IN this lyttell Treatyle here folowyng yu mayste beholde moste Christen rea [...]r (as in a glas most clere and bryght) ye very vysnomy, Image, Figure, Shape, and fassiō, of our Popyshe po­pettes whiche hathe named them selue Popes (whiche ye truthe to saye are By­shoppes of Rome) how & in what thyng theyr great labors and paynes cōsysteth Only in makynge of lawes to stabily­she theyr owne auctoryties, And in set­tynge vp longe Matyns and Masses, with Diriges & other patrynges, That at no tyme ther shulde be any place gyuē that Goddes worde shulde be preached to the comfort of them that are derelye bought with the bloude of our mercifull sauiour Christ. These are the mysty aun­gelles of Satan (yt Paule warneth vs of (whiche transfygureth them selues in to the symilitude & Image of the aungelles [Page] of lyght. ¶ Here in mayste thou also beholde nowe that all Ceremonies that at this day is vsed in the church, Are the Institucions and ordinaunces of Men, and therfore not to be estemed of no such valour, that Godes worde shulde gyue place to let these dom paterynges be mi­nistred. But that all these ought to gyue place and clerely to be put awaye, when godes worde cōmeth to be lyuely and clerely preached, which the Lorde of Glory graunt to be, Amen

EVaristus Byshop of Rome ordey­ [...]d that if a Byshop were accused by the comen people, it shulde not be re­ceaued. ¶Item that a Byshop whan he preacheth, shulde haue .viii. Deacons to wayght vpon hym.

¶ In the yere of oure Lorde god .C.xix.

¶ Alexander bysshop of Rome ordeyned that they shulde be accursed that dyd let any yt were sent from ye See apostolicall [Page] ¶And yt a lay man shuld not sewe none of the Clergye at the tēporall lawe vpō payne of excommunication. ☞ Item yt ones a day the Preste shulde sacrifyce the bodye of Christ. &c. ¶Item he added to ye Sacrifyce and memory, of the passion of Christ (Qui pridie ꝙ paterecur. &c.) to be sayd vnto these wordes (Thys is my bodye. &c.) ¶Item he ordeyned that water shuld be myngled with ye wyne, & that it shuld be vnleuioned brede that was oc­cupyed in ye oblation & not leuende bred as was afore. ¶Syxtus bysshop of Rome, ordeyned yt no prophane creature or lay man shulde lay hondes on holy thynges. ¶ Also that ye corporas clothe shuld be of fyne lynyn. ¶And that the Masse shuld be celebrate vpon the auter, & that in it shuld be sayd thryse Sanctus.

¶ Higinius Byshop of Rome ordeyned that Solempne churches shulde be halo­wed wtout sacrifice or without a masse. And yt the materiall thynges of the chur­che sholde not be turned in Prophayne vses. And yt a infant shule be presented at Baptyme or confirmacion, or Bisho­pynge be one man or one woman.

☞ Pius Byshop of Rome Ordeyned Easter daye to be celebrate vpon the sonday. Also the payne that prestes shuld haue if they neglected or let passe any parte of the Celebration. Also that none shuld swere nether by the here nor hed of god. Also maydens before. xxv. yere of age & [Page] after the .xii. daye shulde not be consecrated into religion. ¶And yt is sacrilege rashely to cause the profettes of the chur­che to be minished nor the religious mē to be put out of fauor.

¶ Sater Bysshop of Rome ordeyned ye a preeste shuld not say masse or sacrifyce except ii. Folkes at the leaste were pre­sent. And that nūnes shuld not coche the corporas clothe the Chalyce nor the ky­uerynge of the chalys. And that Nūnes shall not Sacrifice in the tyme of serui­ce. Item that a blessynge Preste be present, at the tyme of matrymony, Item that a mayde be gyuen to her husbande solempni of her father or mother or other frendes. Item yt a vnlawful othe is to be broken. Item ye vpon Mawndy, thues­day men shuld receaue the sacrament.

¶ In the yere of our lorde .C.lxivii.

¶ Eleuterius byshop of Rome ordened yt no meate shuld be forsaken thorown a [Page] supersticious name. That no mā shuld be purdowne from theyr, dygnyte. But if they be fyrst accused and then conuic­ted. He that is gyltye & absent shall not be condempned though hys acccusor cal vpon hym. Vnder this byshop ye Bry­taynes receyued the fayth of Christ.

¶ In the yere of our lorde .C.lxxxxii.

¶ Victor byshop of Rome ordeyned that Ester day shuld be Celebrate on the son­day after the .xiiii daye of the mone of the .i. Moneth. Also yt euery mā of necessite requyred myght be baptysed whē he please. And that those yt wolde not be recō ­syled from theyr olde malyce, they shuld be excōmunicate from the seruyce of god.

¶ In the yere of our lorde .CC.iii.

¶ Seuerinus ordeyned yt the sacrament shuld be cōsecrate in a chalyce of Glasse & not of tre, as a fore. ☞ Also that Chri­stē people shuld rescyue the sacramēt on Ester day at ye laest. And yt prestes shuld be wt the Byshop when he saythe masse

☞In the yere of our lorde .CC.xii.

☞ Calixtus ordeyned, that the ymbryng dayes shulde be fasted that whete, wyne & oyle myght be encrease. ☞ And that those whiche shuld take orders shuld ab­stayne from wyues for euer, Item that a byshop shuld not be cōsecrated but yf he were lawfully chose. That prestes shold not be accused by defamed ꝑsons. That accusars of clarckes, yf they be suspecte enemies, they shal not be admitted in the courte or lawe. ☞ Also that the hurters of pylgryms shulde be accursed.

☞ Fabian ordeyned the holy oyle shulde be reuyued euery yere. And yt the olde shulde be brēt on maūdy thursday. That crysten people shulde receyue the sacra­ment thryse a yere. Also that no man shulde loke to ye prestes lyuing but shuld herken to his doctryne & those thynges that he mynystrythe. In that clarkes that are gylte shulde be punyshed by the [Page] lawe of the chyrche. Item that those yt reproueth wrōgfully and clark, shulde be a cursed. That no man shulde take a wyfe within .v. degre of bloude.

☞ Cornelius ordeyned yt no man shuld constrayne a preste to swere but in a matter Of the fayth. That those which are put vnto theyr others, by the order of the lawe shuld be fastynge.

☞Stephanus ordeyned ye clarkes shuld not were the vestamentes of the churche but in the ministracion of holy thynges. Item those yt take away ye goodes of the church shalbe cōdempned as mēslayers. Those that haue lefte the fayth, and are penytēt shal not be baptysed agayne.

☞ Sixtus ordeyned yt a preest shulde sa­crifyse vpon a halowed altare & he gaue vnto saynt Laurence the treasure of the churche to dystrybute.

In the yere of our lord .CC.lxxiii.

Helix ordeyned holy dayes yerely in remēbraunce of martyrs. He renewed consecraciōs & halowynges of chyrches that prestes shulde not saye masse but in holy place onely.

In the yere of our lord .CC.lxxvii.

EVticianus ordeyned that those yt geld thēselues, & those yt are bug­gerers & abbates yt presume to defyle virgyns shuld be excōmunicat. That newe frutes shuld be blessed vpon ye auter Itē yt a marter shuld be beryed in a cope.

Catus ordeyned that they shuld assend by vii. distynet orders to be a byshop. Itē yt no lay man nether heretycke nor vn­baptysed mā shal cal a clarck to ye lawe.

Marcellinus for feare of payne cōmitted Idolatrye & afterwarde dyd penaūce and ye time ther was xvii.M.i.xxx. dais marterd by Dyoclesyan the Emperour.

Marcellus was ye fyrst that gaue ty­tles to paryshes and dyoces in Rome.

Eusebius ardeyned yt those that takyth away any thynge praynyng to ye church shall restore .x. tymes asmoche agayne, Itē that prestes shuld not be accused but of men of gret grauyte. The workers of witchcraft & defamed persons shall not be receaued as witnesses. Also a woman yt is spoused to her husband may departe from hym & go into Religion.

Melacides ye last marter from Peter ordeyned yt no man shuld fast on sonday or thursdaye. That no man shuld be condempned of suspicion before the dede be proued. That a clarck shuld abstayne frō seculer busines.

In the yere of our lorde .CCC.xvii.

Syluester Ordeyned yt the holy oyle shuld be consecrated by a byshop. And ye [Page] chyldren beyng baptysed shuld be confyrmed by a byshop. Item yt prestes shulde a noynt syk folkꝭ. ¶Damasus ordeyned that the confite or shuld be sayd at ye beginnyng of ye masse. Also he caused fyrst ye deuision of ye quere ye one shuld syng on verse on ye one syde and ye other on ye other syde. And yt gloria patti shuld be songe at the ende of euery [Page] psalme. Also yt those ye brek his canon lawe shulde be counted as blasphemers of ye spirit. He gaue autorite to .s. ¶ Siricius ordeyned yt orders shuld be gyuen dyuerse tymes of the yere. And yt Prystes shuld be made by the bysshoppꝭ only. And yt prystes shuld not dwell wt no womē, But they were nye kynne to them. Also yt no man Maryinge a wy­dowe shulde not be preste.

¶ In the yere of our lorde .CCCC.v.

¶Anastasius, ordeyned yt men shuld stā de vp at ye readyng of the gospel & here it in remembraunce. Item that those yt lacked any of theyr members, or partꝭ of theyr bodyes shuld not be made prystꝭ.

Also he ordeyned fyrste the Order of saynct Hierome.

Innocentius ordeyned ye Saterdayes shuld be fasted. A church ons halowed shuld not be halowed agayn. Item that a statute made of the clargy without the cōsent of the byshop shulde be as voyde. Item that it shalbe counted Simonye to them that solde Prebendes, dignityes or of holy Oyle. Itē on Solempne feastes those that are Christen people shuld afore that they receyue the sacramēt gyue eche other a kysse of peace.

In the yere of our lorde .iiii.C.xxiiii.

Sozinus ordeyned yt the paschall ta­per shulde be halowed in euery paryshe on Ester euen. Item that clarkes shulde not drynke in tauernes. Item yt prē ­tyses shuld not take orders.

In the yere of our lord .iiii.C.xxxiii.

Bonefacius ordeined yt no man shuld be made a preste before .xxx. yere & that ye seruaunte that ranne awaye from hys master shuld not be receyued to a pryste.

In the yere of our lorde .iiii.C.xliii.

Iohn ye .i. ordeyned yt the Emperours shuld be subiectꝭ vnto ye byshopes & not to bere rule ouer thē. In yt tyme the holynes of Bn̄d [...]e was ī ye exstemaciō which ordeined the Relion of monkes. Whiche thenseforth was deuyded in many hous­holdes.

☞Pelagius .i. ordeyned yt prestes shuld say theyr canonicall houres dayly. And that ī the tyme of lent they shulde not ce­lebrate before they had sayd ye last hour. And yt ther shal not be admitted ī the spirituall courte no lybell of accusation on lesse the party accused be present. Also yt seismatykes & heretikes shuld be oppressed with the seculer power.

And yt the last wyll of thē yt died shuld be kept & ratified. And yt the .iiii. dayes before the fyrst sonday intent shuld be fasted, Also yt mē maryed to ii. wiues & vserers shuld not be admitted to be prestꝭ. Itē yt mē leuing theyr wiuꝭ wt cōsent yt their wiues ought thē to en­ter īto religiō, And also wemē leuīg their husbāde with cōsent their husbādꝭ ought also to enter īto religiō. Boniface ye .iii. ordeyned yt the corporas cloth at ye cōsecratiō shuld belayde abrode by ye prest & that none shuld be elected ī ye place of the dede byshop, But ye .iii. day after hys deth, And yt nether for fauor nor for no mony. And yt the electiō shulde be made bothe of ye clargy & lay people, and yt it shuld be ratyfyed by chassent of ye by­shop. This man by ye cōsent of Focas obtayned agaīst ye patriarke of cōstātinople That ye see of Peter shulde be the hede of the churche.

Theodatꝰ ye .i. ordeyned yt no mā shulde mary that Mayde that his father had bē god father to. ¶This man loued ye clar­gye and pore people ardently.

Boniface the .v. ordeyned that those the came to the church for socor, shuld not be taken from them with violēce. And that those ye cōmitted Sacrilege shuld in euery place be cōuicted & accursed. And ye te­stamentes made by ye Princes shuld by all maner of wayes stāde in ful strength.

Honoriꝰ ye .i. ordeyned yt the names of ye excomūicat shuld be opēly denoūsed, this mā did restore many churchꝭ & church yerdes. And he apointed lawes to ye sarasēs.

Iohn̄ the .iiii. ordeyned that any inua­ded or toke away the godes of the church He shuld restore .iiii. folde.

Theodorus Ordeyned the halowynge of waxe as Sozinus writyth of hym, & bylded vp .ii. Celles in Rome.

Martyne ye .i. ordeyned yt they shuld not haue no lōg here. And yt ye mā & his wyfe shulde be blest before they laye together. And yt the byshop euery yere shuld make creme & send it to euer [...] parishe of ye diocꝭ.

Egenius the .ii. ordeyned that the By­shop shuld haue prysons, to ponyshe ye of fenders of the Clarge. Also that ye prestꝭ howses shulde be bylded nere ye churche.

Vitilianus made ye order of ye churches He ordeyned songe & added to ye organs.

Theodarus ye .ii. bylded churches. He ordeined many suffrages to put away many wonders yt hapened ī those dayes.

Leo ye .ii. ordeyned Baptyme to be done in vrgent necessite. He ordeyned ye Pax to be borne about to the people beyng present a Masse. Also that the eleccion of ye clergy of Rauēna which made hymselfe Equall wt Rome shuld not be in strēgth but yf ye byshop of Rome, dyd a proue in Thys man ordeyned the psalmody, and he brought ye hymmꝭ īto aswere tewne.

Sergius ye .i. ordeyned Agnus dei to be sayd of ye preste in ye Masse before ye breakyng of ye hoste, which peeꝭ of ye hoste He declared ye significatiō ī a certayne canō. This mā brought ye church of Aquila to his dutie, which did lytel alowe ye .v. coū sell.

Constantyne ye .i. ordeyned yt the Ima­ges of saynctes whiche we rased oute by Philyp in the tempyll of Sophye shulde agayne be paynted in the porche of saynt Peter, And he ordyned that ye name of thy Heretyke Emperour shuld not be re­ceyued nother in open nor pryuate wry­tinges nether in Brasse, Syluer or lead,

¶ In the yere of our lorde .vii.C.xiiii.

Gregory ye .ii. cōuerted ye germaynes to ye fayth by his diligēce. He excōmūicated Leo ye Emperour to be an heretike. Here payred ye churchꝭ & the wallꝭ of ye Citie.

In the yere of our lorde .vii.C.xxxi.

Gregory ye .iii. ordeyned the Images of saynctes to be worshypped. And them to be Excōmunicated yt dyd violate theym. This man wt a counsell of a. M Bysho­pes, & with thassent of the clargye, & also of the [Page] people dyd depryue Leo bothe of his Impery and also of the company of good mē Because Leo had rased out of ye chuches the forsayde Images and broke thē downe. He decked ye churches & restored mo­nasteries. And he added to the Canon of the masse these wordes (Quorū hodie so­lemnitas. &c.) But they do not vse those wordes now in ye Secretes of the masse.

Sacharias ordeyned ye men of ye clarge shuld were no seculer habytes.

Steuen ye .iii. ordeyned yt no man shuld be made a bishop excepte he were wtin or­ders before. And yt ymages which were taken away by ye coūsell of Cōstantyne: shulde be restored to the church agayne-

Pascalis the .i. ordeyned that no seculer man shulde presume to take a benefice.

Sergius the .ii. (whiche was called the mouth of a Swyne) for ye vnclene soūde of his voyce. He toke to hym this name Sergius, And of this mā al other byshopes of Rome hath taken occasion to chaū ge their name. Thys man ordeyned that all sayntes and holy mē shuld be buryed Soūteously with Tombes and shrines.

Leo the .iiii. ordeyned yt a byshop shuld not be accused wt lesse thā .lxxii. witnessꝭ

¶In the yere of our Lorde .viii.C.liiii.

Iohn̄ the .viii. a woman (as they say) very well lerned. She shewed herselfe outwardly to be a man, And she being great with chylde was delyuered in profession in the rogation dayes, and strayght way she dyed: and her chylde with her.

Benedicte the .iii. ordeyned yt the clarge shuld synge Dirige for theyr superiours [Page] and agayne the superiours to synge dirī ge for the clargye.

Gregory the fyfte ordeyned that only ye Germaynes shulde chose the Emperour for he was a Saxon borne.

Syluester the second was made byshop of Rome by Dyuelyshe congeringe and He asked the deuyll how longe he shuld lyue and he shewed hym so longe as he came not to Hierusalem. And Syluester saying masse in a chapell of ye holy crosse called Hierusalem, dyd perseaue his laste day was come, and than he shewed how he was made byshop by congeracion.
