❧ A Publication concerning the Custome or Subsidie of all such sorts of Silks with Lawnes and Cambricks, as are granted by her Maiesties Letters Patents vnder the great Seale of England, vnto Thomas Bellet and Roger Houghton of London Gent.

HEr Maiestie by her Letters Patents bearing date the ix. of Ianuary in the xliii. yeere of her Maiesties most gratious raigne, hath bene plea­sed to grant vnto the aforesaid Patentees All the Customes and Subsidies of Veluets, Sattens, Taffeties & Sarcenets, whether wrought or vnwrought, Or by what other name or title soeuer, And also of all Lawnes and Cambricks, Callico lawnes, Stript lawnes, and others, Together with all maner of Raw silke, Sleauesilks & Sowing silkes whatsoeuer, which shalbe brought into the Realme of England or do­minions thereof from any parts beyonde the Seas by may of Merchandize, reprisall, or otherwise howsoeuer, During the space of ten yeeres from the first of March next ensuing. And for better execution hereof,

FIrst her Highnesse will and pleasure is, That the said Patentees or their Assignes shall haue a conuenient place in the Custome houses of London, &c. to receiue and collect without interruption of all persons watsoeuer the foresaid Customes and Subsidies. And that the Clerkes of Shippers entries shall suffer the Patentees or their assignes at all times to take true Copies of the same. And that none of her Maiesties officers shall at any time make compositions, nor giue order for the landing of these goods, nor giue foorth and Bills of store, nor make any Certificates for the carying of any of these goods from port to port, without the consent and subscription of the Patentees or their Assignes, nor any of her Maiesties Wayters or Searchers shall entermedle with any the demised premisses, except such as shalbe thereunto appointed by the Patentees or their Assignes.

ANd also her Maiestie straightly chargeth and commandeth all Keykeepers, and Wharfingers, that they suffer not any ships wherein any of these goods shalbe brought, to fall vnto their Keyes, before Entrie made with the Patentee or his Assignes, And vpon demaund by them made, shal deliuer true notes of these goods which shalbe de­liuered at their seuerall Keyes, And that no goods entred at sight, shalbe opened without the presence of the Patentees or some of their deputies, So as they be attendant for the Merchants more speedie dispatch.

ANd where by the Lawes of this Realme, All these sorts of Merchandizes ought to be sealed before they be put to sale: Her Maiestie notwithstanding is gratiously plea­sed in fauour of such Merchants as pay their Custome duely, to giue no authoritie by these Letters Patents to seale any goods, but onely the goods of such Merchants as shall after the date hereof be contricted for concealing of these kinde of Customes before the Lord Treasourer for the time being, or the Chanceller and Barons of her Maiesties Exchequer or any two of them: And that then after such conuiction, none of the said Merchants shall at any time during the said terme put any of the said Mer­chandizes to sale by them hereafter to be brought in before they be sealed, vpon paine of forfaiture.

ANd where it is supposed that many deceits be committed by the Masters and owners of ships, Keykeepers, Mariners and Watermen: For preuention hereof the Pa­tentee hath power to examine vpon oath them and other persons, whom it may concerne, aswell as any of her Maiesties Customers, Searchers, and such other Of­ficers, may do in like case. Alwayes prouided that this shall not extend to giue any power for the swearing or vniust molestation of any Marchant, Factour, or owner of such goods or Mercandize.

ANd further if shalbe lawfull for the said Patentees or their Deputies in the presence of some of her Maiesties Officers, and in some other Maiesties Storehouses, to open any other goods, wherein they shall suspect any of these goods to be packed. And for the better execution of the seruice, at all times with an Officer to search any Ship or vessell, shoppe, warehouse, &c. And at their owne charges to put aboord of any Ship at her first arriual one man or more to see the discharging & vnlading thereof.

ANd lastly her highnesse pleasure is, That all her Officers aswell of the Admitaltie as otherwise, shalbe ayding and assisting vnto the Patentees and their Deputies for the better execution of this Patent, and performance of this seruice.
