            <p>Users should be aware of the process of creating the TCP texts, and therefore of any assumptions that can be made about the data.</p>
            <p>Text selection was based on the New Cambridge Bibliography of English Literature (NCBEL). If an author (or for an anonymous work, the title) appears in NCBEL, then their works are eligible for inclusion. Selection was intended to range over a wide variety of subject areas, to reflect the true nature of the print record of the period. In general, first editions of a works in English were prioritized, although there are a number of works in other languages, notably Latin and Welsh, included and sometimes a second or later edition of a work was chosen if there was a compelling reason to do so.</p>
            <p>Image sets were sent to external keying companies for transcription and basic encoding. Quality assurance was then carried out by editorial teams in Oxford and Michigan. 5% (or 5 pages, whichever is the greater) of each text was proofread for accuracy and those which did not meet QA standards were returned to the keyers to be redone. After proofreading, the encoding was enhanced and/or corrected and characters marked as illegible were corrected where possible up to a limit of 100 instances per text. Any remaining illegibles were encoded as &lt;gap&gt;s. Understanding these processes should make clear that, while the overall quality of TCP data is very good, some errors will remain and some readable characters will be marked as illegible. Users should bear in mind that in all likelihood such instances will never have been looked at by a TCP editor.</p>
            <p>The texts were encoded and linked to page images in accordance with level 4 of the TEI in Libraries guidelines.</p>
            <p>Copies of the texts have been issued variously as SGML (TCP schema; ASCII text with mnemonic sdata character entities); displayable XML (TCP schema; characters represented either as UTF-8 Unicode or text strings within braces); or lossless XML (TEI P5, characters represented either as UTF-8 Unicode or TEI g elements).</p>

            <p>I was induced to compoſe this short treatiſe of the Sacrament of Confirmatio<g ref="char:cmbAbbrStroke">̄</g> for two Cauſes: The one was to ſupplie the Bishop of Chalcedon his want of opportunitie ſuffi<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>ciently
<pb facs="tcp:510:3"/> to inſtruct thoſe to whome hee miniſtreth this Sacrament; For the holy Councell of Trent com<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>maunding Bishops, that at what times they adminiſter this Sacrament, they should declare to the people the dig<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>nitie and profits thereof, that thereby they may come more worthely to receiue it, and that hee hath ſeldome opportunitie to make any ſuch ſufficient declaration: I thought it fit to ſupplie the want of his Speech, by this my writing. The other was to inſtruct both thoſe who had receiued this Sacrament

               <head>CHAPTER. I. <hi>How it is certaine, that the Sa<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>crament of Confirmation is ne<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>ceſſarie, or not neceſſa<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>rie: and how it is doubtfull.</hi>

                  <seg rend="decorInit">E</seg>VERY thing that is neceſſarie, is ne<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>ceſſarie to ſome end or purpoſe. Now there bee two ends, to
<pb n="2" facs="tcp:510:8"/> which one may thinke that Confirmation is neceſſarie: The one is <hi>Salus,</hi> (as diuines <note place="margin">Two ends to which Confirma<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>tion may bee thought neceſſarie</note> ſpeake) that is, Chriſtianitie or Saluation: The other is <hi>Perfectio Salutis,</hi> that is perfe<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>ction or Co<g ref="char:cmbAbbrStroke">̄</g>plement of Chri<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>ſtianitie or of Saluation; For as in our corporall life, wee bee firſt Children, and after perfect or compleate men: So in our ſpirituall life wee bee firſt Children and (as S. Peeter ſpeaketh, <hi>Like Infants</hi>

                  <hi>new borne,</hi> weake and imper<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>fect, and after by ſpirituall growth and ſtrenght we be<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>come perfect and compleate Chriſtians.</p>

               <p> And as there are theſe two ends, to which it may bee thought that Confirmation is neceſſarie: So alſo there are two kinds of neceſſities <note place="margin">Two kinds of neceſſitie.</note> by which likewiſe it may bee thought that it is neceſſarie to either of them; For ſome things are neceſſarie (as Phy<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>loſophers and diuines ſpeake) <hi>neceſsitate medij,</hi> as a neceſſarie meanes, becauſe it is the onely meane to attaine vnto ſuch an ende; So is a ship neceſſarie to trauell by Sea, food for to liue, and the like; Other things are neceſſarie <hi>neceſsitate praecepti</hi> by neceſſitie of precept or commaund,
<pb n="4" facs="tcp:510:9"/> which are not ſimply neceſ<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>ſarie of them ſelues, but one<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>ly becauſe they are co<g ref="char:cmbAbbrStroke">̄</g>maun<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>ded; So to faſt in Lent, to communicate at Eaſter, and the like, are neceſſarie to Sal<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>uatio<g ref="char:cmbAbbrStroke">̄</g>, becauſe they are com<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>maunded by the Church.</p>
               <p>Now certaine it is and vn<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>doubted, <note place="margin">Confir<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>mation not neceſ<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>ſarie as a neceſſarie meane to Salua<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>tion.</note> that Confirmation is not neceſſarie <hi>neceſsitate me<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>dij,</hi> as a neceſſarie meane to Saluation, becauſe it is not inſtituted by our Sauiour as a neceſſarie meane to ſaue vs; For as Saint Thomas and di<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>uines <note place="margin">

               <p>ALbeit Chriſt, in the time of his mortall life, did not giue the Sacrament <note place="margin">VVhy Chriſt did not giue the Sacra<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>ment <gap reason="illegible" resp="#APEX" extent="1 letter">

                     </gap>f Confirma<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>tion in his life time.</note> of Confirmation; becauſe (as ſaint Thomas ſaith. 3. p. qu. 72. art. 1.) <hi>in this Sacrament is giuen the Fulnes of the holy</hi>

                  <hi>Ghoſt which was not to bee giuen before Chriſts Reſurrection and Aſcenſion, according to that of S. Iohn.</hi> 7. <hi>The Spirit was not yet giuen, becauſe</hi> IESVS <hi>was not yet glorified.</hi> Neuertheleſſe did hee both inſtitute this Sacra<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>ment, as hee did all the reſt, and alſo as ſaint Fabian Pope and Martyr ſaith Epiſt. 2. <hi>On Mandate Thurſday: (As our Predeceſſors receiued of the Apoſ<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>tles and they haue left to vs) hee</hi>

               <p>Now after his Aſcenſion, <note place="margin">Grace of Confir<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>mation firſt giuen on whit ſonday.</note> vppon the day of Pentecoſt or Whitſonday, hee beſto<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>wed vppon his Apoſtles and diſciples, in a miraculous and extraordinarie manner, and in an abundant degree, the grace of this Sacrament, without the Sacrament it ſelfe; For (as the holy Fathers <note place="margin">See infra cap. 8.</note> and diuines teach) that grace which was then giuen them, was the grace of the Sacra<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>ment

               <p>Not long after this, and aſſoone as the Apoſtles had vnderſtood, that the Samari<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>tans, <note place="margin">The Apo<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>ſtles care to giue Confir<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>mation.</note> had bene baptized by Philipp the Deaco<g ref="char:cmbAbbrStroke">̄</g>, ſtraight<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>way they ſent two of the cheefeſt Apoſtles, ſaint Peeter and ſaint Iohn, of purpoſe to confirme them, thinking that a iourney worthy of ſuch greate perſonages; <hi>Who</hi> (ſaith ſaint Luke, Act. 8.) <hi>did impoſe their hands vppon them, and they receiued the holy Ghoſt:</hi>

Pauls care of the ſame.</note> was carefull to enquire of Chriſtians, whether they had receiued the holy Ghoſt, and when they anſwered that they had not, <hi>hee impoſed hands vppon them, and the holy Ghoſt came vppon them:</hi> Actorum 19. Both which places the holy Fathers and Diuines doe vn<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>derſtand of the Sacrament of Confirmation. And hereby vvee ſee, both the Cuſtome, and the greate care the holy Apoſtles had to confirme the Chriſtians, lett vs ſee the like of the holy Bishops theire Succeſſors.</p>

Fabian Pope and Mar<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>tyr Epiſtola 2. hauing ſaid (as before is related) that Chriſt taught the Apoſtles to make Chriſme, and that it is to bee renewed euery yeare, addeth: <hi>Theſe things vvee receiued of the Apoſtles and theire Succeſſors, and vvee commaund</hi>

Vnleſſe we will thinke, that the Apoſtles had leſſe care of Chriſtians when they are in greater daunger, then when they are in leſſe. But this Eccleſiaſticall precept of Confirmation, which wee haue proued out of the ex<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>preſſie ſayings of ſome Fa<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>thers, lett vs alſo proue out of diuers other ſayings of theirs.</p>

               <p>And why should theſe ho<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>ly Councells and Fathers ſay that Confirmation <hi>is neceſſa<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>rie to Chriſtians,</hi> that <hi>Chriſtians muſt bee confirmed;</hi> that <hi>vvith<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>out death Confirmation is not rightly ſeparate from Baptiſme:</hi> that without Confirmation <hi>vvee are not full Chriſtians, not properly Chriſtians,</hi> and ſimply <hi>not Chriſtians,</hi> vnleſſe they

Leo bewaileth want of Confir<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>mation.</note> 73. al. 75. greately be<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>waileth, that in a place the hallowing of Chriſme had failed, which thing was to bee bewailed in England for many yeares; And the Sea Apoſtolicke hath bene ſo loath, that Chriſtians should want Confirmation, that ſometimes shee hath giuen leaue to Prieſts to confirme for want of Bishops, albeit many graue Diuines thinke, that ſuch power cannot bee giuen to Prieſts; And like<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>wiſe,

               <p>To the former ſayings of Fathers wee may add, that Hugo de ſanct. Victore (rela<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>ted by ſaint Thomas 3. p. q. 72. art. 8.) affirmeth. <hi>It would</hi>

                  <hi>bee moſt daungerous, if one should depart out of this life without Co<g ref="char:cmbAbbrStroke">̄</g>

C. Ignorantia: relateth theſe wordes of an other Pro<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>uinciall Canon. <hi>Fiue Sacrame<g ref="char:cmbAbbrStroke">̄</g>ts (debent) muſt bee receiued of all Chriſtians, to witt Baptiſme,</hi>

                  <g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>firmed before one was ſea<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>uen yeares old: And (as be<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>fore wee ſaid) a generall Cu<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>ſtome bindeth as well as a lawe; So that in England there bee two ſtrong bonds to bind Catholicks to bee

Seſſio. 14. cap. 3. <hi>Neither can the contempt of ſo greate a Sacrament bee with<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>out greate ſinne and iniury to the holy Ghoſt;</hi> And doubtleſſe the ſame is of the contempt of Confirmation: And though <hi>contempt</hi> ſtrictly taken bee more then <hi>negligence,</hi> for as Sotus in 4. d. 7. q. vn. art. 8. <note place="margin">VVhat Contempt is proper<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>ly.</note> ſaith; <hi>Contempt, as the word ſoundeth, is to make no account of athing, and to reiect it as if it were nothing,</hi> yet in this mat<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>ter they ſeeme to confound it

                  <hi>it were Sinne not to receiue this Benefite of God;</hi> And againe: <hi>It is ſinfull negligence to deferre this Sacrament beyond that age</hi> (of 12. or. 14. yeares.) <hi>For the right order is not to receiue the Eucha<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>riſt before Confirmation, as was the Cuſtome in the primatiue Church;</hi> And Bellarmin l. 1. de Sacram. c. 22. <hi>Who negle<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>cteth to receiue this Sacrament, ſinneth.</hi> For if there bee a Sinne not to receiue this Sacrame<g ref="char:cmbAbbrStroke">̄</g>t, there is a precept thereof, and if there bee a precept, the

               <p>As for the opinion of the <note place="margin">Canoniſts ſay it is a mortall Sinne not to be con<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>firmed.</note> Canoniſts in this matter, thus writeth Armilla verb. Sacra. <hi>The Sacrament of Baptiſme, Con<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>firmation, Co<g ref="char:cmbAbbrStroke">̄</g>munion, Penance, and Extreme Vnction according to the Canoniſts (as writeth Palu<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>danus</hi>
                  <pb n="69" facs="tcp:510:41"/> 4. <hi>ſent. d.</hi> 7.) <hi>are neceſſarie, that is, vnder precept, ſo that who can receiue them, and will not, doth Sinne mortally.</hi> Thus wee ſee, by the teſtimonie of Armilla and Paludanus, what is the generall opinion of Cano<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>niſts, and by the Confeſſion alſo of Sotus, what is the ge<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>nerall opinion of Diuines, <note place="margin">In dubijs tutior pars eſt eligen<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>da.</note> whoſe opinion it is ſecureſt to followe, eſpecially ſeeing, there is ſo litle labour to re<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>ceiue this Sacrament, and ſo greate good gotten by it, as shall hereafter appeare.</p>
               <p>Moreouer, ſith (as is be<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>fore ſaid) all agree, that not to receiue this Sacrament

               <p>If any obiect, that if not to care to receiue a Sacrame<g ref="char:cmbAbbrStroke">̄</g>t, were to contemne it, the<g ref="char:cmbAbbrStroke">̄</g> not <note place="margin">Differe<g ref="char:cmbAbbrStroke">̄</g>ce beetweene Confirma<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>tion and Orders and Ma<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>trimonie.</note> to care to receiue the Sacr<hi rend="sup">ent</hi>. of Orders or of Matrimonie, were to contemne them: I

               <head>CHAPTER. VII. <hi>Of the effects of Confirmation common to all that receiue it.</hi>
               </head>
               <p>AS touching all other Sacraments, ſo alſo co<g ref="char:cmbAbbrStroke">̄</g>
                  <g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>cerning Confirmation, there are ſome that receiue it wor<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>thily, and ſome vnworthily, and in both ſorts it worketh ſomeeffects, and of theſe wee vvill ſpeake in this Chapter, and in the next of thoſe vvhich it vvorketh in thoſe that receiue it vvorthily.</p>

               <p> The firſt effect which it <note place="margin">Spirituall affinitie in Confirma<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>tion.</note> worketh in all that receiue it, is ſpirituall affinitie; this it doth by the inſtitution of the Church, which ordaineth that there shall bee a ſpiri<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>tuall affinitie, betweene the Bishop that confirmeth, and the perſon confirmed and his Parents, and alſo betweene the Godfather or Godmo<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>ther, and the partie confir<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>med and his Parents; which affinitie is of the ſelfe ſame nature, of which that is, which is contracted in Bap<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>tiſme, and in like ſort hinde<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>reth Mariage betweene the<g ref="char:cmbAbbrStroke">̄</g> in whome it is, as that doth.</p>

               <p> The ſecond, is a ſpirituall <note place="margin">Charac<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>ters of a perfect Chriſtian and Soul<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>dier.</note> and inuiſible Character, which it imprinteth in the Soule of him that receiueth it, and therewith marketh him in the ſight of God and his Angells, for a Souldier of Chriſt, who <hi>ex officio,</hi> and by ſpeciall profeſſion, is to con<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>feſſe his faith eue<g ref="char:cmbAbbrStroke">̄</g> before per<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>ſecutors. For as in Baptiſme there is imprinted in the Soule, a ſpirituall Character, where with wee are marked for Children or Subiects of God, and in Orders an other, where with they that receiue it, are marked for Chriſts Officers in his Church: So

               <p>The third effect which Confirmation worketh in all that receiue it, is that in the face of the Church and be<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>fore men, it maketh vs abſo<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>lute and co<g ref="char:cmbAbbrStroke">̄</g>pleate Chriſtians,

And therefore, as a man better deſerueth the name of a man, then a Child doth: So a confirmed Chri<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>ſtian better deſerueth the name of a Chriſtia<g ref="char:cmbAbbrStroke">̄</g>, then one who is not confirmed; More<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>ouer, <note place="margin">Chriſte name of Chriſme and conſe<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>quently Chriſtian.</note> though thoſe who are baptized, deſerue the name of Chriſtians, ſo farrefourth as <hi>Chriſtian</hi> ſimply ſignifieth a diſciple and me<g ref="char:cmbAbbrStroke">̄</g>ber of Chriſt

                  <g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>ſequently the name of <hi>Chri<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>ſtian</hi> according to the perfect and entire deriuation thereof from the name of Chriſt, doth alſo ſignifie a <hi>Chriſmed or anointed diſciple of Chriſt:</hi> ſo the name of <hi>Chriſtian</hi> accor<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>ding to its complete and per<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>fect ſignification, doth agree onely to thoſe that are con<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>firmed; And for this cauſe ſaint Cyrill and the Councell of Orleans before cited, ſaid, <note place="margin">Supra.                   <hi>As Chriſt is ſo called of Chriſme: So all that are confir<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>med, are thereby made partakers both of an ointment and name.</hi> The like haue ſaint Cyprian, ſaint Proſper, and ſaint Au<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>ſtin before cited; Further<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>more, by Baptiſme wee are but admitted into the Citie of God, but by Confirma<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>tion wee are alſo admitted into his Campe, and thought worthie to fight for his cauſe.</p>

Chriſt by his power of Excellency (whereby hee is not tyed

               <p>Thirdly, it not onely gi<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>ueth <note place="margin">Confir<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>mation giueth a Sacramen<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>tall grace.</note> habituall or iuſtifying grace, and the ſeauenfold gifts of the holy Ghoſt, but alſo it giueth a ſpeciall Sacra<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>mentall grace. For as it is a ſpeciall Sacrament, ſo alſo it giueth a Sacramenrall grace,

               <p>The third Prerogatiue is taken from the promiſe of <note place="margin">The grace of Confir<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>matio<g ref="char:cmbAbbrStroke">̄</g> the greate promiſe of God.</note> the effect of this Sacrament, which ſeemeth by Chriſts wordes Act. 1. to bee that greate

                  </note> the greate and continuall miracle, wherewith Allmigh<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>tie God in the beginning of his Church vouchſafed eſpe<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>cially to grace and authorize this Sacrament; For when the grace of this Sacrament was beſtowed vppon the Apoſ<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>tles act. 2. <hi>Suddainely there vvas made a ſound from heauen, as of avehement wind comming, and it filled the whole howſe where they were ſitting.                <p>The fifte Prerogatiue is, <note place="margin">God ap<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>pointeth his cheefe Officers for proper Miniſters of Confir<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>mation.</note> that the Holy Ghoſt, as hee appropriated his owne name to this Sacrament; ſo hee choſe the Apoſtles and Bis<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>hops theire Succeſſors who<g ref="char:cmbAbbrStroke">̄</g>e hee appointed for Gouer<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>nors of his Church, for the proper Miniſters of this Sa<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>crament. For whereas other Sacraments beſides Orders, can bee adminiſtred by infe<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>rior Prieſts, this can bee ad<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>miniſtred onely by a Bishop, where vppon in our English <note place="margin">VVhy Co<g ref="char:cmbAbbrStroke">̄</g>
                     <g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>firmation called Bi<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>shoping.</note> language it is called <hi>Bishoping</hi>
                  <pb n="113" facs="tcp:510:63"/> of the proper and peculiar Miniſter thereof; For thus defineth the Councell of Flo<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>rence; <hi>Whereas a ſimple Prieſt may giue the other vnctions, this none but a Bishop muſt giue, be<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>cauſe it is read of the Apoſtles a<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>lone (whoſe place Bishops haue) that they gaue the holy Ghoſt by impoſition of hands.</hi> The ſame is to bee ſeene. De Conſec. d. 5. Com. de his, Cap. Man. and d. 4. Conc. Presbiteri. Herevppon the holy Church ſaith in her prayer after Con<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>firmation: <hi>God who gaueſt the holy Ghoſt vnto the Apoſtles, and wouldſt haue him giuen to the reſt of the Faithfull by them and theire</hi>

And why God would haue Bishops to bee the proper and peculiar Miniſters of this <note place="margin">VVhy Bishops properly Officers of Con<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>firmation.</note> Sacrament: Saint Thomas 3. p. q. 72. giueth two reaſons. The one is becauſe men in this Sacrame<g ref="char:cmbAbbrStroke">̄</g>t are made Soul<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>diers

An other is, be<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>cauſe this Sacrament is to make me<g ref="char:cmbAbbrStroke">̄</g> perfect, and there<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>fore belongeth to Bishops, who are in State of perfectors and of diſpenſers of Gods myſteries; And herevppon ſaint Melchiades Epiſtola cit. inferreth, that becauſe Con<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>firmatio<g ref="char:cmbAbbrStroke">̄</g> can bee giuen one<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>ly by high Prieſts, that is Bishops, and Baptiſme can bee giuen by inferior Prieſts, therefore, <hi>Confirmation is more</hi>

                  <hi>then Baptiſme;</hi> And ſaint Tho<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>mas q. cit. addeth: <hi>Becauſe this Sacrament is of more efficacie to perfect in good, then Baptiſme, therefore it is committed to a more worthie Miniſter.</hi>
               </p>
               <p>The ſixt Prerogatiue of <note place="margin">The no<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>blenes of the matter of Confir<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>mation.</note> Confirmation is taken from the noblenes of the matter thereof: For whereas the matter of Baptiſme is ſimple water, and of Extreme Vn<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>ction, ſimple oile, the neceſ<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>ſarie matter of this Sacrame<g ref="char:cmbAbbrStroke">̄</g>t, is Chriſme, that is a mixt or Compound ointment of oile and Baulme, which is a moſt precious liquor and rare to
<pb n="117" facs="tcp:510:65"/> bee found; And (as Pliny ſaith l. 12. c. 25.) to bee pre<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>ferred before all odours; And beſides this, Chriſme muſt bee hallowed by a Bishop; For thus declareth the Coun<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>cell of Florence: <hi>The matter of Chriſme is made of oile, which ſignifieth the cleanenes of the Con<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>ſcie<g ref="char:cmbAbbrStroke">̄</g>ce, and of Baulme, which ſigni<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>fieth the odour of good fame, hal<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>lowed by a Bishop.</hi> And as Sua<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>rez ſaith, tom. 4. d. 33. art. 2. <hi>It is of neceſsitie of the Sacrament, that Chriſme bee hallowed of a Bishop, and it is the opinion of all Diuines few excepted;</hi> And in like manner Sotus in 4. d. 7. q. v. art. 2. ſaith: <hi>It is the gene<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>rall</hi>

                  <hi>opinion allmoſt of all, that the mixture of Baulme is of the Subſtance of the Sacrament;</hi> And it muſt needes argue a greate dignitie of this Sacrament, that the holy Ghoſt would require for the neceſſarie matter of it, ſo rare and pre<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>cious a liquor, and alſo the hallowing thereof by his cheefe Officiers, and Gouer<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>nours of his Church.</p>
               <p>The ſeauenth Prerogatiue <note place="margin">The no<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>blenes of the part whereon Confirma<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>tion is mi<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>niſtred.</note> is, that whereas other Sacra<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>ments are miniſtred in other parts of our bodie, Confir<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>mation can bee miniſtred onely in the cheefeſt and higheſt part thereof, that is,

Hath ſett as it were the very ignominie, and which Pagans de<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>ride, in the Seate of our bashfulnes; Doſt thou heere a man inſult vp<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>pon one that is shameles, and ſay, hee hath no forehead?                <p>THe firſt Ceremonie tou<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>ching <note place="margin">The attire of the Bis<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>hop when hee co<g ref="char:cmbAbbrStroke">̄</g>fir<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>meth.</note> the Bishop is, that hee bee attired with a Cope, Miter, Stole and Croſier, as is deſcribed in the Pontifi<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>call, and appointed by the S. Congregation de Epiſcopis, And an other Condition is, that the Bishop co<g ref="char:cmbAbbrStroke">̄</g>firme none but in place of his owne Iu<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>riſdiction,

               <p>As for thoſe that are to bee confirmed, the firſt Ce<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>remonie <note place="margin">Signe of the Croſſe.</note> is, that theire anoin<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>ting in the forehead bee done with the ſigne of the Croſſe, without which ſigne (as ſaint Auſtin ſaith) no Sacrament is rightly made. An other is, that the partie confirmed haue a Godfather or God<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>mother <note place="margin">Godfa<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>ther.</note> for to inſtruct the new Souldier of Chriſt, how hee is to vſe his ſpirituall

And none can bee Godfather or Godmo<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>ther in Confirmation to any, to whome they cannot bee ſuch in Baptiſme, Neither yet may the ſame bee God<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>father or Godmother to any in Confirmation, to whome they were ſuch in Baptiſme, but different Godfathers or Godmothers, are required in theſe differe<g ref="char:cmbAbbrStroke">̄</g>t Sacraments; A third Ceremonie is, that a Stroke on the Cheeke bee <note place="margin">A Stroke on the Cheeke.</note> giuen by the Bishop to the partie co<g ref="char:cmbAbbrStroke">̄</g>firmed, to admonish him thereby, that now hee

               <head>CHAPTER. XI. <hi>What diſpoſition is required in thoſe that receiue the Sacrament of Con<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>firmation.</hi>

               <p>AS for theire diſpoſi<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>tion in Soule, Firſt is <note place="margin">Diſpoſi<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>tion in Soule.</note> required, that they haue bene Chriſtened, be<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>cauſe Baptiſme is the foun<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>dation of all Sacraments, and particularly required be<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>fore Confirmation, becauſe this is the perfection and Complement of Baptiſme;
<pb n="126" facs="tcp:510:70"/> Secondly, they muſt bee in State of Grace, or at leaſt not guilty of the State of mortall Sinne, becauſe this Sacrament is inſtituted to increaſe Grace, not to remit ſinne though it doe ſo ſome<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>times, as is before related out of Saint Thomas; Thir<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>dly <note place="margin">In mind or purpoſe.</note> one muſt not receiue it for Curioſitie, or that hee may ſay hee hath bene Bis<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>hoped but with a purpoſe to become a perfecter Chri<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>ſtian then hee was before, more couragious in profeſ<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>ſing of Chriſts faith, and more thankfull to God, who beſtowed this greate Sacra<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>ment

               <head>CHAPTER. XII. <hi>How one may knowe whether hee hath worthily receiued the Sacrament of Con<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>firmation.</hi>

               <p>Seeing that Gods grace is neuer idle, except it bee our fault, but euer like fire, actiue and working, and that the grace of Confirmation, is of Children to make vs men in Chriſt, and of Ordinarie Chriſtians, to make vs cho<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>ſen and couragious Soul<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>diers; If wee conſider, what is
<pb n="129" facs="tcp:510:71"/> the differe<g ref="char:cmbAbbrStroke">̄</g>ce betwixt a Child <note place="margin">Differe<g ref="char:cmbAbbrStroke">̄</g>ce betwixt a Child and a man.</note> and a man, and betwixt an Ordinarie man, and a Soul<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>dier, wee shall gather whether wee haue receiued the grace of Confirmation or no. A Child therefore looketh one<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>ly to things preſent, a man looketh alſo to things to come: A Child onely atten<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>deth to paſtime and pleaſure, a man hath alſo co<g ref="char:cmbAbbrStroke">̄</g>ſideration of profit; A Child is readie to ſell his Inheritance for a trifle or bable, a man maketh more account of his Inheri<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>tance; A Child hath Childish behauiour, a man hath more mature and decent Cariage;
<pb n="130" facs="tcp:510:72"/> And in like manner, an Or<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>dinarie <note place="margin">Betwixt an Ordi<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>nary man <hi>&amp;</hi> a Soul<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>dier.</note> man is fearefull, not onely of greate, but alſo of ſmall dau<g ref="char:cmbAbbrStroke">̄</g>gers, and not one<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>ly of true daungers, but al<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>ſo of shadowes; a Souldier aduentureth vppo<g ref="char:cmbAbbrStroke">̄</g> Pikes, vp<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>pon Cano<g ref="char:cmbAbbrStroke">̄</g>s, vppon breaches, vppon what daunger ſoeuer preferring the honor of his profeſſion and quarrell of his Prince before his life.</p>
               <p>Wherefore if after Con<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>firmation <note place="margin">VVhen one hath vnwor<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>thely re<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>ceiued Confir<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>mation.</note> wee bee as Chil<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>dish in Conditions, as wee were before, thinke as much of this world and as litle of the world to come, as before wee did; bee as much giuen
<pb n="131" facs="tcp:510:72"/> to vaine paſtimes and plea<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>ſures, and as litle regard our ſpirituall profit as before, bee as readie to ſell our heaue<g ref="char:cmbAbbrStroke">̄</g>lie Inheritance for bables or tri<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>fles of this world as before wee were; and finally bee as Childish in our conuerſation and imperfections as before: And likewiſe if wee bee after Confirmation ſo fearefull of perſecutions and troubles for profeſſion of Chriſts true faith, as wee were before, it is greately to bee feared, that in vaine wee receiued, the grace of this Sacrament (as ſaint Paul ſpeaketh,) or ra<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>ther haue receiued the Sacra<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>ment,

               <p>But contrariwiſe if after wee bee confirmed, wee find <note place="margin">VVhen worthely.</note> our ſelues to thinkeleſſe of things preſent, and more of the world to come, of the e<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>ternall reward of vertue, and the euerlaſting punishment of Sinne, if wee ſcorne to ſell our heaue<g ref="char:cmbAbbrStroke">̄</g>lie Inheritance for trifles of this world, if wee bee more atte<g ref="char:cmbAbbrStroke">̄</g>tiue to our ſpi<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>rituall profit, and to laie vp treaſure in heauen, if our Conuerſation towards God and the world bee more diſ<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>creete, more mature, and graue, wee may iuſtly hope,
