            <p>Users should be aware of the process of creating the TCP texts, and therefore of any assumptions that can be made about the data.</p>
            <p>Text selection was based on the New Cambridge Bibliography of English Literature (NCBEL). If an author (or for an anonymous work, the title) appears in NCBEL, then their works are eligible for inclusion. Selection was intended to range over a wide variety of subject areas, to reflect the true nature of the print record of the period. In general, first editions of a works in English were prioritized, although there are a number of works in other languages, notably Latin and Welsh, included and sometimes a second or later edition of a work was chosen if there was a compelling reason to do so.</p>
            <p>Image sets were sent to external keying companies for transcription and basic encoding. Quality assurance was then carried out by editorial teams in Oxford and Michigan. 5% (or 5 pages, whichever is the greater) of each text was proofread for accuracy and those which did not meet QA standards were returned to the keyers to be redone. After proofreading, the encoding was enhanced and/or corrected and characters marked as illegible were corrected where possible up to a limit of 100 instances per text. Any remaining illegibles were encoded as &lt;gap&gt;s. Understanding these processes should make clear that, while the overall quality of TCP data is very good, some errors will remain and some readable characters will be marked as illegible. Users should bear in mind that in all likelihood such instances will never have been looked at by a TCP editor.</p>
            <p>The texts were encoded and linked to page images in accordance with level 4 of the TEI in Libraries guidelines.</p>
            <p>Copies of the texts have been issued variously as SGML (TCP schema; ASCII text with mnemonic sdata character entities); displayable XML (TCP schema; characters represented either as UTF-8 Unicode or text strings within braces); or lossless XML (TEI P5, characters represented either as UTF-8 Unicode or TEI g elements).</p>

Whan y<hi rend="sup">u</hi> ſhalte entre in to the lande, whiche the lorde thy god ſhal gyue the, beware that y<hi rend="sup">u</hi> lerne not to do after y<hi rend="sup">e</hi> abominacions of thoſe naci<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>ons.             <p>Of theſe ſayingꝭ it appereth more clere than the lyght of the mydday, that y<hi rend="sup">e</hi> pro<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>noſticacions &amp; foreſayinges of all aſtrono<g ref="char:EOLunhyphen"/>mers, are fou<g ref="char:cmbAbbrStroke">̄</g>ded but vpon flowing ſande and vnſtable, whiche the wordes of god beyng of ſo great efficacite, eaſely deſtroy<g ref="char:EOLunhyphen"/>eth &amp; bringeth them vnto nought.             <p>Alſo Ioſue .ij. The lorde is your god, he is the god in heuen aboue, &amp; in erth be<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>nethe. Ecclaſtici .j. There is one moſt hye maker of all, omnipote<g ref="char:cmbAbbrStroke">̄</g>t &amp; a myghty kyng and moche to be dredde, ſyttyng vpon his trone, a god hauyng dominion. .j. to the Corinth .viij. We knowe that an ydoll is nothynge in this worlde / &amp; that there is no god but one / to vs onely there is but one god, whiche is the father / of whome

               <p>¶ It beſemeth not to cloke or hyde the truthe / but rather it is very expedyent to ſhewe it mooſt openly to euery man. And bycauſe god hymſelfe is the very truthe / let vs gyue eare with attente &amp; a diligent mynde vnto his owne wordes. In Deu<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>tro. xxviij. it is wryte<g ref="char:cmbAbbrStroke">̄</g> thus. Be not careful / ſaying, what ſhall we eate, or what ſhall we drynke / or wherw<hi rend="sup">t</hi> ſhall we be clad.                <p>In the .xxij. chap. Hieremy ſaith vnto the euyll kynge Ioacim. Thy father, dyd he not eate &amp; drynke (that is to ſaye, lyued in peace) &amp; kepte equite &amp; iuſtyce, that tyme whan he was in proſperite? He iudged y<hi rend="sup">e</hi> cauſe of the poore &amp; nedy / ſo y<hi rend="sup">t</hi> it redowned to his owne goodnes. And was it not ther<g ref="char:EOLunhyphen"/>fore (ſayth the lorde) bycauſe he knewe &amp; regarded me? but thy eyes &amp; thy herte, is all gyuen vnto auaryce, &amp; blode ſhedynge and that of innoce<g ref="char:cmbAbbrStroke">̄</g>tes / &amp; to iniuſt vexacion of other, ronnyng to euery vnhappy dede.                <head>¶ Of kynges and pryncys.</head>
               <p>¶ All powers are ordeyned by god. Rom. xiij. wherfore all pryncys ought hyely for to ſtudy &amp; to apply them ſelues, that they may lyue &amp; do ſeruyce according to y<hi rend="sup">e</hi> wyll of hym y<hi rend="sup">t</hi> is kyng of all kynges, &amp; lorde of al lordes, of whom they take their power. And not onely kyng &amp; kyngdomes / but al<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>ſo princys, &amp; them that be of y<hi rend="sup">e</hi> cou<g ref="char:cmbAbbrStroke">̄</g>ſell, are ordeyned of god. Prouerb. viij. If they

Thou art he that ſubdueſt my people vnder me. For al thinges (heuen, y<hi rend="sup">e</hi> worlde, au<g ref="char:cmbAbbrStroke">̄</g>gels, Paule Cephas, Appollo, the prynce, theleme<g ref="char:cmbAbbrStroke">̄</g>tes, tyme, ſatan, ſynne, deth, hell) are ſubiecte vnto vs: where we be ſubiecte vnto god / hauynge no confidence but onely in hym. Experience of this they may ſe in y<hi rend="sup">e</hi> bokes of Iudicum and of kynges.</p>
               <p>Prouerb. xxj. As the diuiſions of waters (whiche were ſet aboue the firmament &amp; vndernethe, onely by goddes diſpoſicion) ſo is the hert of a kyng in y<hi rend="sup">e</hi> hande of god / what way it pleaſe hym, he ſhall make it to bowe. Ecclaſtici. x. The power of the worlde is in the hande of god. And all the iniquite &amp; ſynne of the people, is abomy<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>nable: and whan tyme is, he ſhall ſet vp a profytable ruler ouer them.</p>

               <p>¶ Many notable examples we haue in holy ſcripture of pryncys &amp; kynges, how they haue be mekened &amp; fal to repentau<g ref="char:cmbAbbrStroke">̄</g>ce thorowe the worde of god / namely Ione the thyrde. The worde came to y<hi rend="sup">e</hi> kyng of Niniue / &amp; he roſe from his ſeate of eſtate, and keſt from hym his clothes / &amp; put on ſackcloth, &amp; ſate downe in the aſſhes. Alſo Dauid, monyſſhed of Nathan, ſayd Pec<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>caui. ij. reg. xij. &amp;. xxiiij. Eccliaſtici. x. The ſeatꝭ of proude leders, god hath deſtroyed and hath made to ſyt in theyr ſtede, thoſe that be mylde. The rotes of proude peo<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>ple (that is rycheſſe) god hathe made to wyther awaye: &amp; planted for them ſuche as were meke, euen of the ſame people. God hath deſtroyed the good reporte of y<hi rend="sup">e</hi> proude / &amp; reſerued y<hi rend="sup">e</hi> fame of them that be meke or lowly in theyr owne conceyte.</p>

               <p>¶ Eccleſiaſt. x. The dignytye of a wyſe prynce (that is of hym that dredeth god) ſhall be ſtablyſſhed. Eccleſiaſtes .x. Hap<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>pye is that lande, whiche hath a noble

               <p>Iob. xxxvij. There ſhall be take<g ref="char:cmbAbbrStroke">̄</g> from the vngodly, their lyght. Pſal. ix. The vngod<g ref="char:EOLunhyphen"/>ly is trapped in the workes of his owne handes / &amp; ſhall be ouerthrowen in to hell, with all them y<hi rend="sup">t</hi> forgete god. Pſal. lxxiiij. god ſayth. I ſhal breake y<hi rend="sup">e</hi> hornes of theſe vngracyous: but y<hi rend="sup">e</hi> power of y<hi rend="sup">e</hi> ryghtwyſe ſhall be ſtyll exalted. Pſal. ciij.                <p>¶ He is by ryght called vngodly, whiche co<g ref="char:cmbAbbrStroke">̄</g>temneth goddes worde, wherby fayth co<g ref="char:cmbAbbrStroke">̄</g>meth in to vs, by the whiche onely we be iuſtifyed &amp; ſaued. Eſaye. lvij. The vn<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>godly (ſaythe the lorde) hathe no peace. Eccle. xxviij. An vngodly man troubleth frendes. And amongeſt them that are in peace / he caſteth debate. Chryſte ſaythe Ioh. xv. As they haue perſecuted me / ſo ſhall they perſecute you.</p>

               <head>¶ Of the ſtate of them that be called ſpirituall, and of the chyrche.</head>
               <p>¶ The ſtate of the chyrche / whether it be called of ſpiritual men / of religyous / or of monkes: it is no pryncys ſtate or dignite / but a mynyſtracion or a ſeruyce: or elles theyr parte ſhall be amongeſt the kynges of the infydeles. Luc. xxij. He that is gre<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>ter amongeſt you / muſt be as y<hi rend="sup">e</hi> yonger: &amp; he that gothe before / muſt be as a ſeruer.</p>

               <p>¶ Hiere. xxiij. The lorde ſayth. Wo be to you paſtours, that deſtroye and teare in peces the flocke of my paſture. &amp;c. Sure<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>ly, bothe prophete and preeſt are polluted And in my houſe (ſayth the lorde) I haue

               <p>¶ Euery one y<hi rend="sup">t</hi> ſpeketh agaynſt Chryſte, and cleueth to y<hi rend="sup">e</hi> pleaſures of this worlde that ſhortly ſhall peryſſhe: is Antechryſt. .j. Iohan .ij. It is ſure, that there be ma<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>ny Antechryſtes. But the very hye &amp; prin<g ref="char:EOLunhyphen"/>cipall Antechryſt, is begon to be reueled and declared in theſe our dayes, by holy ſcriptures / whiche vntyl he be deſtroyed with the ſpryte of the mouth of our lorde Ieſus Chryſt / ſhall rule and rage cruelly in y<hi rend="sup">e</hi> worlde. Daniel .xj. And there ſhall fall of them that be well lerned: ſo that they ſhall be tryed by fyre, and choſen out, and made whyte, vnto the tyme appoyn<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>ted.                <p>¶ Onely god knoweth the chriſtyan chyr<g ref="char:EOLunhyphen"/>che: for it is ſpirituall, and knowen onely by the ſpiryte: wherfore to god onely whi<g ref="char:EOLunhyphen"/>che is a ſpiryte, it is entyerly knowen. This chyrche, as longe as it cleueth faſt to the worde of god: it can not but ſtande ſure. yf not / ſoone it peryſſheth. How euer ſo moche other thynge is conſtytute and ordeyned in counſelles of preeſtes / byſ<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>ſhoppes / and pryncys of this worlde. And not as many bothe do thinke and ſaye, that theſe newe lawes &amp; newe lernynges are the cauſes. Is not this newe lernynge the very trewe worde of god?             <p>Thoſe ſorte wolde I exhorte to co<g ref="char:cmbAbbrStroke">̄</g>me whyles they haue lyght, and beleue in it, leeſt (remaynynge here in theyr inwarde darknes) they be keſt in to the outwarde darknes, where ſhall be euer ſorowe and myſery. ¶ An other ſorte there is (the more pytye) that ſeme to fauour y<hi rend="sup">e</hi> lyght of goddes worde, and folowe and fauour the preachers therof: but they ſeke the li<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>bertie of the fleſſhe, and not of the ſpirite, lyuynge after theyr fleſhly luſtes, and af<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>ter the noughty faſhyon of the worlde, in couetouſnes / ambicion / pryde, with infy<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>nyte other euylles / onely ſekyng for theyr owne profytes and pleaſures / though it be to theyr chryſtyan brothers greate de<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>triment. Make your dyches or holes for to plante in / aboute the full of the moone at nyght. Whan it is full moone, couer the rootes of your trees.</p>
               <p>In moyſt places ſowe your ſede / betwixt the newe moone and the olde / or aboute foure dayes before, or after. They wyll alſo that ye wenowe your corne or ſedes,
