable, and confeſſedly uſeful to ſe<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>veral Gentlemen, I may much more reaſonably promiſe to my ſelf the expoſing the Books this way to Sale, will be extreamly deſirable, eſpecially if they will he pleaſed to conſider, that not one half of them mentioned in the enſuing <hi>Catalogue</hi> are by reaſon of their ſcarcity, at all times to be found, or at any Rate procured, when really wanted. I might further intimate. That ſome of the valuable Books are of the great Paper, and moſt of them as to their Binding, ſufficiently inviting, anſwering the preſent Mode, and commendable modern Faſhion of moſt Bookiſh Gentlemens Libraries, being generally curiouſly and richly bound.</p>
            <p>This Sale will begin on <hi>Monday</hi> the Eighth day of <hi>February, 1685/6,</hi> at <hi>Bridges Coffee Houſe,</hi> in <hi>Popes Head Alley,</hi> in <hi>Corn<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>hil,</hi> from the Hours of <hi>9</hi> to <hi>12</hi> in the Morning, and from <hi>2</hi> in the Afternoon till <hi>7</hi> in the Evening, continuing daily till all the Books are ſold.</p>

            <head>Conditions of Sale.</head>
            <p n="1">I. THat he who bids moſt, is the Buyer, and if any Difference ariſe which the Company cannot decide, then the Book or Books ſhall forthwith be Expoſed to Sale again.</p>
            <p n="2">II. That all the Books in this Catalogue, not otherwiſe ex<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>preſſed, (for ought we know) are perfect; but if any of them appear to be otherwiſe before they be taken away, the Buyer ſhall have his Choice of taking or leaving them.</p>
            <p n="3">III. That the Money for the Book or Books ſo bought, is to be paid at the Place of Sale within a Fortnight after the Auction is ended; where the Book or Books ſo bought, ſhall be ready to be delivered.</p>
            <p n="4">IV. That the Books will be expoſed to view from 9 to 12 in the Morning, and from 2 to 6 in the Evening, for one whole Week preceding the Sale, to all Gentlemen, <hi>&amp;c.</hi> which by the Undertaker is deſired, the Books being extraordinarily qualified as to the binding, <hi>&amp;c.</hi>
