Anyone can now take and use these texts for their own purposes, but we respectfully request that due credit and attribution is given to their original source.</p>
            <p>Users should be aware of the process of creating the TCP texts, and therefore of any assumptions that can be made about the data.</p>
            <p>Text selection was based on the New Cambridge Bibliography of English Literature (NCBEL). If an author (or for an anonymous work, the title) appears in NCBEL, then their works are eligible for inclusion. Selection was intended to range over a wide variety of subject areas, to reflect the true nature of the print record of the period. In general, first editions of a works in English were prioritized, although there are a number of works in other languages, notably Latin and Welsh, included and sometimes a second or later edition of a work was chosen if there was a compelling reason to do so.</p>
            <p>Image sets were sent to external keying companies for transcription and basic encoding. Quality assurance was then carried out by editorial teams in Oxford and Michigan. 5% (or 5 pages, whichever is the greater) of each text was proofread for accuracy and those which did not meet QA standards were returned to the keyers to be redone. After proofreading, the encoding was enhanced and/or corrected and characters marked as illegible were corrected where possible up to a limit of 100 instances per text. Any remaining illegibles were encoded as &lt;gap&gt;s. Understanding these processes should make clear that, while the overall quality of TCP data is very good, some errors will remain and some readable characters will be marked as illegible. Users should bear in mind that in all likelihood such instances will never have been looked at by a TCP editor.</p>
            <p>The texts were encoded and linked to page images in accordance with level 4 of the TEI in Libraries guidelines.</p>
            <p>Copies of the texts have been issued variously as SGML (TCP schema; ASCII text with mnemonic sdata character entities); displayable XML (TCP schema; characters represented either as UTF-8 Unicode or text strings within braces); or lossless XML (TEI P5, characters represented either as UTF-8 Unicode or TEI g elements).</p>

               <head>I. <hi>Whether</hi> Independent</head>
               <p>OF all Religions I think I could make ſome<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>what among <hi>Them;</hi> for what Learning I have, will help maintain their Ignorance, and my being a Proſelyte, will promote their Confidence. It's probable I could frame as plauſible a Diſcourſe of the Reaſons inducing me to be of that Perſuaſion, as ſome they have admitted: But before I joyn with them, I ſhall wait a reſolution of the following Queries. And,</p>
               <p n="1">1. Whether I can eaſily joyn with ſuch, as would Pa<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>ganize and make Antichriſtian all the Churches of <hi>Chriſt</hi> in the whole world, except themſelves?</p>
               <p n="2">2. Whether that be a falſe Church that converts their Members, before they come to be of their Party?</p>
               <p n="3">3. Or that which would propound a better way for Miniſters maintenance, than God, who hath ordained, <hi>That they that ſerve at the Altar ſhould live by the Altar?</hi>
               </p>
               <p n="4">4. And that ſet up ſuch to be Preachers, as have no art nor knowledg in the Tongues?</p>
               <p n="5">5. That make the whole eſſence of the Miniſterial Call to conſiſt in Election of the people, without <hi>Ordination?</hi>
               </p>
               <p n="6">6. That cry down Biſhops, becauſe they cannot preach to all their Flock at once, and yet themſelves gather <hi>Chur<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>ches</hi> from <hi>York</hi> to <hi>London,</hi> ſo that many do not ſee the face of their Paſtor once in a year?</p>
               <p n="7">7. Whether under that Notion all Hereſies have not crept into the Church?</p>
               <p n="8">8. Whether I ſhall joyn to that Party, who never yet could ſet bounds to themſelves; but do ſtill expect ſome new Diſcoveries for Modification? and whether my con<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>ſent

               <p n="9">9. Whether I ſhall ſubmit to that Party, that hitherto neither the moſt Religious, the moſt Learned, nor the major part of any Nation ever yet ſubmitted to?</p>
               <p n="10">10. Whether the firſt and beſt of our Reformers ever thought of or practiſed ſuch a way?</p>
               <p n="11">11. Whether, were I now to die, I could take com<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>fort in their Abſolution, ſeeing not one of them is autho<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>rized thereunto? And,</p>
               <p n="12">12. That would perſuade us that all our Martyrs for the Proteſtant Cauſe, did worſhip God in a wrong way, and therein condemn the Generation of the Juſt?</p>
               <p>Could Anſwer be brought in to this Jury of Queſti<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>ons, That they are <hi>Not guilty,</hi> I could then better <hi>believe</hi> them, and <hi>relieve</hi> my ſelf: For the preſent, my Conſci<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>ence not being ſatisfied, I ſhall with them Catholick Cha<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>rity, and pray, That as they would ſhun the F<gap reason="illegible" resp="#UOM" extent="1 letter">

                  </gap>ock of Su<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>perſtition on the one hand: they would likewiſe avoid the Shelve of Separation on the other: And O thou that a<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>lone art an <hi>Independent</hi> Being, teach all thine to <hi>depend</hi> upon thee, for counſel and direction, and not to deſpiſe the Churches Communion!</p>

               <head>II. <hi>Whether</hi> Presbyterian?</head>
               <p>IT is a <hi>Thriving way,</hi> and I am <hi>poor;</hi> the <hi>tentation</hi> there<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>fore is ſtrong: but better enjoy <hi>peace</hi> of <hi>Conſcience,</hi> than the <hi>ſpoils</hi> of <hi>violence;</hi> I ſhall yet propoſe ſome <hi>caſes of conſcience,</hi> and upon their true <hi>Reſolves,</hi> I ſhall either ſhake hands with him, or continue what I am.</p>
               <p n="1">1. Whether I do not believe, That <hi>Chriſt</hi> taught his <hi>Apoſtles</hi> to pray, and ſay, <hi>Our Father which art in heaven?</hi>

               <p n="2">2. Whether I do not believe, That the <hi>Apoſtles</hi> did pray, and ſay, as Chriſt taught them, <hi>Our Father which art in heaven?</hi>
               </p>
               <p n="3">3. Whether I have done well, to expunge and oblite<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>rate that <hi>Prayer, Our Father which art in heaven?</hi>
               </p>
               <p n="4">4. Whether I do not believe; That <hi>Chriſt</hi> ſent his <hi>Apo<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>ſtles,</hi> as his <hi>Father</hi> ſent <hi>him? Joh.</hi> 20.21.</p>
               <p n="5">5. Whether I do not believe, That the <hi>Father</hi> ſent Chriſt to be the chief Biſhop of our <hi>Souls?</hi> 1 <hi>Pet.</hi> 2.25.</p>
               <p n="6">6. Whether I do not believe both theſe <hi>miſſions</hi> to be <hi>jure divino?</hi>
               </p>
               <p n="7">7. Whether I do not therefore believe, <hi>Epiſcopacy</hi> to be <hi>jure Divino?</hi>
               </p>
               <p n="8">8. Whether I do not believe <gap reason="foreign">

               <p n="9">9. Whether I do not believe <hi>Biſhop</hi> to be the <hi>name</hi> of <hi>office</hi> and <hi>dignity, Presbyter</hi> to be a <hi>name</hi> of <hi>order</hi> and <hi>duty?</hi>
               </p>
               <p n="10">10. Whether I do not believe <hi>Biſhops</hi> are ſometimes called <hi>Presbyters,</hi> becauſe they were <hi>Presbyters</hi> before they were <hi>Biſhops?</hi>
               </p>
               <p n="11">11. Whether I do not believe <hi>Presbyters</hi> qua <hi>Presbyters</hi> are never called <hi>Biſhops?</hi>
               </p>
               <p n="12">12. Whether I do not believe that St. <hi>Paul ſpake</hi> and <hi>did divinely,</hi> when he conſtituted <hi>Timothy</hi> Biſhop of <hi>Ephe<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>ſus,</hi> and <hi>Titus</hi> Biſhop of <hi>Creet,</hi> to overſee, and if need were to rebuke the <hi>Presbyters</hi> there?</p>
               <p n="13">13. Whether I do not believe St. <hi>Jerome</hi> ſpake <hi>piouſly,</hi> when he ſaid, <hi>Niſi exors quaedam &amp; ab omnibus eminens po<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>teſtas Epiſcopo ducetur, tot eſſent Schiſmata, quot Sacerdotes;</hi> That unleſs an <hi>extraordinary</hi> and <hi>peerleſs preheminence</hi> were given to the <hi>Biſhop,</hi> there would be as many <hi>Schiſms</hi> as <hi>Prieſts.</hi>
               </p>
               <p n="14">14. Whether I do not believe King <hi>James</hi> ſpake <hi>poli<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>tickly</hi>

               <p n="15">15. Whether I do not believe the Primitive Church, and ſo the <hi>Church ſucceſſively</hi> untill of very late years, one <hi>century</hi> and leſs than an half, was governed by <hi>Epiſ<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>copacy?</hi>
               </p>
               <p n="16">16. Whether therefore I do not believe I have done very <hi>ill</hi> to ſhoulder out <hi>Epiſcopacy,</hi> that I might get into his <hi>Chair?</hi>
               </p>
               <p n="17">17. Whether I do not believe that <hi>Thebulis</hi> and <hi>Aë<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>rius</hi> were therefore called <hi>Hereticks,</hi> becauſe they would have had an <hi>eccleſiaſtical parity, Biſhop</hi> and <hi>Presbyter</hi> all one?</p>
               <p n="18">18. Whether I do not believe, The Canon; of the <hi>A<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>poſtles</hi> diſtinguiſhed <hi>the three degrees</hi> of <hi>Biſhops, Presbyters</hi> and <hi>Deacons,</hi> and gave the <hi>ſuperiority</hi> to <hi>Biſhops<g ref="char:punc">▪</g> Can.</hi> 4, 6, 7</p>
               <p n="19">19. Whether I do not believe <hi>Thebulis</hi> and <hi>Aërius</hi> did therefore phanſie <hi>an eccleſiaſtical parity,</hi> becauſe they could not be made <hi>Biſhops,</hi> which they earneſtly affected? <hi>Epi<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>phan. Haereſ.</hi> 75.</p>
               <p n="20">20. Whether I do not believe the <hi>Church of</hi> Jeruſalem was called a <hi>Virgin Church,</hi> and never corrupted, until by <hi>Thebulis,</hi> becauſe he was not made a <hi>Biſhop? Euſ. l.</hi> 4 <hi>c.</hi> 22.</p>
               <p n="21">21. Whether I do not believe <hi>Ignatius</hi> lived in the A<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>poſtles days, and ſaw <hi>Christ</hi> in the fleſh, and being yet a <hi>Bresbyter,</hi> writ to the <hi>Antiochians,</hi> to remember <hi>Evodius</hi> their <hi>Biſhop,</hi> who firſt from the <hi>Apoſtles</hi> received the <hi>ſupe<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>riority</hi> above the <hi>Presbyters;</hi> and after being <hi>Biſhop</hi> him<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>ſelf, and going to ſuffer under <hi>Trajan,</hi> writ to the <hi>Clergy</hi> and <hi>Presbyters</hi> there, That they would be diligent in feed<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>ing their <hi>flo<gap reason="illegible" resp="#UOM" extent="1 letter">

                     </gap>k,</hi> untill <hi>God</hi> did ſhow unto them, Him that ſhould rule over them after his death? And in another <hi>Epiſtle ad Sard.</hi> thus, <hi>Presbyters</hi> be obedient to your Bi<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>ſhops; <hi>Deacons</hi> be obedient to your <hi>Presbyters; Laymen

               <p n="22">22. Whether I do not believe <hi>Aërius</hi> was the firſt that voted down all <hi>Faſts. Vigilantius</hi> the firſt that voted down all <hi>Feaſts</hi> appointed by the Church both <hi>Hereticks;</hi> and therefore whether I may not fear, I am ſomething <hi>Heretical</hi> in following their <hi>ſteps?</hi>
               </p>
               <p n="23">23. Whether I do not believe, that S. <hi>James</hi> ſet out a <hi>Lyturgie</hi> or book of <hi>Common Prayer,</hi> for the Church in his time; St. <hi>Baſil</hi> the like in his time; St. <hi>Chryſoſtome</hi> the like in his time; and ſo downwards untill Mr. <hi>John Cal<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>vins</hi> time?</p>
               <p n="24">24. Whether I do not bel<gap reason="illegible" resp="#UOM" extent="1 letter">

                  </gap>eve, that Mr. <hi>John Calvin</hi> himſelf thought well of <hi>Common Prayers,</hi> and particularly of our <hi>Common Prayer Book,</hi> when he ſaid, <hi>Quod ad formam precum &amp; rituum Eccleſiae, valdè probo, ut certa illa extet, à qua paſtoribus in ſua functione d<gap reason="illegible" resp="#UOM" extent="1 letter">

                     </gap>ſcedere non licet;</hi> Concer<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>ning a <hi>Form</hi> of <hi>Prayer,</hi> and <hi>Eccleſiaſtical Rites,</hi> I very well like, that there be a certain and conſtant one, from which the <hi>Paſtors</hi> of the <hi>Church</hi> may in no wiſe depart or vary?</p>
               <p n="25">25. Whether I do not believe, That every word in the <hi>Common Prayer Book</hi> is in the <hi>Bible,</hi> either <hi>literally</hi> or <hi>ratio<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>nally</hi> deduced thence. <hi>v. g.</hi> for the <hi>Confeſſion. Almighty God,</hi> Gen. 17.1. <hi>And moſt merciful Father,</hi> Exod. 34.6. <hi>We have erred and ſtrayed from thy ways like loſt ſheep,</hi> Pſal. 119.176. <hi>We have followed too much the deviſes and deſires of our own hearts,</hi> Jer. 18.12. <hi>We have offended againſt thy holy laws,</hi> Mat. 7.8. <hi>We have left undone thoſe things which we ought to have done,</hi> 1 Sam. 15.24. <hi>And we have done thoſe things which we ought not to have done,</hi> 1 Sam. 24.5. 2 Sam. 12.13. <hi>And there is no health in us,</hi> Pſa. 38.3. <hi>But thou O Lord have mercy upon us miſerable offenders,</hi> Luke 18.13. <hi>Spare thou them O God which confeſs their faults,</hi> Prov. 28.13. <hi>Reſtore
<pb n="8" facs="tcp:40707:5"/>thou them that be penitent,</hi> Ez. 18.31. <hi>According to thy pro<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>miſe declared unto mankind in Chriſt Jeſus our Lord,</hi> Mat. 11 18. <hi>And grant O moſt merciful Father for his ſake,</hi> Joh. 16.23. <hi>That we may hereafter live a godly, righteous, and ſober life,</hi> Titus 2.12. <hi>To the glory of thy holy name,</hi> 1 Tim. 6.16.</p>
               <p n="26">26. Whether I do not believe the <hi>Abſolution, Almighty God the Father of our Lord Jeſus Chriſt,</hi> be grounded upon, John 20.23.</p>
               <p n="27">27. Whether I do not believe the <hi>Lords Prayer,</hi> with the <hi>Doxology, Thine is the Kingdom, Power and Clory,</hi> is <hi>ver<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>batim</hi> in Mat. 6 and without that <hi>Doxology</hi> in Luke 11.</p>
               <p n="28">28. Whether I do not believe, thoſe <hi>Verſicles, O God make ſpeed to ſave us,</hi> be not in Pſal. 102.13. <hi>Open thou my lips O Lord. And my mouth ſhall ſhew forth thy praiſe,</hi> Pſal. 51.15.</p>
               <p>I might be endleſs: to anſwer therefore ſome of your <hi>Grand Objections;</hi> I ask,</p>
               <p n="29">29. Whether I do not believe, <hi>Remember not Lord our offenſes, nor the offenſes of our forefathers,</hi> is a <hi>ſincere prayer</hi> for the <hi>living, and no ſinful prayer</hi> for the <hi>dead, viz.</hi> That <hi>God</hi> would not viſit the <hi>offenſes</hi> of our <hi>forefathers</hi> upon in their <hi>children,</hi> and grounded upon <hi>Exo</hi> 20. and <hi>Ezek.</hi> 18.</p>
               <p n="30">30. Whether I do not believe, <hi>From ſudden death good Lord deliver us,</hi> is a <hi>fervent ejaculation,</hi> no <hi>idle deſire,</hi> that <hi>God</hi> would not take us away unpreparedly, until we have made ready <hi>our Accounts?</hi>
               </p>
               <p n="31">31.                <p n="7">7. Whether if <hi>I</hi> be born again, and made a <hi>Chriſtian</hi> by true <hi>Baptiſm,</hi> and afterward confirmed by a true <hi>Biſhop,</hi> though I am not annointed with oyl, I may be ſaved?</p>
               <p n="8">8. Whether if <hi>I</hi> believe the Scripture, and frame my life according, though I do not equally believe Tradition <hi>I</hi> may be ſaved?</p>

               <p>Theſe <hi>Queries</hi> with a very few more by moderate and, unbyaſſed men, might be brought to a reconciliation, and that they may be, <hi>I</hi> pray you let us joyn in one Prayer, till we joyn in all points.</p>

               <p>My <hi>Religion</hi> is <hi>good,</hi> for it is <hi>Gods;</hi> my <hi>Calling</hi> is <hi>Law<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>ful,</hi> for it is of God; my Service is honorable, for it is for God and my Savior, my meſſage in which I am employed is <hi>honourable,</hi> for it is of Peace, and to be an Inſtrument of Reconciliation betwixt God and his People, and my pro<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>ceeding in it, if it be as it ought to be, in Love, ſhall be acceptable; Joyfully I may do it, for God will reward it; Freely I may do it, for God will make it good; Boldly I may do it, for God will defend it; and inceſſantly I ſhould do it, for firſt or laſt God will give a bleſſing to it.</p>
               <p>But who, who is worthy to do this weighty buſineſs? not the beſt of men, how much more unworthy am I the worſt of men and chief of Sinners? Truly of my ſelf I am as unworthy as unable, and unworthy to be enabled, if thou enter in Judgment with me, That thou mayeſt not, I thus addreſs my ſelf to thy Throne of Grace.</p>
               <p>Look upon me O my God in the face of Jeſus Chriſt I beſeech thee, and for his ſake aſſiſt me with thy Spirit, That I may ſpeak thy word, leſt I be guilty of careleſnes; That I may not ſpeak before I Learn, leſt <hi>I</hi> be guilty of Raſhneſs.
