         <editorialDecl>
            <p>EEBO-TCP is a partnership between the Universities of Michigan and Oxford and the publisher ProQuest to create accurately transcribed and encoded texts based on the image sets published by ProQuest via their Early English Books Online (EEBO) database (http://eebo.chadwyck.com). The general aim of EEBO-TCP is to encode one copy (usually the first edition) of every monographic English-language title published between 1473 and 1700 available in EEBO.</p>
            <p>EEBO-TCP aimed to produce large quantities of textual data within the usual project restraints of time and funding, and therefore chose to create diplomatic transcriptions (as opposed to critical editions) with light-touch, mainly structural encoding based on the Text Encoding Initiative (http://www.tei-c.org).</p>
            <p>The EEBO-TCP project was divided into two phases. The 25,363 texts created during Phase 1 of the project have been released into the public domain as of 1 January 2015. Anyone can now take and use these texts for their own purposes, but we respectfully request that due credit and attribution is given to their original source.</p>
            <p>Users should be aware of the process of creating the TCP texts, and therefore of any assumptions that can be made about the data.</p>
            <p>Text selection was based on the New Cambridge Bibliography of English Literature (NCBEL). If an author (or for an anonymous work, the title) appears in NCBEL, then their works are eligible for inclusion. Selection was intended to range over a wide variety of subject areas, to reflect the true nature of the print record of the period. In general, first editions of a works in English were prioritized, although there are a number of works in other languages, notably Latin and Welsh, included and sometimes a second or later edition of a work was chosen if there was a compelling reason to do so.</p>
            <p>Image sets were sent to external keying companies for transcription and basic encoding. Quality assurance was then carried out by editorial teams in Oxford and Michigan. 5% (or 5 pages, whichever is the greater) of each text was proofread for accuracy and those which did not meet QA standards were returned to the keyers to be redone. After proofreading, the encoding was enhanced and/or corrected and characters marked as illegible were corrected where possible up to a limit of 100 instances per text. Any remaining illegibles were encoded as &lt;gap&gt;s. Understanding these processes should make clear that, while the overall quality of TCP data is very good, some errors will remain and some readable characters will be marked as illegible. Users should bear in mind that in all likelihood such instances will never have been looked at by a TCP editor.</p>
            <p>The texts were encoded and linked to page images in accordance with level 4 of the TEI in Libraries guidelines.</p>
            <p>Copies of the texts have been issued variously as SGML (TCP schema; ASCII text with mnemonic sdata character entities); displayable XML (TCP schema; characters represented either as UTF-8 Unicode or text strings within braces); or lossless XML (TEI P5, characters represented either as UTF-8 Unicode or TEI g elements).</p>
            <p>Keying and markup guidelines are available at the <ref target="http://www.textcreationpartnership.org/docs/.">Text Creation Partnership web site</ref>.</p>

(1.) <hi>The Prophets do they live for ever?]</hi> Conſider two or three things.</p>
            <p n="1">1. The Prophets of God are ſubject to the ſame Law that others are. There is a Stature-Law that is not reverſed, and there are ſo few I think is never tranſgreſſed:— There have been ſome few excepti<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>ons; but it will not be repealed till Chriſt hath ſwal<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>lowed up Death in Victory. </gap>, <hi>it is decreed.</hi>) It is decreed to all, it is ena<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>cted, and the Prophets have no exemption. Yea, that Man Chriſt Jeſus the Mediator and great High Prieſt, He was under this Law: He was made under the Law: He was to die: And by one offering for ever perfected them that are dedicated to God. <hi>It is ap<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>pointed to all men once to die;</hi> and to die penally, by the force of that threatning, <hi>Gen.</hi> 2<g ref="char:punc">▪</g> 17. <hi>In the day thou eateſt thereof thou ſhalt ſurely die.</hi> Chriſt died Penally, <hi>He was made a curſe;</hi> and his dying ſo, hath delivered ſome, that they ſhall not die Penally. But to die Naturally, that continues to all; to the Pro<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>phets, and them that fear him, as well as others, <hi>Rom.</hi> 8.10. <hi>If Chriſt be in you, the body is dead becauſe of ſin, but the ſpirit is life becauſe of righteouſneſs.</hi> If Chriſt be in you, though there be that happy union, yet he lets the Body be arreſted by Death, the Body is dead: Believers Bodies, the Bodies of his Mini<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>ſters, of his Prophets are dead; that is, Obnoxious to Death. I think it hath reference to the ſecond verſe: <hi>The law of the ſpirit of life in Chriſt Jeſus hath made me free from the law of ſin and death.</hi> How from the law of ſin, he had ſhewed before; here he come to

The ſpirit (I think 'tis the ſoul) is life, and capable of living with God in a ſeparate ſtate, and ſhall be in the fruition of God; and the Body ſhall at length be joyned with it. And as a pledge of it this is added, <hi>The ſpirit is life becauſe of righteouſneſs.</hi> What God doth in ſanctifying of his own here, is a pledge to them that their whole man ſhall live with him hereafter.</p>

               <pb n="11" facs="tcp:30798:8"/>
But I will go off that, and give a little account of the ſecond, and ſo come to the Uſe.</p>
            <p n="2">(2.) <hi>Though the Prophets live not for ever, yet the Word of God lives.</hi> Do but conſider a little:</p>
            <p n="1">1. The Prophets of God uſe to come with their Menaces, the threatning part of God's Word; and though the threatning you think is always Condi<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>tional, and leaves ſpace for Repentance; (this made the Prophet <hi>Jonah</hi> refuſe to go on his Errand: <hi>I knew,</hi> ſaith he, <hi>that thou art a gracious God, and mer<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>ciful, ſlow to anger, and of great kindneſs, and wouldſt repent thee of the evil;</hi> and ſo I ſhould have my Re<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>putation ſtained: <hi>Go and preach to Niniveh, and ſay, Yet forty days and Niniveh ſhall be deſtroyed; and then God repent:</hi> They will ſay, There's a lying Prophet.) Yet let me tell you, when God denounceth his Judg<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>ments, ſometimes he puts his Oath to the Threaten<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>ing, ſwears to the matter, and then it is irrever<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>ſible. <hi>As I live, ſaith the Lord, my heart cannot be towards this people.</hi>
            </p>
            <p>And as the Miniſtry of the Prophets had a Mina<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>tory part, ſo truly the Goſpel hath Threatnings, moſt ſevere ones. <hi>Mark</hi> 16.16. <hi>He that believeth, and is haptized, ſhall be ſaved; and he that believeth not ſhall be damned.</hi> Words that came out of the gracious mouth of the Son of God. <hi>Hebr.</hi> 2.3. <hi>How ſhall we eſcape if we neglect ſo great Salvation?</hi> There's no eſcaping Damnation. The Word of God lives. The very Threatning lives. Though the prophets die, God will take care to make good his threatning; be ſure he will do it, when
<pb n="12" facs="tcp:30798:9"/>he ſwears in wrath we ſhall never enter into his reſt.</p>
            <p n="2">2. The Word of God abides too, as it compri<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>zeth the Promiſes, which are a declaration of God's Grace and good will towards men. This was part of the Prophets Office, to publiſh the Promiſe, <hi>Luk.</hi> 1.69. <hi>He hath raiſed up an Horn of Salvation for us, as he ſpake by the mouth of his holy Prophets ſince the world began, to perform the mercy promiſed to our Fa<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>thers, &amp;c.</hi> So the Apoſtle <hi>Peter,</hi> ſaith he, <hi>The ſpi<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>rit of God ſpake by the Prophets concerning Chriſt, his Sufferings, and the Glory that ſhould follow.</hi> So the Miniſters of the New Teſtament, O how they love to Preach the New Covenant, and all the Promiſes for the relief of diſtreſſed ſinners! It is the moſt pleaſing part of their work, 2 <hi>Cor.</hi> 1.20. <hi>For all the Promiſes of God in him</hi> (in Chriſt) <hi>are yea, and in him Amen, to the Glory of God by us.</hi> God glo<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>rifies himſelf by us; God glorifies his faithfulneſs in performing his Promiſes by our Miniſtry. The Pro<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>miſe lives; for God lives whoſe the Promiſe is: He cannot lye, nor cannot change. He ſhews by it the Immutability of his Counſel, that the heirs of Salvation may have ſtrong conſolation.</p>
            <p>God's Prophets and Miniſters they die; but the Word diſpenſed by them, that lives; it hath its fulfillment. Our work is to declare the whole counſel of God to you that concerns your Salvati<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>on; and God doth cauſe his Prophets to ſtand in his Covenant, and the ſecrets of God are with them. Saith the Apoſtle, <hi>Acts</hi> 20. <hi>I have not ſhun<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>ned to declare to you the whole counſel of God, and have kept back nothing that was profitable for you,
<pb n="13" facs="tcp:30798:9"/>Preaching Repentance towards God, and Faith towards the Lord Jeſus.</hi> — His Counſel ſhall ſtand. <hi>You ſhall ſee my face no more, ſaith he to them,</hi> verſe 38. But this whole Counſel of God, which I have de<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>clared, ſhall be fulfilled; and there is no Perſon, no Churches that do reject the Counſel of God, but it is againſt themſelves, <hi>i. e.</hi> to their own ruin, <hi>Luke</hi> 7.30.</p>
            <p>The Word of God lives; the Prophets dye, but the Word of God lives. The Word of God diſ<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>penſed by us, is as ſeed ſown, though it ſeem to dye under the Clods, yet it will live again; the Lord gives it a Body, or rather a Spirit. And ſo l Peter 1.23.— <hi>Being born again, not of corruptible ſeed, but of incorruptible; by the word of God which liveth and abideth for ever.</hi> In all Productions there is ſome Seed out of which the Creature is brought forth, ſo it is in the new Creature. — <hi>Born of the incorruptible ſeed, the word which we Preach to you;</hi> and this Word lives and abides for ever; and if it be turned into a vital Principle in your Souls, that will abide too; it will be the Seed of God that remains. And though in our ſowing we go forth with precious Seed, we wiſh it might alike proſper; but we do not always meet with good Ground; that which falls into good Ground, by the bleſſing of God brings forth Fruit, ſome more, and ſome leſs. The Word of God lives, the Prophets dye, the Miniſters of Chriſt dye; but their Word lives and will take place.</p>
