ARTICLES ACCORDED FOR THE Truce Generall. Faythfully translated out of the French Coppy: Printed by Fredericke Morel: ordy­nary Printer to the King.

THat there shalbe good and loial Truce and ceasing from Armes generall: by all the realme, cuntry, landes and Signeuries of the same: and of the protection of the crowne of France: for the tyme & space of three monethes to come: vz. in the Isle of France the day of the publication which shalbe made of it at S. Dennis: in the same day and from the day after these present articles shalbe stayed & signed: In the gouernementes of Champaigne, Pi­cardie, Normandy, Chartres, Orleans and Berry, Touraine Aniou and le Maine eight dayes after the date of the same: In the gouernements of Bretaigne, Poictou, Angomois, Xaincttoge, Lymosin, high and low marche, Burbonois Auuergne, Lyonnois and Bourgongne, 15. daies after: in the gouernements of Guyenne Languedoc, Prouence, & Dauphinne 20. daies after the conclusion of the said present treaty and yet notwithstanding shal end euery where at lyke day.

[Page 2] II All persons Ecclesiasticall, nobilitie, inhabitantes of townes of the plaine cuntry & others, may duringe this present truce gather their frutes and reuenues, and enioy them in what part soeuer they are scituate and being: and shall reenter into their howses, and castles of the feeldes and those which with hould them shal be bound to restore them and leaue them free from all hinderances: vppon the charge neuerthelesse that they may not there make any fortification, duringe the said truce: and here are excepted the howses, and castles: where garrisones are imployed in the e­state of the warre, which shall not be restored: neuer­thelesse the Proprietares shall enioy the fruites and reuenues which belong to them: the whole notwith­stood the guiftes and seysures which should haue bene made, the which may not impeach the effecte of the present accord.

III. It shalbe lawfull to all persons, of what quality or condition soeuer they be, to stay freely in their owne howses which they hold at this present with their fa­milies, except in the townes and strong places which are garded in with those whiche are absent from them by occasion of the present troubles shal not be receyued to stay there without leaue of the gouernour.

[Page] IIII. The labourees may in all freedome doe their la­boures and accustomed woorkes without hinderance or molestation in what manner soeuer: vppon paine of death to them which shall do the contrary.

V. The Cariage and conuayence of all sort of vituals, and the commerce and trafficke of all merchandices: except armes and munitions of warre shalbe free as well by water as land in the townes of the one party and the other: in payenge the peages and impositi­ons as they ryse at this tyme in the Tole houses which for the same effect are established and following Pan­cartes and tables herevpon before stayed: except in re­gard of Parts: which shalbe payed according the per­ticuler treatie of the same: the whole vpon payne of confiscation in case of fraude: and without that those which shall find them shall be hindered to bring backe the merchandise and horses which shall conduct them vnto the Tolehouses where they shal haue so offended: And where violence shalbe vsed against such, there Iustice shalbe excecuted as well of the confiscation as of the excesse, by those which shall haue commande­ment ouer the persons which shall haue committed it: and yet neuerthelesse the sayde merchandyses, horses, victuals nor those which shall conduct may not be stay­ed [Page] within the Balieue of Paris, although they haue not accquitted the saide Impositions. But vpon the complaynte and pursuite, right shall be done to whome it appertaines.

VI. The sayd impositions or any other new erected du­ring the sayd truce may not be augmented, nor any o­ther Tolehouse erected but those which are alredye established.

VII. Euery man may freelye trauell thorough all the Realme without constraint of taking pasporte: And yet neuerthelesse no man may enter into Townes or stronge places of the contrarye part [...] without other armes then the footeman with his sword & the horse­man with his sword, Pistolle, or Harquebuse: and that not without sending before to aduertise those which shall haue commaundement there: the which shall be enioyned to giue permission of their entraunce, if it be not that the quality & number of persons should giue iust cause of ielousie: of the scarcety of the place where they shall commaund, the which is remittted to their iudgement and discretion. And if any of the contra­ry part were entred into any of the sayde places with­out being declared such, and to haue the sayde permis­sion: They shall bee lawfull Prise. And to preuent [Page 5] further disputes that might bee inferred vppon this poynt, those which commaund in the sayde places ac­cording to the sayd permission, shalbe bound to giue it in writing without any defray.

VIII. The money of Taxses and Assesments shalbe leui­ed as they haue beene heretofore according to the de­partments made, and commissions sent from one part to another at the beginning of the yeare: except in re­gard of the places taken since the sending of the sayde conditions in which ye Gouernours & Officers of such places shall accord particularly, and without preiudice likewise of other particular accordes and treaties al­ready made for leauy of the sayde Taxes and Asses­ments which shall be entertayned and obserued.

IX. Yet notwithstanding such may not be leauyed by anticipation of the quarters, but onely the quarter running on, and that by Officers of the Election: the which in case resistaunce be made shall haue recourse to the Gouernour of the next towne of their side to bee assisted of forces: and yet neuerthelesse shall not for this cause be exacted for the defray but after the rate of one shilling in the pounde for the Summes for which [Page 6] the constraintes shalbe made.

X As touching the Arrerages of Taxes and Asses­ments there shall bee none leuyed of eyther part, fur­ther then the sayd quarter, running on and during the time of the same. if it be not an other quarter which is due aboue the already passed.

XI. These which at this time be Prisoners of the warre and haue not compounded for their Ransome shall bee deliuered xv. dayes after the publication of the sayde Truce viz. the common Souldiour without ransome, the other men of warre hauing pay of eyther side pro­curing one quarter of their pay: except the Leaders and cheefe of Horsemen the which together with o­ther Gentlemen not bearing charge, shall be acquitted for the halfe yeares woorth of their Reuenewe: and also other persons shall bee vsed as touchig their ran­some as cuteouslye as may be respecting their facul­ties and callinge: And if there bee eyther Woman or Mayde Prisoner they shall be presently set at libertye without paying Ransome, and also Children vnder the age of sixteene and from sixty vpward not bearing Armes.

XII. That there shall not bee during the tyme of the sayd Truce any enterprise or attempt vppon any place of ei­ther [Page 7] parte, nor any other Act of Hostilitie: And if any one shoulde in this poynt, the cheefe and Gouernours shall see amendes made or punish the Offenders as troublers of publicke quiet: yet so that neuerthelesse the sayde punishments may not bee cause of breach to the sayd League.

XIII. If any shall refuse to obay the contents of the sayd Articles: the cheefe of that partie shall doe all his en­deuour and vse what meanes possibly hee may to con­strayne such thereunto: And where within fifteene daies after the requisition which shall be made, executi­on should immediatly follow: it shall be lawfull for the cheefe of the other partie to make warre on him or them which so should refuse to doe instice, without a­ny assistaunce of his owne, partlie in any kinde how­soeuer.

XIIII. It shall not bee lawfull to take of newe any places during the present Truce to fortefie them, notwith­standing they were not held of any body.

XV. All men of warre of eyther syde shall be put in gari­son not being permitted to range and forage the cun­try to the harme of the people ane ruines of the plaine cuntry.

[Page 8] XVI. The Prouostes of the marshals shall performe their charges, on al prayes in the fieldes or cuntry, and pu­nishing wronges without distruction of parties, vpon payne of sendinge them to the Iudges to whom the knowledge thereof ought to belong.

XVII. It shall not be lawfull to picke quarrelles anew by assembling any frendes for differences hapned by rea­son of these present troubles be it for taking of any per­son, howse, castelles or other occasion whatsoeuer du­ring the tyme of this truce.

XVIII. The gouernors and lieutenantes generall of both sydes shall assemble themselues in euery prouince pre­sently vpon publication of the present trety where they shall depute commissaries of their parte to see vnto what soeuer shalbe necessary for the excecution thereof for the profit and good of such as they haue vnder them, and where it shalbe thought good and necessary to ad anie thing more, to correct or deminish any thing for the perticular good of the said prouince they shal ad­uertise their cheefes or gouernors to prouide accor­dingly.

[Page 9] XIX. These present Articles are accorded without inten­tion of preiudice to the accordes and particuler agree­ments made betweene the gouernors and lieftenants generall of the prouinces which haue bene confermed and approued by the cheefe of both parties.

XX. No enterprises shall bee made duringe the presente Truce by one or other side vppon the Countries, goods & Subiects of ye Princes which haue assisted thē: as againe the sayd Princes shall not on their parte enter­prise any thing against this Realme and Countrey beinge in the Protection of the Crowne of Fraunce. But the sayd Princes shall retyre out of them present­ly (vppon the conclusion of this present treatie) their forces which are in the Fielde and shall not make anye re-enter of them during the sayd time: And as touch­ing those which are in Brittaine they shal be sent back or seperated, and put in garrison in such places as may not giue matter of suspect, and as for other Prouinces or places where there be straungers in Garrison, the number of the sayd straungers being in pay of the said Princes it may not be augmented during the tyme of the sayd Truce: the which the Chiefe of both parties promise respectiuely for the sayd Princes, and thereun­to bind their faith and honour: And yet notwithstan­ding the sayd promise may not extend to the Duke of Sauoye: but if he will be comprisd in the same tretye [Page 10] sending his declaration within one monthhe then shal be resolued to the common good of both parties.

XXI. The Embassadors Agents and leggers of foraine Princes which haue assisted either partie, hauing pas­porte from the cheefe of the said partie which they haue assisted may freelie returne & in all surety without ha­uing need of any other pasporte then this present trea­ty: So neuerthelesse that they shall not enter into any towne or stronge place of the aduerse parte but with licence of the gouernors,

XXII. That on eyther syde pasportes shalbe geuen to such as respectiuely shalbe sente to beare the saide Treaty into euery of the saide prouinces where it shalbe requi­site.

Made and accorde in the little towne betweene Paris and S. Denis the laste day of Iuly 1593. by sound of the trompet and proclamation in places accustomed. And is signed in the originall: Henry and Charles de Lorrayne and Below: Rusé and Baudouin.
