EEBO-TCP is a partnership between the Universities of Michigan and Oxford and the publisher ProQuest to create accurately transcribed and encoded texts based on the image sets published by ProQuest via their Early English Books Online (EEBO) database (http://eebo.chadwyck.com). The general aim of EEBO-TCP is to encode one copy (usually the first edition) of every monographic English-language title published between 1473 and 1700 available in EEBO.

EEBO-TCP aimed to produce large quantities of textual data within the usual project restraints of time and funding, and therefore chose to create diplomatic transcriptions (as opposed to critical editions) with light-touch, mainly structural encoding based on the Text Encoding Initiative (http://www.tei-c.org).

The EEBO-TCP project was divided into two phases. The 25,363 texts created during Phase 1 of the project have been released into the public domain as of 1 January 2015. Anyone can now take and use these texts for their own purposes, but we respectfully request that due credit and attribution is given to their original source.

Users should be aware of the process of creating the TCP texts, and therefore of any assumptions that can be made about the data.

Text selection was based on the New Cambridge Bibliography of English Literature (NCBEL). If an author (or for an anonymous work, the title) appears in NCBEL, then their works are eligible for inclusion. Selection was intended to range over a wide variety of subject areas, to reflect the true nature of the print record of the period. In general, first editions of a works in English were prioritized, although there are a number of works in other languages, notably Latin and Welsh, included and sometimes a second or later edition of a work was chosen if there was a compelling reason to do so.

Image sets were sent to external keying companies for transcription and basic encoding. Quality assurance was then carried out by editorial teams in Oxford and Michigan. 5% (or 5 pages, whichever is the greater) of each text was proofread for accuracy and those which did not meet QA standards were returned to the keyers to be redone. After proofreading, the encoding was enhanced and/or corrected and characters marked as illegible were corrected where possible up to a limit of 100 instances per text. Any remaining illegibles were encoded as <gap>s. Understanding these processes should make clear that, while the overall quality of TCP data is very good, some errors will remain and some readable characters will be marked as illegible. Users should bear in mind that in all likelihood such instances will never have been looked at by a TCP editor.

The texts were encoded and linked to page images in accordance with level 4 of the TEI in Libraries guidelines.

Copies of the texts have been issued variously as SGML (TCP schema; ASCII text with mnemonic sdata character entities); displayable XML (TCP schema; characters represented either as UTF-8 Unicode or text strings within braces); or lossless XML (TEI P5, characters represented either as UTF-8 Unicode or TEI g elements).

Nos Roberto Conde d'Eſſex & d'Ewe, viſconte d'Hereford, Baron Ferrers de Charteley, Bourchier y Louan, &c. y Carlos Baron d'Effingham, grande Almirāte d'Yngalaterra, teniendo cargo de vna armada Real, que ha mandado apercebir y echar a la mar la Mageſtad de la ſereniſsima Princeſa Doña Iſabel Reyna de Yngalaterra, de Francia, y de Yrlanda &c. Hazemos ſaber a todas y qualesquier perſonas, que ſu Mageſtad ha hecho juntar, y deſpedir ladicha Armada para defenſa de ſus Reynos, ſeñorios y vaſſallos, contra vn tan grande poder, como auiſan de todas las partes de la Chriſtiandad, que tiene ya juntado el Rey d'Eſpaña, y pretende aun muy mucho mas de aumentar, con nueuo aparato de gente y de nauios que haze cada dia venir en daño de la ſereniſsima Reyna; Como el año de 1588. lo tento y acometio ya otra vez (en el tiempo meſmo que los Deputados de ambas part s, tratauan de pazes) con la mayor Armada que en ſu tiempo jamas juntado fueſſe; Aunque fue Dios ſeruido, mediante'l valor y virtud de los generoſos y leales vaſſallos de ſu Mageſtad tornarle ſu intento dél todo vano. Y porquanto ſu Mageſtad ſe halla al preſente en terminos de muy buena y entera amiſtad, y correſpondencia, con todos los Reyes y Principes de la Chriſtiandad, ecceto el Rey d'Eſpaña, el qual, ha ya tantos años, que ſe ha, muy ſin razon, manifieſtamente enemiſtado con ſu Mageſtad, como ſe ha viſto por los efetos, de lo que tantas vezes, ha tan iniuſtamente pretendido, contra ſu Real perſona, ſus Eſtados y vaſſallos, no auiendoſele antes de parte de ſu Mageſtad dado ocaſion ninguna para ello: nos los ſuſodichos Cōde y Almirante, hazemos ſaber y certificamos a todas y qualeſquier perſonas; que ſu Mageſtad, nos ha muy eſpreſſamente mādado, y encargado, que en eſte nueſtro viaje, no acometamos, ni hagamos daño ni agrauio ninguno, a perſona ninguna de qualquiera nacion que ſea; ſi no ſolamente a los vaſſallos naturales d'el Rey d'Eſpaña, o a los que, no ſiendo ſus vaſſallos, ſe prouare que le ayudan con gente, nauios, artilleria, mantenimientos o qualquier' otros aparejos de guerra, en daño y perjuyzio de ſu Magiſtad. y que pretendemos obedeſcer en ello, como ſomos obligados, a la voluntad de ſu Mageſtad. Por lo qual mādamos y ordenamos, muy encareſcidamente, ſo pena de grauiſsimo caſtigo, a todos y qualquier perſona, que fuere en ladicha Armada debaxo de nueſtro mando, que ſe ayan y gouiernen cōforme a eſte mandamiento de ſu Mageſtad. Pero con todo eſſo, para euitar todos ocaſiones, que puedan poner duda, quien y quales ſean las perſonas, (no ſiendo vaſſallos del Rey d'Eſpaña) a quien podremos hazer cargo, de hauer manifieſtamente ayudado, y aſsiſtido, a los aparatos quel dicho Rey haze por mar o por tierra, en daño de ſu Mageſtad. Rogamos de parte de Dios, y encargamos muy de veras, (para aclarar tanto mejor eſte negocio) a todos los que, no ſiendo vaſſallos naturales de'l Rey d'Eſpaña, auran, nonoſtāte ayudadole o acudido a el con nauios, mantenimiētos o municiones, como eſta ya dicho, que hagan luego boluer y retirar ſuſdichos nauios y aparejos de guerra, de qualeſquier Puertos d'Eſpaña o de Portugal, donde ſe hallaren o ſe aparten de la compañia y ſeruicio de los nauios deldicho Rey, contra nueſtra Armada, y ſe tornē a ſus tierras, o ſi bien les pareſciere ſe junten con nueſtra dicha Armada. Prometiendoles, en nombre y por parte de la Sereniſsima Mageſtad de la Reyna, ſeguridad de ſus haziendas y perſonas, y que ſeran tratados y defendidos como amigos, y podran con toda libertad gozar y diſponer de todos ſus nauios y aparejos, que han ſido tomados o embargados por el Rey d'Eſpaña, o pretendian ſer embiados a ſu ſeruicio, o auran ſido por ſus dueños ſacados y apartados de ſu dicho ſeruicio, con tal, que en ninguna manera s'empleen en deſſe uicio ni daño de ſu Mageſtad, o de ſus Generales ſino como conuiene a amigos. Proteſtādo a todos los que (teniendo noticia d'eſta Real intencion de S. Mageſtad, y de la promeſſa que de ſu parte les hazemos, y prometemos de cumplir la contodo fauor) moſtraren, de no tener cuenta, de acetar eſte nueſtro offreſcimiento, y no procuraren de complir lo que tan juſtamente les pedimos, para ſu proprio bien y libertad, que tendremos en tal caſo mucha razon, como lo permiten las leyes de la guerra, de tomar y tratar a los tales, como a perſonas que conſienten con el Rey d'Eſpaña, y le aſsiſten a daño de ſu Magiſtad moſtrando ſe le por conſiguiente manifieſtamente enemigos. Y que ſi no hauiendo hecho caſo de lodicho, les ſucediere algun daño o perjuyzio, en ſus perſonas o haziendas pro medio de qualquiera de los de nueſtr Armada, por auer dado ayuda y ſocorro al Rey d'Eſpaña, no ſe podran juſtamente quexar, o procurar que ſus Principes o ſeñores pidan de aqui en adelante que ſe les haga pro ello ſatisfacion o recompenſa ninguna. Y para mayor declaration de todo lo ſuſodicho, hauem os firmado y ſellado el original de la preſente, para que qualquiera perſona que quiſiere, lo pueda ver y leer, y hauemos tambien procurado que s'imprimeſſe en Frances, Italiano, Flamenco y Eſpañol, y que ſe diſtribuyeſſen los exemplares, en los mas puertos que poſſible fuera d'Eſpaña y de Portugal, para que en ellos y en otros de la ſujeçion deldicho Rey, ſe tenga tanto mejor noticia de todo eſto.
