¶ By the King.
¶ A Proclamation for the continuing of Farthing-Tokens.
FOrasmuch as since the publishing of Our third Proclamation giuen at Royston, the sixe and twentieth day of October 1615. establishing the continuance of Our Farthing-Tokens, and prohibiting the vse of all, or any other Tokens whatsoever; Wee are informed, That diuers Chandlers and other Tradesmen doe continue the making, vse and vtterance of their vnlawfull Tokens of lead, brasse, or other mettall, or matter contrary to Our Command by seueral Proclamations formerly declared, and in contempt of Our Royal commandement, and in derogation of Our Prerogatiue Royal, pretending to be sucharged with Our Farthing-tokens for want of a due rechange of them into sterling money, which by Our former Proclamation was limited but for one yeere onely, for the intent of the better distributing of Our saide Farthing-tokens; And whereas the said Chandiers and other Tradesmen, to whose hands the greatest quantitie of Tokens are brought, haue also alleadged, that the issuing of Our said Farthing-tokens from the Makers at the rate of one and twentie shillings in Tokens, for twentie shillings in Sterling money, did breed an inconuenience and a further surcharge vnto them, in that many for the gaine of that twelue pence in twentie shillings, would take Our saide Tokens by great summes, and so with the same and some money pay handy-craftsmen for their labour at the weekes end: Wee (intending to remooue the neglects, abuses, and inconueniences aforesaid, and that euerie person may be left without all excuse, if againe they should presume to infringe Our Royall commandement); Doe by these presents publish and declare Our Royall will and pleasure, that all points and Articles contained in Our said former Proclamations be duely in all things obserued, performed and kept; and that the further vse of the said leaden Tokens, and all or any other Tokens whatsoeuer made or vsed within Our Realms of England and Ireland, and Dominion of Wales, bee from hencefoorth vtterly suppressed and abolished: And that Our Fathing-tokens formerly by these presents authorized shall continue and be without any alteration of the stampe, or print now vsed, according to the intent of Our said former Proclamations. And furthermore Our Royall will and pleasure is; That from hencefoorth (in the issuing of Our said Farthing-tokens) there be giuen but only twentie shillings in Farthing-tokens for twentie shillings in Sterling moneys, and that there bee established a continuall rechange for them within Our Citie of London, where Our said Tokens shall bee issued, that all Tradesmen and others receiuing the said Tokens for Sterling money may at all conuenient times, haue in like manner Sterling money for Our Farthing-tokens, deliuering in exchange one and twentie shillings in Tokens for twentie shillings of Sterling money, according to the intent of Our first Proclamation, bearing date the nineteenth daie of May, in the eleuenth yeere of Our Reigne of Great Brittaine, France, and Ireland. And therefore Wee doe straitly prohibite and forbid as aforesaid, all and euery person and persons whatsoeuer, aswell to vse, receiue, or keepe any Tokens whatsoeuer, other then Our said Farthing-tokens, as also to make and counterfeit Our said Farthing-tokens, or the Engines or Instruments whereby they are made, or to bee made, vpon paine of condigne punishment for their offences in contempt of Our Commandement, and in derogation of Our Prerogatiue Royall; Straitly charging, and commanding all and singular Maiors, Iustices of the Peace, Sheriffes, Bailiffes, Constables, Headboroughes, and all other Officers and ministers to whom it shall or may appertaine, to doe their vttermost endeuors, for the discouery and searching out of all offences, and offendors, against this Our Royall Commandement, and for the due execution and performance of the Premisses.
