Users should be aware of the process of creating the TCP texts, and therefore of any assumptions that can be made about the data.

Text selection was based on the New Cambridge Bibliography of English Literature (NCBEL). If an author (or for an anonymous work, the title) appears in NCBEL, then their works are eligible for inclusion. Selection was intended to range over a wide variety of subject areas, to reflect the true nature of the print record of the period. In general, first editions of a works in English were prioritized, although there are a number of works in other languages, notably Latin and Welsh, included and sometimes a second or later edition of a work was chosen if there was a compelling reason to do so.

Image sets were sent to external keying companies for transcription and basic encoding. Quality assurance was then carried out by editorial teams in Oxford and Michigan. 5% (or 5 pages, whichever is the greater) of each text was proofread for accuracy and those which did not meet QA standards were returned to the keyers to be redone. After proofreading, the encoding was enhanced and/or corrected and characters marked as illegible were corrected where possible up to a limit of 100 instances per text. Any remaining illegibles were encoded as <gap>s. Understanding these processes should make clear that, while the overall quality of TCP data is very good, some errors will remain and some readable characters will be marked as illegible. Users should bear in mind that in all likelihood such instances will never have been looked at by a TCP editor.

The texts were encoded and linked to page images in accordance with level 4 of the TEI in Libraries guidelines.

Copies of the texts have been issued variously as SGML (TCP schema; ASCII text with mnemonic sdata character entities); displayable XML (TCP schema; characters represented either as UTF-8 Unicode or text strings within braces); or lossless XML (TEI P5, characters represented either as UTF-8 Unicode or TEI g elements).

1688 THE Prince of Orange ſet Sail (with 50 Capital Men of War, 26 ſmaller, 25 Fireſhips, 300 Fly-boats, Pinks &c.) for England, but by a Storm that Night was driven back again. The Birth of the Prince of Wales was examined before the Privy-Council. The Earl of Sunderland put out of the Council, & Secretary of State. The Lord Viſcount Preſton made Secretary in his room. The Prince of Orange ſet Sail with the Fleet, that he had put out on the 19th of Octob. with about 100 ſmall Ships more than was then, ſo here was 500. A Proclamation againſt the Prince of Orange's Manifeſto. The Dutch Fleet Sailed by Dover, and loſt a ſmall Veſſel of about 100 Men. The Prince of Orange Landed at Torbay, nigh Dartmouth, in Devon ſhire, with the Dutch Army, about 15000 Men. The Lord Lovelace, and 13 of his Party, were Taken at Cirenceſter, as they were going to the Prince of Orange. Dr. Lamplugh Biſhop of Exeter, having left Exeter on the Prince of Orange's coming, came up to London, and King James made him Arch-Biſhop of York. The Lords publiſh an Order for the quieting of the Iriſh. His Royal Highneſs invites K. James to London. K. James returns thither, where he exerciſes for a ſhort while a Regal Authority. K. James leaves London and goes to Rocheſter, and thence to France, whereby he Abdicates his Kingdom. The Prince of Orange came to St. James's, and his Forces to Lond. The Prince of Orange viſited the Queen Dowager at Sommerſet-Houſe. And this day the Prince and Princeſs of Denmark came to Whitehall. The Aldermen and Citizens of London waited on the Prince of Orange at St. James's. The Prince of Orange publiſhed an Order to return the Arms into the Publick Store, and an Order about Quartering of Souldiers. The Lords Spiritual and Temporal aſſembled at Weſtminſter, and ordered F. Guine, Eſq to ſign ſuch Orders as were made by them. The Prince of Orange ordered the French Ambaſſadour to leave England. The Peers preſent to the Prince of Orange two Addreſſes; the firſt of Thanks, &c. and to deſire his Highneſs to Accept the Government till Jan. 22d next; the ſecond, to iſſue out Letters to the Coroners to chooſe Convention-men to ſit Jan. 22. The Aldermen and Citizens of London agreed to the ſaid Addreſſes. The Prince of Orange gave his Anſwer to the ſaid Addreſſes. The Prince of Orange put out his Declaration, authorizing Sheriffs, Juſtices, &c. to act. The ſame day his Highneſs receiv'd the Sacrament at St. James's, by the Hands of the Biſhop of London. The Prince of Orange put out a Declaration, for the better Collecting the Publick Revenue. The Ld Dartmouth, with the Fleet, came into the Downs. The Prince of Orange publiſhed an Order for regular Election of Convention-men. Dr. Seth Ward, Bp. of Sarum, died Coll. John Darcy, Heir to the Earl of Holderneſs, died. James Howard, E. of Suffolk, died. The Prince of Orange publiſhed a Declaration againſt Quartering Souldiers in Private-houſes. The Prince found but 40000 l. in the Treaſury. The City of London agreed to lend his Highneſs 100000 l. but being raiſed by Subſcriptions it amounted to above 150000 l. Scotland Addreſs the Prince of Orange, to take their Government upon him till March next. His Highneſs puts out a Declaration to aſſure the Mariners and Seamen of their Pay. The Convention met at Weſtminſter. The upper Houſe choſe the Marqueſs of Hallifax for their Speaker, and the Commons choſe H. Powle, Eſq then they deſired the Prince of Orange to take on him the Adminiſtration of the Government for a farther time; alſo ordered a Thankſgiving-day to be kept Jan. 31. at London, &c. and Feb. 14 in all England. The Commons voted, That King James the Second having endeavour'd to ſubvert the Conſtitution of this Kingdom, by breaking the original Contract between King and People; and by the Advice of Jeſuits, and other wicked Perſons, having violated the Fundamental Laws; and having withdrawn himſelf out of this Kingdom, hath Abdicated the Government, and that the Throne is thereby vacant. While the Convention were agreeing to Inveſt the Prince of Orange with the Regal Authority, his Royal Highneſs being acquainted with their Deſign, ſends a Squadron of 12 Men of War to fetch over his Princely Conſort. The Houſe of Lords aſſerts the Succeſſion of the Princeſs of Orange to the Crown of England. The Lords aſſented to the Vote. The Princeſs of Orange goes from the Hague, and embarks at the Brill, the people by redoubled Acclamation expreſſing their Joy at the Occaſion of her Journey; and She is attended by Five of the Deputies of the Admiralty. She comes to London. The two Houſes in Parliament fully agreed, that the late K. James did endeavour to extirpate the Proteſtant Religion, and to overthrow the Laws and Liberties of this Kingdom, and having Abdicated the Government, that the Throne thereby became vacant; and that the Prince and Princeſs of Orange ought to be King and Queen. The ſame day her Royal Highneſs arrived in the River of Thames in the Afternoon. The Prince and Princeſs of Orange Proclaimed King and Queen of England, France and Ireland, and in divers places of England in this Month. The Parliament grant his Majeſty 600000 l. to enable him to repay to the States the Summs which they had laid out for the fitting out of the Fleet that came with him from Holland, and 600000 l. beſides to begin the War in Ireland. K. William made a Speech to the Lords and Commons at Weſtmin. The Biſhop of London and the Clergy of the City waited on King William at Whitehall. King William's Declaration to order the Iriſh to lay down their Arms by April following. K. William ſigned the Act for the ſitting of the Parliament, and after the King and Queen went to Hampton-Court. His Majeſty ſends Admiral Herbert with 30 Men of War to cruiſe on the Iriſh Coaſts, to hinder the French from landing. A Proclamation for the Diſcovery of Mr. Brent. Another for bringing in Arms imbezell'd. His Majeſty gives Orders for the fitting out a Fleet of 60 Men of War, and raiſing of ſeveral new Regiments. Serj. Maynard, Serj. Rawlinſon, and Sir Anthony Keck, are made Commiſſioners of the great Seal of England: Henry Pollexfen, Eſq Attorney-General: Sir G. Treby, Sollicitor-General: Lord Willoughby, Chancellor of the Dutchy of Lancaſter: Lord Lovelace, Captain of the Band of Penſioners: Lord Lucas, chief Governour of the Tower of London. The Earl of Sandwich his Funeral. William Harbord, Eſq ſworn of the Privy-Council. The Brandenburghs got a Victory over the French at Nuis. The Lords and Commons preſent an Addreſs to ſtand by K. William with their Lives and Fortunes K. William deſires their care of the Dutch, Ireland, and the Fleet. Arthur Herbert, Eſq John Earl of Carbury, Sir Michael Wharton, Bar. Sir Tho. Lee, Bar. A Proclamation for Crowning King William and Queen Mary, and proclaimed at London on the 20th for the Coronation to be on the 11th of April next. The Convention of Scotland met, and choſe Duke Hamilton Speaker, and on the 23d ſent their Anſwer to King William's Letter, by the Lord Roſſe. Sir John Chapman, Lord Mayor of London, died. Sir John Berry came into the Downs with a ſquadron of Men of War. The Lords Lieutenants of all the Counties of England appointed by K. William. Alderman Pilkington choſe Lord Mayor of London for the remainder of the Year. K. William ſigned the Act for a preſent aid of 412000 l. The Lord Coot made Treaſurer and and Receiver General to Q. 1689 A Proclamation for bringing in of Arms. The Convocation of Scotland voted the Throne vacant; and on the 4th voted to ſettle the Crown on King William and Queen Mary; and on the 11th of April, the ſame day that they were Crown'd in England, they were Proclaimed at the Market-Croſs in Edenburgh with all the Joy that could be expreſt. K. William paſſed 3 Acts of Parliament at Weſtminſter. Coll. Cunningham and Coll. Richards Shipt their Regiments at Liverpool, in Lancaſhire, for Ireland. Duke Frederick Mareſchal de Scomberg, and William Earl of Devonſhire made Knights of the Garter; Dr. Burnet, Biſhop of Sarum, ſworn Chancellor of that ORder. Duke of Ormond inſtall'd Knight of the Garter. Admiral Herbert ſailed with his Fleet from Spithead. Monſieur d'Avaux, the French Ambaſſadour, made his publick Entrance into Dublin, and had his Audience of K. James II. at the Caſtle. The Iriſh beat by a Sally made by the Proteſtants out of Colerain. The Houſe of Commons walked on foot from Weſtminſter to Whitehall, to congratulate their Majeſties on their Coronations. The Houſe of Commons humbly requeſt his Majeſty, That he would declare War againſt the French King; and promiſe to ſtand by him, and to aſſiſt him in the carrying on the War, to the utmoſt of their power. The Convention of Scotland ſends the Earl of Argyle, Sir James Montgomery and Sir Joh. Dalrimple to offer the Crown of Scotland to his Majeſty, and take the Oaths of Allegiance, &c. as their Repreſentatives. Six Hundred Medals of Gold, worth 3 l. a piece, are diſtributed, each Member of the Houſe of Commons being preſented with one▪ They had the King and Queen's Effigies on one ſide, and on the other a Phaeton, ſtruck with Thunder by Jupiter, with this Inſcription, Ne totus abſumatur Orbis. Admiral Herbert arrived at Kingſale in Ireland. King James with his Army before London-derry. George Jeffereys, Baron of Wemm and late Lord Chancellor of England, died in the Tower of London, and was there buried privately the Sunday-night following, by an Order his Relations got from K. William. The Sieur de Schmittan, Envoy extraordinary from the Duke of Brandenburgh, had Audience of the King and Queen at Hampton-Court. Geo. Booth, Eſq Sir Rich. Temple, Sir John Worden, Sir Rob. Southwel, Sir Rob. Clayton, Sir Patience Ward, made Commiſſioners of the Cuſtoms. The Lords Addreſs to King William to ſupport the Church of England, and to call a Convocation. Sir Henry Fane, Sir Henry Aſhurſt, Sir Hum. Edwin, Tho. Frankland Eſq Fran. Perry Eſq John Danvers Eſq and John Wilcox Jun. Eſq made Commiſſioners for the Exciſe. The Earl of Danby made Marqueſs of Caermarthen. King William paſſed Six Acts of Parliament. An Addreſs of the Houſe of Commons to K. William for a War with France, and the King's Anſwer to it. The Baron de Schutz, Envoy Extraordinary from the Duke of Luxenburgh, &c. had Audience of their Majeſties at Hampton-Court. Two Proclamations came out: 1. To incourage French Proteſtants. 2. For prohibiting French Goods. The Eſtates of Scotland, Named the Earl of Argyle, Sir James Montgomery, and Sir John Dalrimple, to go Commiſſioners for England, to offer the Crown of Scotland to K. William and Q. Mary, which was done accordingly on the 11th of May, in great Solemnity, in the Banqueting-Houſe at Whitehall, to which Place the Commiſſioners came by Poſt. Arrived at Portſmouth the Wolf, from Virginia, having on Board, the Lord Howard of Effingham, Governour of Virginia. King William put out Two Proclamations for prohibiting Sea-men to ſerve Forreign Princes, &c. King William paſſed (at Weſtminſter) the Poll-Act, and Two more. A Fight betwixt Admiral Herbert and the French at Bantry Bay in the N. W. of Ireland. The Eſtates of Scotland Adjourned to the 21st Inſtant. A Call of Serjeants at Law, viz. Sir Hen. Pollexfen, Nich. The Thankſgiving-day was kept in Scotland, for their Deliverance from Popery and Slavery. K. William gave his Royal Aſſent to 5 Acts at Weſtminſter. The Deputies ſent by the Convention of Scotland, arrive at London, and diſcharge their Truſt, by preſenting the Crown of their Kingdom to his Majeſty, and taking the Oaths. K. William came to Portſmouth, and on Board the Elizabeth Frigot, dined with Adm. Herbert, where he declared his Royal Intention to make Admiral Herbert an Earl; and there Knighted Captain Joh. Aſhby, and Capt. Clowdeſ. Shovell, and the King return'd that Evening to Hampton-Court, after giving 2600 l. amongſt the Wounded, &c. Sea-men. A great Sally by London-derry Men, with ſucceſs. George Lord Melvill made ſole Secretary of State in Scotland Frederick Count de Schomberg, made General of all his Majeſty's Forces, Maſter General of the Ordinance, and of his Majeſty's Privy-Council, Baron of Teys, Earl of Brantford, Marqueſs of Harwich, and Duke of Schomberg. Sir Robert Wright, late Lord Chief Juſtice, died in New-gate. The Aſſiſtence Frigot came into Plymouth with the Body of the late Duke of Albemarle. K. William's Proclamation for a Faſt to be kept about London on the 5th of June, on the 19th all England over. K. William gave his Royal Aſſent to the Act for Toleration of Diſſenters, and Two Acts more on 28th. The King makes the Eſtates of Scotland a Convention. Vice-Admiral Almonde arrived at Portſmouth with part of the Dutch Fleet. The Dutcheſs of Albemarle arriv'd at Plymouth, from Jamaica. The Duke of Somerſet, inſtalled Chancellor of Cambridge. His Majeſty having made fruitleſs endeavors to oblige the French to Fight him, blows up the Fortifications of Beaumont before the Duke of Luxemburgh's Face; and then leaves his Camp, to divert himſelf at Loo. The Mareſchal de Luxemburgh, who had ſo carefullyavoided the Fight while the King was with the Army, no ſooner hears that he is gone, but he falls on our Rear with all his Horſe, but is ſo vigorouſly repuls'd by the Prince de Waldeck, that he loſes many of his Men, and comes ſhort of his Deſign. Adm. Ruſſel ſent in Vice-Admiral Rook to burn the French Ships which he had forc'd a-ſhore near La Hogue; he burnt 21 of the biggeſt Ships, beſides 2 Frigats, and other ſmall Veſſels. At our Camp at Gammen, about a quarter paſt Two a-clock, there happen'd an Earthquake, and was very ſenſible to the whole Camp; the King was at Dinner, in an old decay'd Houſe, which ſhaking very much, his Majeſty was prevail'd with to riſe from the Table and go out of the Houſe; but the Surprize was ſoon over. The French beſiege Hiedelburgh, and took both it and the Caſtle in 2 days time, and deſtroy'd the Town; as they had done formerly to Spire Manheim, Frankendal, and other Places in the Palatinate. The Imperial Huſſars met with a French Party, and cut them all in pieces, except Two, whom Prince Lewis ſent back to the French Army, to let them know it was becauſe they burnt Heidelburgh, and Maſſacred the Inhabitants, and likewiſe broke the Cartel ſetled between the Two Armies. James parted from St. Germain's (the French King having the Night before taken his leave of him) and went in a Poſt-Calaſh to Calais; being come to St. Dennis, he ſign'd and Inſtrument or Deed in the preſence of a publick Notary, and ſent it afterwards to the French Court, by which ('tis ſaid) he obliges himſelf to repay the French King the Expences he has put him to. Mareſchal de Boufflers drew Forces from the French Frontier-Garriſons of Flanders and Picardy towards Dunkirk and Calais. They were to Embark for England. King James came to Calais. Monſieur Gabaret had the Command of the Men-of-War for the Expedition, being 17 or 18, and went on Board the 28th paſt. A Proclamation for Encouragement of Sea-men. The Garriſon of Centa ſprung a Counter-mine by which and with their Sallies they deſtroy'd many Moors. The Town and Magazine of Givet deſtroy'd by the Allies. Three Guernſy-Privateers have taken 17 or 18 French Prizes laden with Wine, Salt, and Brandy. The Duke of Wirtenburgh arrived with Forces from Flanders. The Earl of Athlone burnt the Town and Magazine of Givet, conſiſting of all manner of Stores for an Army of 100000 Men for Three Months. The place is put under Contribution, part paid, and for the reſt Hoſtages given. A Proclamation by the King for a publick Thankſgiving. Clancey, a Peruk-maker in Covent-Garden, and Captain Donolow, both Iriſh-Men, perſwaded Cap. Porter to go over to France, promiſing him King James's Pardon, and a Penſion of a 1000 l. per annum, and 600 Guineas in hand: He met them according to Appointment at the Dog-and-Partridge in Drury-lane, where they gave him 300 Guineas, and Billets for the reſt; and then Capt. Porter gave the ſingal to the Meſſengers that were ready to ſeize on them: and they were committed to Newgate. The Queen Dowager of Spain died. The French Thoulon-Fleet arrived at Breſt, being 47 Men-of-War. This Evening Admiral Bembo, with 13 Men-of-War, arrived in our Roads from before Dunkirk. Sir Will. Gregory, one of the Juſtices of the King's-Bench died, as did J. Matthews Eſq Clerk of the Privy Seal, in the 81 Year of his Age. A dreadful Fire happened near Wapping-stairs, which burnt the Gun-Tavern, with 14 or 15 Houſes, and a Ship at the Key. The Coroner's Inqueſt have ſate upon Horden the Comedian, and brought in their Verdict againſt all the Six who were in Company, but none of them are yet taken, except Captain Burges. Lord Polwarth is made High-Chancellor of Scotland. One Jane Smithers, alias Cox, who for Clieats exceeds the German Princeſs, commited to Bridewell. The Deputy-Lieutenant of Ireland died: Upon which a Council being ſummon'd, the Lord Chancellor was elected to be Ld. Juſtice, and Chief Governour of the Kingdom, till the King's Pleaſure ſhould be further known. The late K. James, with his Queen, and pretended Son, being at the Abby of La-Trapp, to pray for the Succeſs of the French King's Arms, a Fire broke out in the Hoſtelry belonging to the Convent, which made them leave their Prayers. The French ruine the Country in a moſt barbarous manner, and will ſcarce leave a Houſe ſtanding in the Chateline of Audenard. Three Thouſand French Deſerters have paſt Audenard in a little time. His Majeſty has made ſix Major-Generals, (viz) Lord Cutts, Brigadier Stewart. Brigadier Leviſon, Brigadier Earle, Colonel Collier, and Monſieur le Tongue: And 7 Brigadier, Generals, (viz.) Prince of Wirtenberg, Col. Cunningham, Col. Ingoldsby, Col. Fairfax, Col. Trelawny, Col. Maitland, and Col. Tiffin. The Lord Chancellor Porter was choſen by the Council, to be the next in Office upon the Death of the Lord Lieutenant in Ireland. Sir John Fenwick was taken with one Webber an Attorney in New-Rumney. Cap. Waugh was taken at Canterbury. About this time Monſieur Catinat burnt Gruiaſco, within three quarters of a League of Turin, becauſe he found 70 of his Souldiers there with their Hands and Feet cut off, occaſion'd by M. Catinat's ſeverity towards the Boors. The King of Poland died of an Apoplexy at his Pleaſure-houſe in Villa-Nova. About ſix in the Evening an Earthquake was felt at Falmouth, and in the adjacent places. Our Grand Fleet ſail'd out of Torbay to put the concerted Deſigns in Execution on the French Coaſt. Two Spaniſh Galleys took 25 French Veſſels laden with Meal and other Proviſions for Roſes. Sir Leonard Robinſon elected Chamberlain for London. His Majeſty was pleas'd to appoint Sir John Turton, One of the Barons of the Exchequer, to be One of the Juſtices of the Court of King's-Bench, in the room of Mr. Juſtice Gregory, lately Deceas'd. The Duke of Savoy and the French gave Hoſtages for the performance of the Truce they agree'd on for Thirty days, to commence on this Firſt inſtant. Duke of Powis Died at St. Germains. Sir George Berkley Bomb'd St. Martins in the Iſle of Rhé, Firing 2230 Bombs and Carcaſſes. From the Iſle of Rhè he went to Ollonne, and Fired there 1996 Bombs and Carcaſſes, which had all the effect that cou'd be expected. At the ſame time he Bomb'd Bell-Iſle; the Cardinals Hodick and Grey, Burned on theſe ſeveral Iſlands above 1500 Houſes, kill'd and brought away at leaſt 1300 Head of Black-Cattle and Horſes. and taken 20 Boats and ſmall Veſſels. His Majeſty was pleas'd to appoint the Right Honourable Sir Charles Porter Lord Chancellor of Ireland, Charles Earl of Montrath, and Henry Earl of Drogheda to be Lords Juſtices, and General Governours of the Kingdom of Ireland.
