            <p>Users should be aware of the process of creating the TCP texts, and therefore of any assumptions that can be made about the data.</p>
            <p>Text selection was based on the New Cambridge Bibliography of English Literature (NCBEL). If an author (or for an anonymous work, the title) appears in NCBEL, then their works are eligible for inclusion. Selection was intended to range over a wide variety of subject areas, to reflect the true nature of the print record of the period. In general, first editions of a works in English were prioritized, although there are a number of works in other languages, notably Latin and Welsh, included and sometimes a second or later edition of a work was chosen if there was a compelling reason to do so.</p>
            <p>Image sets were sent to external keying companies for transcription and basic encoding. Quality assurance was then carried out by editorial teams in Oxford and Michigan. 5% (or 5 pages, whichever is the greater) of each text was proofread for accuracy and those which did not meet QA standards were returned to the keyers to be redone. After proofreading, the encoding was enhanced and/or corrected and characters marked as illegible were corrected where possible up to a limit of 100 instances per text. Any remaining illegibles were encoded as &lt;gap&gt;s. Understanding these processes should make clear that, while the overall quality of TCP data is very good, some errors will remain and some readable characters will be marked as illegible. Users should bear in mind that in all likelihood such instances will never have been looked at by a TCP editor.</p>
            <p>The texts were encoded and linked to page images in accordance with level 4 of the TEI in Libraries guidelines.</p>
            <p>Copies of the texts have been issued variously as SGML (TCP schema; ASCII text with mnemonic sdata character entities); displayable XML (TCP schema; characters represented either as UTF-8 Unicode or text strings within braces); or lossless XML (TEI P5, characters represented either as UTF-8 Unicode or TEI g elements).</p>

Not to be abuſed by the
Independents.</head>
            <p>
               <seg rend="decorInit">T</seg>HE following Diſcourſe ſhall
conſiſt of <hi>Four</hi> particulars.</p>
            <p>
               <hi>Firſt,</hi> The lawfulneſs of Com<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>municating
with our Churches by
the <hi>Confeſſions</hi> and <hi>Arguments</hi>
of the Congregational Divines.</p>
            <p>2. The ſame proved by demonstrating the <hi>Apo<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>ſtolical
Churches</hi> more vitiated than Ours,
from whom a Separation is made by the <hi>Inde<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>pendents;</hi>
and yet a Separation from thoſe
<hi>Primitive Churches,</hi> utterly diſcountenanced
by the Apoſtles.</p>
            <p>

3. The ſame Propoſition proved by demonſtrating
that we have not given them the like, or any
just Cauſe, as the Church of <hi>Rome</hi> gave them
and us. <hi>Which is the</hi> firſt <hi>particular to be
proved.</hi>
            </p>
            <p>
               <hi>Secondly,</hi> I ſhall ſhew the ſinfulneſs of erecting
<hi>Altar</hi> againſt <hi>Altar,</hi> of gathering <hi>Churches</hi> out of
<hi>Churches.</hi>
            </p>
            <p>
               <hi>Thirdly,</hi> That the <hi>Independents</hi> are averſe in
their Principles to <hi>Toleration</hi> as well as the <hi>Preſ<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>byterians,</hi>
and ſo equally obliged not to abuſe the
preſent gracious <hi>Indulgence.</hi>
            </p>
            <p>
               <hi>Fourthly,</hi> I ſhall ſhew, that by His <hi>Majeſties</hi>
late <hi>Declaration</hi> the Church of <hi>England</hi> is ſtill
eſtabliſhed as the <hi>Baſis,</hi> and the bare ſuſpenſion of the
<hi>poenal Laws,</hi> doth indeed take off the <hi>Obligation,</hi>
upon the account of <hi>wrath,</hi> that lay before upon <hi>Diſ<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>ſenters;</hi>
but does not cancel the Obligation of <hi>Con<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>ſcience,</hi>
by which the <hi>Independents,</hi> and all In<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>dulged
parties, are ſtill to avoid all Cauſleſs and
groundleſs <hi>Separations</hi> from this Beſt of <hi>Reformed</hi>
Churches.</p>
            <p>

Firſt, <hi>The Lawfulneſs of Communicating with our</hi>
Churches, <hi>by the Arguments and Conceſſions even
of the</hi> Independents <hi>themſelves.</hi> Our <hi>Parochial
Churches</hi> are owned to have the Eſſentials of
<hi>true Churches</hi> by all ſober Congregational men:
(For there is the <hi>pure Word</hi> of GOD Preached,
the <hi>true Sacraments</hi> Adminiſtred, and an impli<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>cite
<hi>Covenant</hi> between <hi>Paſtor</hi> and <hi>People</hi> in joyning
together.) All that is pleaded is <hi>Corruption</hi> and
<hi>Defect</hi> in the <hi>outward</hi> Exerciſe and Adminiſtra<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>tion
of <hi>Church Order,</hi> and <hi>Diſcipline.</hi> Now that it
is <hi>Lawful</hi> (ſuppoſing, but not granting this <hi>bar</hi>
lies againſt the <hi>Church</hi> of <hi>England)</hi> to joyn with
Churches ſo <hi>defective</hi> and <hi>corrupt,</hi> is not only
acknowledged, but fully proved by Reverend
Mr. <hi>Norton,</hi> of the <hi>Congregational way</hi> in his An<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>ſwer
to <hi>Apolſius</hi> (as Dr. <hi>Stilling fleet</hi> in his <hi>Irenicum</hi>
quotes it to the preſent purpoſe) which I deſire
the <hi>Brethren</hi> to conſider, whom it chiefly con<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>cerns,
and to lay ſeriouſly to their hearts: and,
without a reply to his Arguments, they cannot
juſtifie their <hi>Separation</hi> from us.</p>
            <p>

1. A <hi>Believer</hi> may Lawfully joyn in <hi>Commu<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>nion</hi>
with ſuch a <hi>Church,</hi> where he cannot enjoy
all the <hi>Ordinancies</hi> of GOD, as in the <hi>Jewiſh
Church,</hi> in our Saviour's time, which refuſed
the <hi>Goſpel</hi> of <hi>Christ,</hi> and the <hi>Baptiſme</hi> of <hi>John,</hi>
and yet our Saviour commands us to hear the
<hi>Scribes</hi> and <hi>Phariſees</hi> (ſitting in <hi>Moſes</hi>'s Chair;)
which <hi>hearing</hi> implies <hi>Conjunctionem Eccleſiae Ju<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>daicae,
A joyning with the</hi> Jewiſh <hi>Church.</hi> So
with <hi>Churches</hi> rejecting an <hi>Article</hi> of <hi>Faith;</hi> as
the <hi>Church</hi> of <hi>Corinth,</hi> the Doctrine of the <hi>Re<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>ſurrection;</hi>
the <hi>Churches</hi> of <hi>Galatia</hi> rejecting the
Doctrine of <hi>Juſtification by Faith:</hi> yet the <hi>Apo<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>ſtle</hi>
no where requires, on that account, a <hi>Sepa<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>ration</hi>
from them.</p>
            <p>2. A <hi>Believer</hi> may Lawfully joyn in <hi>Commu<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>nion</hi>
with ſuch a <hi>Church,</hi> in which ſome <hi>Corrup<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>tion</hi>
is tolerated in the Worſhip of GOD,
without Reformation; as the Offering upon
<hi>High places,</hi> from <hi>Solomon</hi> to <hi>Hezekiah,</hi> in the
<hi>Church</hi> of <hi>Judah;</hi> the obſervation of <hi>Circum<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>ciſion</hi>
and the Law <hi>Ceremonial</hi> in the <hi>Churches</hi> of
<hi>Galatia.</hi>
            </p>
            <p>

3. A <hi>Believer</hi> may Lawfully joyn himſelf
in <hi>Communion</hi> with ſuch a <hi>Church,</hi> in which
ſuch are admitted to <hi>Sacraments</hi> who give no e<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>vident
ſigns of <hi>Grace,</hi> but ſeem to be <hi>Lovers
of the World;</hi> this he proves, becauſe it is every
mans Duty to <hi>Examine</hi> himſelf, and anothers <hi>ſin</hi>
hurts not me, and ſo is no argument againſt
<hi>my</hi> Duty. And beſides, by mens coming <hi>un<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>worthily,
Non polluitur Communio, licet minuitur
Conſolatio, The Communion is not defiled, though
the comfort of it be diminiſhed:</hi> This he proves
alſo from the <hi>Church</hi> of <hi>Corinth,</hi> amongſt whom
were many ſcandalous that had not <hi>Repented,</hi>
2 <hi>Cor. 12. 20, &amp;c.</hi> and in the <hi>Church</hi> of the <hi>Jews,</hi>
which lay under great <hi>Corruptions</hi> when <hi>Chriſt</hi>
and His <hi>Apoſtles</hi> communicated with it.</p>
            <p>4. Although a <hi>Believer</hi> joyns with ſuch a
<hi>Church,</hi> he is not therefore bound with the <hi>Guilt,</hi>
nor defiled with the <hi>pollutions</hi> of others that
Communicate. It is his Duty incumbent, and
in doing his Duty, he contracts no <hi>Guilt</hi> upon
himſelf.</p>
            <p>

5. A <hi>Believer</hi> which hath joyned himſelf
to ſuch a <hi>Church</hi> is not bound to <hi>withdraw</hi> and
<hi>ſeperate</hi> under pain of <hi>Guilt</hi> if he does it not:
for to be <hi>lawful</hi> to joyn, and <hi>unlawful</hi> to conti<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>nue
the Communion implies a contradiction;
for the <hi>firſt</hi> ſpeaks it to be a <hi>Church,</hi> and the <hi>ſecond</hi>
to be no <hi>Church;</hi> and ſo it is not Lawful to <hi>ſe<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>perate</hi>
from a <hi>Church true,</hi> as to Eſſentials (and
ſuch the <hi>Independents</hi> own in their <hi>Apologetical
Narration,</hi> our <hi>Parochial Churches)</hi> though guilty
of <hi>Corruptions;</hi> for the ground of <hi>Communicating</hi>
is its being a <hi>Church,</hi> not a <hi>corrupt</hi> or <hi>defective
Church.</hi> And that men are not guilty by <hi>par<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>taking</hi>
with thoſe that are guilty of <hi>Corruptions</hi>
in a <hi>Church,</hi> appears from the <hi>Church</hi> of the
<hi>Jews</hi> in the caſe of <hi>Ely</hi>'s Sons, and the <hi>Chriſtian
Churches</hi> of <hi>Aſia</hi> and <hi>Corinth;</hi> where we read of
many <hi>Corruptions</hi> by S. <hi>Paul</hi> reproved, but no
Mandate to <hi>ſeparate,</hi> which had certainly by the
<hi>Holy Ghoſt</hi> been given, and S. <hi>Paul</hi> would not
have omitted, had it been a ſin to communicate
while thoſe <hi>Corruptions</hi> were in the <hi>Churches</hi> of
<hi>Aſia</hi> and <hi>Corinth.</hi> Thus far their own Reverend

               <hi>Norton.</hi> Now I deſire theſe <hi>Congregational Lea<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>ders,</hi>
who gather Churches out of <hi>our Churches,</hi>
to reply to this <hi>Learned Divine</hi> of their own
perſwaſion, or to conſider what Anſwer is to be
given to the <hi>ſearcher of all Hearts,</hi> for reſiſting
that light of <hi>Conviction</hi> that ſhines in upon their
Conſciences.</p>
            <p>Again, not granting but ſuppoſing only;
that in this <hi>Church</hi> from which theſe <hi>ſeparate,
Church-Diſcipline</hi> were neglected, <hi>Worſhip</hi> de<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>filed,
<hi>Manners</hi> corrupted, or <hi>Tyranny</hi> exerciſed:
ſuppoſe we grant all this, which we need not,
this will not juſtifie a <hi>Separation</hi> from the <hi>Church</hi>
of <hi>England.</hi> My reaſon is, becauſe there were
greater <hi>Corruptions</hi> in <hi>Doctrine, Diſcipline,</hi> and <hi>Wor<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>ſhip</hi>
(and no <hi>Separations</hi> countenanced by the
<hi>Apoſtles)</hi> in the <hi>firſt</hi> Apoſtolical <hi>Chriſtian Churches,</hi>
then in Ours, or any other <hi>Reformed</hi> Churches,
from whom a <hi>Separation</hi> is made in theſe times.
As for inſtance; to begin with <hi>Doctrine;</hi> In
what <hi>Church</hi> of ours is the <hi>Reſurrection</hi> of the
<hi>Dead</hi> denyed, an Article of that importance
that all our <hi>Chriſtianity,</hi> in effect, depends upon it?

It was denyed by many in the <hi>Church</hi> of <hi>Corinth.</hi>
In what <hi>Churches</hi> of ours is the <hi>Doctrine</hi> of <hi>Ju<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>ſtification
by the Law,</hi> or any <hi>Doctrine</hi> ſo deſtru<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>ctive
of the <hi>Merit of Christ,</hi> generally main<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>tained,
as in the <hi>Galatian</hi> Churches? Again,
for <hi>Worſhip;</hi> Do <hi>ours</hi> partake of the <hi>Lord's Table</hi>
and the <hi>Table of Devils,</hi> as among the <hi>Corinthi<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>ans?</hi>
Are our <hi>Eccleſiastical Aſſemblies</hi> ſo con<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>fuſed,
that whoſoever comes in muſt preſently
take us for Mad? Do ours come to the Com<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>munion
<hi>drunk,</hi> as at <hi>Corinth?</hi> Then for <hi>Man<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>ners,</hi>
and <hi>Life;</hi> We acknowledge our ſelves
<hi>heynous Offendors</hi> (which, I ſuppoſe, thoſe that
call themſelves the <hi>Saints,</hi> and <hi>ſeparate</hi> from us
<hi>Publicans)</hi> do (unleſs frantick) confeſs <hi>true</hi> of
themſelves: But what then? have we worſe
than <hi>Inceſt, Fornication, Covetouſneſs, Malice, Con<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>tentions</hi>
unrepented of, as is the Church of <hi>Co<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>rinth?</hi>
Or, <hi>biting</hi> and <hi>devouring</hi> one another,
permitters of <hi>Idolaters,</hi> boaſters of <hi>Gifts,</hi> as in
the Church of <hi>Galatia?</hi> As touching <hi>neglect of
Diſcipline;</hi> Firſt in the <hi>Apoſtles</hi> own company,
the Miniſters that ſhould <hi>exerciſe Diſcipline,</hi> they

all <hi>ſought there own,</hi> and none <hi>the things of J<gap reason="illegible" extent="1 letter">

as we ſaw before in the Church of
<hi>Corinth;</hi> and ſhould have been ſo ſtill, had not
the <hi>Apoſtle</hi> been Living, and exciting them to
their Duty.</p>
            <p>Laſtly, concerning <hi>Tyranny;</hi> Ye ſee what
<hi>Oppreſſion</hi> the <hi>falſe Apoſtles</hi> uſed, 2 <hi>Cor.</hi> 11. 20.
<hi>Ye ſuffer,</hi> ſaith the Apoſtle, <hi>if a man take of you,
if a man bring you into bondage, if a man devour
you, if a man exalt himſelf,</hi> &amp;c. by which words
he toucheth the <hi>Tyranny,</hi> though out of malice
againſt the <hi>Apoſtle,</hi> willingly ſubmitted to, by
the Church of <hi>Corinth:</hi> and we know that <hi>Dyo<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>trephes</hi>
exerciſed his Government with ſuch <hi>In<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>ſolency,</hi>
that he caſt out whom he would, ad<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>mitted
whom he would, oppoſed S. <hi>John</hi> him<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>ſelf;
yet no news of <hi>Separation.</hi>
            </p>
            <p>Now let theſe men conſider, that <hi>ſeparate</hi>
from us, the <hi>Apoſtolical</hi> Church was a <hi>Virgin</hi>
newly eſpouſed to <hi>Chriſt,</hi> in the midſt of the
<hi>Heathen,</hi> under the Rod of <hi>Perſecution,</hi> the great
<hi>Apostle</hi> then living, and yet <hi>vitiated</hi> more then

the Churches that theſe <hi>depart</hi> from; and yet
the then <hi>Separatiſts</hi> branded with the Characters
of <hi>Schiſme</hi> and <hi>Sedition</hi> by the Bleſſed <hi>Apoſtles.</hi>
And here I deſire the men of this way ſeriouſly
to conſider, that <hi>Separation</hi> being diſcounte<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>nanced,
from Churches more <hi>vitiated</hi> than ours,
by the Holy <hi>Apoſtles;</hi> how theſe men, owning
our Parochial Churches <hi>true</hi> as to <hi>Eſſentials,</hi> can
ever juſtifie their <hi>Separation</hi> from us? It would
certainly be duly weighed by ſuch as deſire to
appear <hi>tender Conſciences,</hi> and ſo capable of a
<hi>right</hi> in the preſent <hi>gracious Indulgence.</hi> That they
do ſo acknowledge our <hi>Parochial Churches,</hi> their
<hi>Apologetical Narration</hi> declares ſufficiently in
theſe following words; <hi>We have alwaies profeſt
(and that in theſe times, wherein the Churches of</hi>
England <hi>were moſt, either actually overſpread with</hi>
defilements, <hi>or in the greateſt danger thereof) that we
both did, and would hold</hi> Communion <hi>with them, as</hi>
true Churches <hi>of Christ;</hi> and that our <hi>Parochial
Churches</hi> were the very <hi>Body</hi> of <hi>Chriſt:</hi> which is in
effect to <hi>approve</hi> and <hi>forſake</hi> at the ſame time, and
gives occaſion, too great, of applying a Sentence

in S. <hi>Austin</hi> againſt <hi>Parmenian</hi> (Lib. 1. cap. 8.
againſt theſe Diſſenters:) <hi>Et adverſum nos lo<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>quuntur,
&amp; nobiſcum loquuntur, &amp; cum eos
obmuteſcere compellat veritas, ſilere non permit<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>tit
iniquitas: They ſpeak againſt us, and they
ſpeak for us; and when</hi> Truth <hi>conſtrains them ſi<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>lence,
their</hi> Iniquity <hi>will not let them hold their
peace.</hi>
            </p>
            <p>There are <hi>three</hi> things that I would humbly
offer to all ſober men of the <hi>Congregational per<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>ſwaſion;</hi>
and I beſeech them to conſider them
<hi>ſeriouſly,</hi> as from one that equally wiſheth their
<hi>Salvation</hi> with his own.</p>
            <p>1. <hi>That they would cautiouſly diſtinguiſh
between</hi> corruptions in Doctrine, <hi>and</hi> corruptions
in the practice of a Church.</p>
            <p>2. That they would Conſcientiouſly diſtin<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>guiſh
between <hi>corruptions,</hi> whether in <hi>Doctrine</hi> or
<hi>Practice,</hi> profeſt and avowed by a <hi>Church,</hi> and
required as the abſolute conditions of <hi>Commu<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>nion</hi>
from all its members; and <hi>corruptions</hi> only
crept in and meerly tolerated in a Church, and
not any way required as the conditions of</p>

            <p>Again, We of the <hi>Church</hi> of <hi>England</hi> have
not given them the like, or any juſt cauſe of
<hi>Separating,</hi> as the <hi>Church</hi> of <hi>Rome</hi> gave them
and us: For where do we urge any Doctrines
as Articles of <hi>Faith,</hi> which we offer not to
a tryal by Scripture, and the Four firſt <hi>General
Councils,</hi> which all Chriſtians reverence (and
were Anciently honoured next to the <hi>Four
Goſpels:)</hi> and if the <hi>Church</hi> ſhould teach any
other Propoſitions, ſhe proteſts againſt their
being Articles of <hi>Faith</hi> and of <hi>Neceſſity</hi> to Sal<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>vation,
and for this reaſon impoſeth not Her

<hi>England</hi> cenſure other Churches for their dif<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>ferent
<hi>Confeſſions,</hi> but allows them the liberty
ſhe her ſelf takes, to eſtabliſh more or leſs con<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>ditions
of <hi>Communion,</hi> as the <hi>Governours</hi> of the
Church ſhall deem moſt expedient for <hi>
                  <g ref="char:V">Ʋ</g>nity</hi>
and <hi>Peace.</hi> She only requires of ſuch as are
admitted to any <hi>Office</hi> or <hi>Employment</hi> in the
Church, to ſubſcribe to her <hi>Articles</hi> as certain
<hi>Theological Verityes</hi> not repugnant to <hi>GOD</hi>'s
<hi>Word,</hi> particularly culled out and ſelected to
be taught, and maintained within her <hi>Commu<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>nion,</hi>
as highly conducive to the preſervation
of <hi>Truth,</hi> and prevention of <hi>Schiſme.</hi> And for
this reaſon She paſſes no other cenſure upon
the Impugners of her <hi>Articles,</hi> then againſt the
Impugners of Her <hi>Government, Liturgy,</hi> and
<hi>Rites;</hi> becauſe all intended by her for the ſame
end, <hi>The avoiding of all Diſorders, and Confuſions.</hi>
But as for the <hi>abſolute Articles</hi> of the Church of
<hi>England,</hi> they were not of Her own Inventing,
but ſuch as She found eſtabliſhed in the beſt
Ages of the Church, neareſt the Primitive and

               <hi>Apostolical ſimplicity:</hi> Here She fixeth the
bounds of Her <hi>Faith,</hi> to prevent the danger
of endleſs <hi>Additions,</hi> and <hi>Innovations.</hi> And
becauſe in ſmaller matters ſomewhat may eſcape
the greateſt caution and <hi>prudence,</hi> She hath
reſerved <hi>Just power</hi> to her ſelf to reform what is
really amiſs, and finds ſo abuſed, that the uſe
of them cannot ſtand with <hi>Piety</hi> and <hi>Holineſs;</hi>
allowing the ſame Liberty to all her <hi>Sister
Churches,</hi> and all <hi>Church Governours</hi> within the
ſphere of their reſpective Juriſdictions. This
is the true ſtate of the <hi>Reformation</hi> of this
Church, as hath been apparently evidenced
by her <hi>Regular Sons</hi> againſt all Oppoſers.</p>
            <p>Now let the <hi>Independents</hi> conſider, whether
this be not (though a brief) yet a True
account of the <hi>Moderation</hi> and <hi>Prudence</hi> of this
Church; and then let them reflect at the ſame
time upon the <hi>ſecond</hi> eſpecially, of the <hi>Three</hi>
aforeſaid <hi>Propoſitions:</hi> and upon the whole
examine their Tender <hi>Conſciences,</hi> whether it
does not Juſtifie our <hi>Separation</hi> from the <hi>Ro<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>maniſts,</hi>
and at the ſame time prove them <hi>guilty</hi>

by departing from us. We both agree, that
<hi>where any Church is guilty of Corruptions in Do<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>ctrine
and practice,</hi> which it owns and requires
as abſolute conditions of Her Communion,
<hi>there to Separate is no</hi> Schiſme, <hi>but Lawful and
Convenient.</hi> Let them make the Church of <hi>Eng<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>land</hi>
appear thus <hi>guilty</hi> they are acquitted: If
they cannot <hi>prove</hi> it as they have not done as
yet (and doubtleſs they have <hi>Zeal</hi> enough to ſet
them forward, if it could be demonſtrated)
what hinders their Return to the <hi>Church</hi> of
<hi>England,</hi> unleſs the Conſcience, which they
call <hi>Tender,</hi> be ſullen and obſtinate? Not to
prove any thing that <hi>juſtifies</hi> a <hi>Separation</hi> againſt
the <hi>Church</hi> which they forſake, and yet con<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>tinue
to keep up their <hi>Altars</hi> againſt it, is not
ſo much allyed to <hi>tenderneſs of Conſcience,</hi> as to
<hi>hardneſs of Heart,</hi> uncapable of being reclaimed
by the greateſt and moſt generous <hi>condeſcenſions</hi>
in the World.</p>
            <p>So much of the <hi>Firſt</hi> particular, <hi>The Law<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>fulneſs
of Communicating with our</hi> Parochial
Churches, from the Arguments and <hi>Conceſſions</hi>

of the <hi>Independents</hi> themſelves; from the <hi>Pri<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>mitive</hi>
Apoſtolical Churches more <hi>vitiated</hi> than
Ours, and yet all manner of <hi>Separation</hi> diſ<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>countenanced
by the <hi>Apoſtles,</hi> and we not
having given the <hi>Independents</hi> any juſt cauſe
as the Church of <hi>Rome</hi> gave them and us.
That is the <hi>first Propoſition</hi> I engaged to de<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>fend,
<hi>The Lawfulneſs of communicating with our
Churches.</hi>
            </p>
            <p>
               <hi>Secondly,</hi> I am to ſhew the <hi>ſinfulneſs and
danger of erecting Altar againſt Altar, and ga<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>thering
Churches out of our Churches:</hi> The Sin is
the ſin of <hi>Schiſme,</hi> ſeverely branded by An<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>cient
<hi>Fathers</hi> and <hi>Orthodox</hi> Councils (as
well as in the <hi>Apostolical</hi> Writings) as the
heighth of <hi>Pride</hi> and <hi>Wickedneſs.</hi> That the
<hi>Independents</hi> are guilty of this <hi>Sin</hi> is clearly de<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>ducible
from what I have ſaid already; <hi>From
their own</hi> Arguments, <hi>and</hi> Conceſſions; <hi>from
the Instances of the</hi> Apoſtolical <hi>and</hi> Primitive
Churches, <hi>more</hi> vitiated <hi>than Ours, yet</hi> Sepa<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>ration
<hi>diſcountenanced by the</hi> Apoſtles; <hi>and by
a</hi> compariſon <hi>between our</hi> withdrawing <hi>from</hi>

Rome, <hi>and their</hi> Separation <hi>from us.</hi> Theſe
things already proved, ſpeaks them <hi>Cauſleſly</hi>
to <hi>Separate</hi> from us; and that <hi>cauſleſs Separa<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>tion</hi>
ſpeaks them <hi>Schiſmaticks.</hi> They themſelves
allow our Parochial Churches <hi>True,</hi> as to <hi>Eſ<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>ſentials;</hi>
and, what if we ſuppoſe <hi>spots</hi> and
<hi>pollutions,</hi> as to the <hi>outward</hi> Adminiſtration of
<hi>Order</hi> and <hi>Diſcipline;</hi> this, if we ſhould grant
them, onely infers a lawful <hi>deſire</hi> and <hi>endeavour</hi>
of <hi>Reformation,</hi> but it warrants no <hi>Schiſmati<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>cal
Separation;</hi> for no <hi>Corruptions</hi> in a Church
can give <hi>occaſion,</hi> or <hi>allowance</hi> of going out of
it, but ſuch as ſtrike at the Foundation of
<hi>Chriſtian Doctrine</hi> and <hi>Worſhip;</hi> which, ſetting
<hi>Calumny</hi> and <hi>railing</hi> aſide (which we are not
obliged to take for <hi>Reaſon</hi> and <hi>Argument)</hi> they
never yet attempted to prove againſt the
Church of <hi>England,</hi> ſo far they are inexcu<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>ſable
before <hi>GOD,</hi> and ſo far from appearing
Men of <hi>tender</hi> Conſciences to the <hi>World.</hi>
            </p>
            <p>Where are thoſe <hi>Corruptions</hi> in <hi>Doctrine</hi> or
<hi>Practice,</hi> which the Church of <hi>England</hi> doth
Impoſe upon her <hi>Members,</hi> as the abſolute <hi>Con<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>ditions</hi>

of Her Communion. Let them lay
aſide <hi>Wrath</hi> and <hi>Darkneſs,</hi> and give us a preg<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>nant
Demonſtration; or like Men of Can<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>dour
and Ingenuity plead <hi>Guilty,</hi> and <hi>Return.</hi>
Let them in ſhort prove theſe <hi>two</hi> things:
1. That our Epiſcopal <hi>Ordination</hi> and <hi>Juriſ<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>diction,</hi>
Our <hi>mixt</hi> Communion, Our Rites of
<hi>Order</hi> impoſed, not out of any <hi>Neceſſity,</hi> but
<hi>
                  <g ref="char:V">Ʋ</g>niformity</hi> and <hi>Peace,</hi> and ſome other things
by them inveighed againſt, to be indeed <hi>Super<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>ſtitious,</hi>
and (as they call them). <hi>Antichriſtian
Abominations.</hi> When that difficult Task is o<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>ver
(if it can be ever accompliſhed) let
them prove that we urge <hi>Diſputable</hi> things, or
<hi>known Errours</hi> with ſuch ſeverity, as the <hi>Church</hi>
of <hi>Rome</hi> does <hi>Purgatory, Indulgences, Super<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>erogation,</hi>
and other notorious <hi>palbable Errours;</hi>
for which, juſtly condemned by the <hi>Reformed
Churches.</hi> The very Cock of the Congregation
is here nonpluſt (the moſt daring of all their
<hi>
                  <g ref="char:V">Ʋ</g>ndertakers)</hi> unleſs you will take <hi>Noiſe,</hi>
and <hi>Clamour,</hi> and <hi>Confidence</hi> for <hi>Demonſtra<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>tions.</hi>
            </p>
            <p>

               <hi>Thirdly, The</hi> Independents <hi>are equally Ene<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>mies
to</hi> Toleration <hi>with the</hi> Preſbyterians; <hi>and
from the ſame very</hi> Principles, <hi>and by conſequence
equally obliged not to uſe</hi> (however not to abuſe)
<hi>the Gracious</hi> Indulgence. Nothing in Con<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>junction
with, or addition to, what is pre<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>ſcribed
in the <hi>Word</hi> of GOD (as to <hi>Worſhip,</hi>
and <hi>Government)</hi> is to be admitted or Tole<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>rated.
Upon this <hi>Principle</hi> the <hi>Independents</hi> in
particular (as well as <hi>Non-conformiſts</hi> in gene<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>ral,)
for ſo their greateſt and moſt forward
<hi>Champion</hi> tells us, They do, and will adhere to,
and ſtand upon as to the Differences, between
them and us. The plain meaning of which,
applyed to the Church of <hi>England,</hi> is briefly
this, That the <hi>Independent</hi> way of Worſhip,
and Government, is only preſcribed in the
<hi>Word</hi> of GOD; and Ours not, but repugnant:
And by this <hi>Principle</hi> they exclude as well their
<hi>Brethren</hi> that lent them the <hi>Principle,</hi> as well as
the <hi>Inferiour Sectariſts,</hi> and are at <hi>defiance</hi> with
them, as well as the <hi>Church</hi> of <hi>England;</hi> for
<hi>Independency</hi> being only preſcribed in the Word

by this Principle. if they will adhere to it,
no other way can be Indulged or admitted.
With theſe Men (as well as the <hi>Diſciplinarians)</hi>
there is but <hi>One</hi> only <hi>true way</hi> of Worſhip and
Government preſcribed in the <hi>Word.</hi> Nothing,
<hi>ſecondly,</hi> that is <hi>unlawful</hi> may be Tolerated by
the <hi>Civil Magiſtrate;</hi> and, nothing is <hi>lawful</hi>
but what is preſcribed in the <hi>Word</hi> (and you
may be confident, that is the <hi>Independent</hi> way
of <hi>Worſhip</hi> and <hi>Government.)</hi> Theſe <hi>three</hi>
things reſolved, whence ſhould <hi>Toleration</hi> pro<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>ceed,
or an <hi>Indulgence</hi> be expected from the
<hi>Independents</hi> to differing perſwaſions, unleſs he
playes <hi>fast</hi> and <hi>looſe,</hi> and as he pleaſeth, <hi>owns</hi>
and <hi>renounceth</hi> the <hi>Jus divinum</hi> of <hi>Independency</hi>
in the ſame <hi>Oracles.</hi>
            </p>
            <p>Every <hi>Sect</hi> (the <hi>Independent</hi> eſpecially)
allows no Worſhip, but their <hi>own way</hi> eſta<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>bliſhed
in the <hi>Word.</hi> This is not only pleaded
againſt the <hi>Church</hi> of <hi>England,</hi> but every <hi>Fa<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>ction</hi>
bandyes againſt every <hi>Faction</hi> for the <hi>Di<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>vine</hi>
Right. The <hi>Presbyterian</hi> Diſcipline is the
only Scepter of <hi>JES<g ref="char:V">Ʋ</g>S CHRIST</hi> for all

               <hi>Churches Government</hi> to the End of the World:
He can neither Indulge himſelf, nor accept
an <hi>Indulgence</hi> where other Parties are not ex<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>cluded.
The <hi>Independent</hi> allows only his <hi>own
Way</hi> of Worſhip, and excludes all <hi>Diſſenters</hi>
from Worſhipping GOD aright; and from
the <hi>beauty</hi> and <hi>purity</hi> of <hi>Goſpel Ordinances;</hi> which
is a Principle Sir John <hi>Presbyter</hi> lent him: And
how can an <hi>Indulgence</hi> hence proceed?</p>
            <p>By this Principle the <hi>Presbyterian</hi> firſt aſ<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>ſaulted
the <hi>Church</hi> of <hi>England.</hi> By the ſame
Principle the <hi>Congregational Hector</hi> takes Sir
<hi>John</hi> to task, and beats him out of the field:
By the ſame the <hi>Anabaptiſt</hi> attempted the <hi>In<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>dependent;</hi>
and all the under-<hi>Sects</hi> the <hi>Anabap<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>tists:</hi>
And ſo if they had crumbled into a
<hi>thouſand ſub-diviſions,</hi> ſtill as every <hi>Sect</hi> gathers
ſtrength enough, he perſecutes all <hi>Oppoſers.</hi>
And, How ſhould the <hi>Independent</hi> be more <hi>mer<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>ciful</hi>
than the <hi>Presbyterian,</hi> or any other Sect,
whoſe Enmity to <hi>Toleration</hi> doth equally ariſe
from the ſame common Principle of the <hi>Divine</hi>
Right, only of their <hi>own way</hi> of Worſhip and

Government, from which all the <hi>Sects</hi> are ex<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>cluded,
as well as the <hi>Church</hi> of <hi>England?</hi>
There is <hi>One</hi> only <hi>way</hi> of <hi>Worſhipping</hi> GOD
aright, and that <hi>way</hi> is the <hi>Independent way</hi> of
Worſhip. <hi>Where is</hi> Toleration <hi>then?</hi> It is
excluded. <hi>By what Law?</hi> By <hi>Divine</hi> Right:
And ſo <hi>Every plant that my Father hath not
planted must be rooted out;</hi> and ſo only <hi>Independency</hi>
is to be <hi>Tolerated,</hi> unleſs <hi>Kings</hi> and <hi>Princes</hi> who
Rule for GOD, may Indulge men in an Open
<hi>violation</hi> of the <hi>Law</hi> of <hi>GOD?</hi> And if you
look a little backwards, it may admit a Diſ<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>pute,
Whether <hi>the Scepter of</hi> JESUS CHRIST
<hi>were more an</hi> Iron Rod <hi>under the</hi> Kirk, <hi>or the
tender hearted</hi> Tryers? It may indeed ſome<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>times
conſiſt with <hi>Carnal prudence</hi> (ſuppoſing
the <hi>Independents</hi> to have <hi>power</hi> in their hands)
to connive at, and Indulge the Leſſer <hi>Facti<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>ons,</hi>
the better to hold out the Flag of <hi>Defiance</hi>
againſt the <hi>Royaliſts,</hi> and the <hi>Presbyterians</hi> their
moſt conſiderable Competitors. Or they
may (as the <hi>
                  <g ref="char:V">Ʋ</g>ſurpers</hi> tender-Conſcien'd Army
once did) offer the taking away even the <hi>Poenal

Laws</hi> from the very <hi>Papiſts,</hi> to <hi>collogue</hi> with
<hi>Forraign Princes,</hi> and ſo have the greater <hi>ſecu<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>rity</hi>
in their Villanous Deſigns againſt the
<hi>King,</hi> and the <hi>Church;</hi> but this is a <hi>State Juggle</hi>
for the advancement of the <hi>Good Old Cauſe:</hi>
But then as ſoon as the <hi>fear</hi> is over from a<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>broad,
then they ſpared nothing that <hi>Sacri<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>ledge</hi>
could devour.</p>
            <p>And now, Can any Man, that looks back
upon <hi>Independent mercy</hi> and <hi>forbearance,</hi> believe
that Men of ſuch <hi>Principles</hi> and <hi>practices</hi> (who
are now pleaſed that <hi>Epiſcopacy</hi> is eſtabliſhed,
and <hi>Poenal Laws</hi> removed from <hi>Papists,</hi> only
becauſe <hi>Indulged</hi> themſelves) would Tolerate
either <hi>Popery</hi> or <hi>Epiſcopacy</hi> if they had <hi>Power</hi>
in their hands, and not rather Lord it with
the Inſolence of <hi>
                  <g ref="char:V">Ʋ</g>ſurpers? Credat Judaeus
Apella, non Ego.</hi>
            </p>
            <p>So that as a late <hi>Treatiſe</hi> demonſtrates, the
<hi>Presbyterian</hi> hath no cauſe of joy, becauſe <hi>others</hi>
are Indulged as well as himſelf; whereas his
<hi>Doctors, Elders,</hi> and <hi>Deacons</hi> are the perpetual
<hi>Scepter of CHRIST</hi> to the end of the World

for <hi>all Churches</hi> Government; and therefore,
<hi>Down with the</hi> Colours <hi>of the Dragon; advance
the</hi> Standard <hi>of CHRIST.</hi>
            </p>
            <p>The <hi>Independents</hi> have no cauſe of Joy, be<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>cauſe
the <hi>Church</hi> of <hi>England,</hi> and the <hi>Presbyte<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>rian</hi>
Limb too, of the <hi>Antichristian Leviathan,</hi>
are included, as well as the reſt of the Parties
among us: His <hi>Way</hi> being only laid down in
the WORD, and <hi>all</hi> others repugnant to the
<hi>Holy Scriptures.</hi> Yet they take the advantage,
both out of a <hi>hatred</hi> to a <hi>third</hi> Party, the <hi>Church
of England,</hi> and the next thing is to fight one
with another for the <hi>Government:</hi> and then the
only <hi>Scepter</hi> of <hi>Chriſt</hi> is the <hi>Conquerours</hi> worſhip;
the longeſt <hi>Sword</hi> is the <hi>Divine Right;</hi> the <hi>Pike</hi>
and <hi>Gun</hi> declare the <hi>Cauſe</hi> of GOD; and in<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>fallible
<hi>Artillery</hi> decides all the <hi>Controverſies</hi> re<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>lating
to the <hi>Goſpel Truth.</hi> And thus the <hi>Preſ<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>byterian</hi>
(who thought to have <hi>erected</hi> his <hi>Diſ<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>cipline</hi>
upon the ſad Eclipſe of the <hi>Church</hi> of
<hi>England)</hi> was powerfully <hi>baffled</hi> and <hi>confuted,</hi>
by ſuch <hi>Arguments</hi> as the <hi>Independent</hi> Man of
War carryed in his <hi>Snapſack.</hi>

Do not the <hi>Independents,</hi> when moſt cool and
moderate, look upon all other <hi>Churches</hi> and
<hi>People,</hi> as <hi>all</hi> Revolters from the <hi>purity</hi> and
<hi>beauty</hi> of <hi>Goſpel</hi>-Ordinances, introducers of
<hi>Will-Worſhip</hi> and <hi>Superſtition,</hi> inſtead of <hi>Diſciples</hi>
of the <hi>Lord JES<g ref="char:V">Ʋ</g>S;</hi> not allowing any <hi>Diſ<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>ſenters</hi>
the leaſt ſhare or degree of <hi>Wiſdom,</hi> or
<hi>Godlineſs?</hi> And men of ſuch <hi>Principles</hi> of <hi>this</hi>
forehead and complexion, muſt needs carry
<hi>tender bowels</hi> to Men of differing <hi>Perſwaſions.</hi>
Certainly, unleſs where the rules and maximes
of <hi>carnal Policy</hi> interpoſe and plead for <hi>mercy</hi>
to <hi>Diſſenters,</hi> their <hi>Clemency</hi> is the ſame with the
<hi>Presbyterian,</hi> who firſt lent him the Principle,
of <hi>not admitting any thing not expreſly delivered in
the Sacred Scriptures:</hi> by which <hi>Principle</hi> they
are engaged in a War with one another, as well
as againſt their common <hi>Antagonists.</hi> So that
the <hi>Tables</hi> are now turned. It is not the Que<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>ſtion,
<hi>whether all Partyes may be Tolerated;</hi> but,
<hi>whether</hi> Independents <hi>only:</hi> for there is but <hi>One
true way</hi> of Worſhip, and that is <hi>Theirs.</hi> Theirs
<hi>only</hi> hath the <hi>Divinum Jus,</hi> and <hi>Princes</hi> may not

               <hi>Indulge</hi> Men in an <hi>open</hi> violation of <hi>Scripture</hi>
Precepts, and Directions. And ſo every <hi>Sect</hi>
is engaged to root out <hi>all</hi> the reſt, as Enemies
to the Scepter of the <hi>Lord JES<g ref="char:V">Ʋ</g>S.</hi>
            </p>
            <p>Fourthly, <hi>The Execution of the</hi> Poenal Laws
<hi>being ſuſpended, by the late</hi> Declaration <hi>in Fa<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>vour
of</hi> Diſſenters, <hi>does only take off the Obliga<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>tion,
upon the account of</hi> Wrath, <hi>to Obedience; but
the</hi> Conſcience <hi>is ſtill obliged, to avoid all cauſleſs
and groundleſs</hi> Separations <hi>from our Churches.</hi>
This will be manifeſt enough to any one that
ſeriouſly reads the <hi>Declaration</hi> it ſelf, and a
late Treatiſe, <hi>Toleration not to be Abuſed,</hi> which
will extend as well to the <hi>Independents</hi> as the
<hi>Presbyterians,</hi> whoſe averſion to <hi>Toleration</hi> is
built upon the ſame common Principle, the
<hi>Divine Right</hi> of their one <hi>onely way</hi> of Worſhip
and Government, in the <hi>Sacred Oracles;</hi> and ſo
I refer them to that part of the Diſcourſe be<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>fore
mentioned, That they are obliged (as
before the <hi>Declaration)</hi> to avoid all <hi>groundleſs
Separations.</hi> For the Church of <hi>England</hi> is, as
before, eſtabliſhed as the <hi>Baſis,</hi> and ſo the Ob<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>ligation

of <hi>Conſcience</hi> ſtill Obligatory upon all
the <hi>Indulged</hi> Parties to avoid <hi>Schiſmes,</hi> and all
<hi>cauſleſs departure</hi> from us. The Obligation upon
the account of <hi>Wrath</hi> is removed indeed; but
if they would appear <hi>tender Conſciences</hi> to the
World, the <hi>King</hi>'s ſuſpenſion of the <hi>Puniſh<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>ment</hi>
ſhould make them the more <hi>Obedient</hi> for
Conſcience ſake; and a <hi>Gracious Indulgence</hi> ra<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>ther
<hi>abate,</hi> than <hi>heighten</hi> their <hi>Oppoſition</hi> againſt
the Church of <hi>England,</hi> ſtill eſtabliſhed.</p>
            <p>I ſhall now conclude all, by deſiring them
to conſider, what they themſelves acknowledge
in the <hi>Declaration</hi> of the <hi>Faith</hi> and <hi>Order</hi> of the
<hi>Congregational Churches,</hi> in Chap. 26. <hi>Of the
Church,</hi> &amp;c. <hi>The</hi> pureſt Churches <hi>under Hea<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>ven
are ſubject both to</hi> Mixture <hi>and</hi> Error. And
in their <hi>Inſtitution of Churches; Perſons that are
joyned in</hi> Church-fellowſhip, <hi>ought not lightly
to withdraw themſelves from the Communion of the
Church, to which they are ſo joyned.</hi> To theſe <hi>two</hi>
let them add the <hi>Four particulars</hi> in this Diſ<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>courſe
mentioned: and upon the reſult of all
conſider, Whether <hi>Ambition</hi> and <hi>Pride,</hi> rather

then a <hi>Conſcientious tenderneſs</hi> keep not up their
<hi>departure</hi> from, and <hi>oppoſition</hi> to the Church of
<hi>England.</hi> I am not as this <hi>Publican, Come
not near me, for I am</hi> holier <hi>then thou.</hi> An over<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>valluing
of our own <hi>worth,</hi> and a <hi>Phariſaical
contempt</hi> of others, is the uſual riſe of <hi>Schiſme;</hi>
for only <hi>by Pride cometh Contention;</hi> ſo the beſt
of <hi>Kings</hi> and <hi>Preachers.</hi>
            </p>
            <p>Thus the <hi>Valentinians</hi> looked on themſelves
as the only <hi>ſpiritual Men.</hi> The <hi>Phariſees</hi> the only
<hi>Separati, ſeparate Perſons.</hi> The <hi>Sadducees, Juſti,</hi>
the only <hi>Righteous.</hi> The <hi>Novatians,</hi>

the only <hi>Puritans:</hi> And none Men of <hi>Knowledge</hi>
but the <hi>Gnoſticks,</hi> and the acute <hi>Tertullian,</hi> when
<hi>Montaniſt.</hi> All others were <hi>Pſyſici,</hi> and he was
come to his <hi>Nos ſpirituales.</hi> And if <hi>(out of the
abundance of the heart the mouth ſpeaketh) ſpiritual
Pride</hi> is the original of your <hi>Schiſme.</hi> For you
only are GOD's <hi>Iſrael,</hi> his <hi>Elect</hi> and <hi>precious</hi>
ones. You only have <hi>Communion</hi> with GOD
in <hi>pure Ordinance<g ref="char:punc">▪</g>
               </hi> All the World faln ſhort of
GOD's <hi>Truth,</hi> but your ſelves: And none is
<hi>Orthodox</hi> out of the <hi>Pale</hi> of your own <hi>Church.</hi>

                  </gap>ſts, Prelatiſts</hi> and <hi>Arminians,</hi> but
even your dear Brethren, the <hi>Presbyterians,</hi> are
Limbs of the <hi>Antichriſtian Leviathan. All re<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>volted
from the</hi> Lord JESUS, <hi>and to be treated
as members of the</hi> Whore, <hi>whom the</hi> Saints <hi>hate,
and ſhall make deſolate and naked, eat her fleſh,
and drink her bloud.</hi> This is the Canting Dialect
of your <hi>Independent Leaders.</hi>
            </p>
            <p>To Conclude. If it be not <hi>Ambition,</hi> but
<hi>Conſcience;</hi> Let it ſo appear by your <hi>Charity</hi> to
<hi>Diſſenters,</hi> by a ſerious and impartial Enquiry
into the Grounds upon which you <hi>ſeparate</hi>
from us, without <hi>prejudice</hi> or <hi>paſſion;</hi> and do not
ſo far Idolize a <hi>Sect,</hi> or an <hi>Opinion,</hi> as to prefer
it before the <hi>Peace</hi> and <hi>Settlement</hi> of a <hi>Church,</hi>
and <hi>Nation.</hi>
