A BRIEFE CHRONICLE AND perfect rehearsall of all the memorable actions happened not only in the Low-Countries, but also in Germanie, Italie, Fraunce, Spaine, England, Turkey, and other Countries, since the yeare of our Lord 1500. to this present yeare 1598.

year 1500 IN this yeare vppon the 25. day of the moneth of Fe­bruarie, the Emperour Charles the fift was borne in the towne of Gaunt in Flaunders, and in the same yere about the beginning of Sommer in Germany, and Luke-land, there sell Crosses of [...] [...]ers colours [...]u [...] of the [...] vpō [...] c [...]the [...].

year 1502 This yeare there was so great a death in Germany, that the common speech among them was, that all those on whom the bloody Crosses fell the yeare before should die, & at the same time there fell such a Haile by Vitupord in Brabrant, as the like was neuer seene, for the haile stones were as big as any Tennis ball.

year 1503 This yeare about the last of Iu­lie in the afternoone, all the Towne of Herderwicke was burnt in the space of three houres, so that there remained but three or foure houses, by the which fire there were smothe­red aboue 1500 men, and al that was within the houses kurnt.

The same yeare there were 200. houses burnt in Gorcum, and at Belle in Flaunders 500 houses.

year 1504 This yeare died Isabell Queene of Spaine.

year 1506 About the beginning of Ianua­rie [Page]preparation, was made to bring king Phillip and his wife into Spaine.

The same yeare when king Phillip was gone into Spaine, the Gelders began againe to war vppon Holland and Brabrant.

The same yeare about the 27. of September, died Phillip King of Spaine, and Granado presently after his Coronation.

year 1507 The Towne of Tienen was ta­ken by those of Gelder, with the aide of certaine Frenchmen, which was done vpon Saint Michaels day, and Turnholt spoyled.

year 1508 The 8. of September there arri­ued two ships at Teruere in Zealand, that came fro the Canaries, being the first ships that euer sailed out of Zea­land into Spaine, or the Islands, they were laden with Canarie Sugars, the ships went to Antwarpe, & there offered the Suger to be sold for two [Page]blankes a pound, but they could not sell it for so much.

The same yeare the Prince Charles with the Emperour Maximilian his Grandfather, made his entrye into Gaunt.

year 1509 On the xiiij. of October, there was an Earthquake in the Cittie of Constantinople that continued for the space of 18 dayes, so that the walles of the Citie, and all the houses vpon the Sea side fell downe, and the sea rose so high that it flowed ouer the walles of the Towne, and drowned aboue 14000. men.

year 1510 There happened wars betweene Hans King of Denmarke, and the Townes of Holland, zealand, & Freze­land, against certaine Townes lying vppon the sea: as, Lubecke, Rostocke, and their adherents, which continu­ed for the space of two yeares.

year 1511 The Emperour Maximilian held [Page]a Parliament of the states of Germa­nie at Ausberg, where there was [...] mā brought before him, that was so great that he eate a whole Calfe and a Sheepe raw at one meale, and yet was not suffized.

year 1512 There was such a Frost for the space of nine weekes, that in many places men went on foote vpon the salt water.

year 1513 This yeare Henry the right King of England, landed at Callis with a great power of men, & from thence entered into the frontiers of Flaun­ders, to make warre against the king of Fraunce, and at that time hee tooke Turwin & Turney and built a Castle in Turney.

year 1514 In the moneth of Ianuarie at Wittenberge in Saxonie there was three Sunnes seene in the aire, and in each Sunne a bloody sworde, the eleauenth of the same moneth, ware [Page]three Moones likewise seene.

The 7. of March, there were two raine bowes seene in the aire that stood backe to backe.

The same yeare in Layden there was a Child borne without a heade, with eyes & mouth in the brest, the armes and handes sticking close by the sides, and beneath it was round without legges or feet.

year 1515 The first of Ianuarie died Loys the eleueuth King of Fraunce.

The same yeare vppon satterday after candlemas day, Prince Charles entred into Andwarpe, and the next day after hee was inuested Duke of Brabrant, & receiued homage of al the 17 Prouinces.

year 1516 The 20. of October the order of the Golden Fleece was holden by Prince Charles at Brussels, and Leenuerden was besieged by the Guelders.

year 1517 The same yeare Charles Duke of Austria went into Spaine, there to bee Crowned king.

The same yeare the Frost was so great at Anwarpe that they went on foote ouer the Riuer of Scheld, & people roade with Horse, and wa­gons ouer the water into Brabrant.

year 1518 Prince Charles was crowned King of Spaine, within the towne of Valedolet, and by Vento about 1200. souldiers were slaine, that were na­med the Blacke company, the same yeare likewise there was an accorde made betweene Brabrant & Flanders, & Asperen was won from the Gel­ders.

year 1519 The 12 of Ianuarie died Maximi­lian the Emperour, Grandfather to Charles King of Spaine. The same yere in the month of February Fran­cis de Valois King of France, bought the towne of Tourney, of Henry king [Page]of England, for a great summe of mo­ney.

The same yeare wheate was sold for 12. stiuers, and Rie for 9. stiuers the quarter.

year 1520 This yeare vpon the 23. of Octo­ber Charles King of Spaine was elec­ted Emperour, and at Acen in Ger­manie hee receaued the Imperiall Crowne with great triumph.

The same yeare in the moneth of October there was three hundred houses burnt in Romerswald.

year 1521 The Emperour Charles in pre­sence of the King of Denmarke, laide the first stone of the foundation of the new quier of our Ladies church in Andwerpe, and spread the morter with a trowell.

The same yeare vppon the 19. of Nouember, there was 70. parishes in Holland ouerflowne and drowned by force of the water that entred in­to [Page]the land, and in the same moneth the Towne of Turney was besieged by the Emperour, and vpon Saint Andrewes day it was taken, since which time it hath bin holden vnder the king of Spaines subiection.

year 1522 The Island of Rodes was wonne by the Turke, and while it was be­sieged, there rose a muteny in And­warpe, the people saying that the ba­kers were the cause of the dearth of corne, which as then was verye deare, the like did the women of Ma­chelen and Brussels against their Ba­kers.

The same yeare in the moneth of Aprill, by Egmont in Holland there was a Fish taken, being of 80. foote long, & in greatnes correspondent, whereof they made 160. barrels of Fish besides the in trailes.

The same yeare vpon Palmeson­sonday, at Konlen, there were 2. chil­dren [Page]borne that cloue fast together, hauing two Heades, two Armes, and two feete, maiden Children, but dead borne. Vpon Saint Andrewes day the same yere a shippers wife o [...] Moerbeke baked a loafe of breade o [...] pure wheate, and when she drewe i [...] out of the Ouen, it was as blacke as pitch.

year 1523 This yere in the month of March there was so great a storme of thun­der & lightning, that there fel haile­stones as big as hennes egges, and of diuers colours.

The same yeare Rodes was againe wonne from the Turkes.

year 1524 This yeare there was 5. thou­sand houses burnt in the towne of Troy in Champania.

year 1525 This yeare during the besieging of Pauia, there rose great trouble in Germanie for preaching of the Gos­pell by Martin Luther.

The same yeare the Emperour Charles married the king of Portin­gales Daughter in the Towne of Ci­uill in Spayne.

year 1526 This yeare vppon the 25 of Fe­bruarie happened the fearefull and cruel battaile before Pauia, betweene the Emperour Charles and Francis king of Fraunce, wherin the king of Fraunce was taken prisoner.

year 1527 This yeare vppon the seauenth of May Phillip eldest son to Charles, the Emperour was borne at Vale­dolet in Spaine.

The same yeare the citie of Rome was besieged and taken by the Em­perour Charles, & the Pope taken prisoner, and in scaling the walles the Duke of Burbon was slaine.

year 1528 This yere vpon the 6. of March 1500. Guelders and many Citizens of Vtrecht, robbed and spoyled the Towne of Hage in Holland.

This yeare the Ilande Peru was first found out.

The same yeare vppon the first o [...] Iune, the Bishop of Vtrecht took [...] the towne of Vtrecht from the Guelders, slaying and imprisoning al [...] the Captaines and souldiers, drowning two Prebends, and beheadin [...] two Citizens.

year 1529 This yeare in the moneth of Iulie, the Frenchmen bearing, th [...] imperiall armes by subtiltie, took [...] the towne of Myllan.

The same yeare the Turke besieged Vienna with an Armie of tw [...] hundreth and fiftie thousand men.

The same yeare vppon Michaelmas day in the Euening, there die [...] many people of the sweating sicknes in Anwarpe.

year 1530 This yeare vppon the two [...] F [...]bruary the [...] Charles was crowned king of [...] bardie, [Page]within the towne of Bononia, where the Emperour kissed the Popes foote.

The same yeare vpon the twentie foure of March, the first stone of the foundation of the Court of Parlia­ment at Machelen was laide, which before was holden in the Pallace.

The same yeare vppon the fift of Nouember, foure hundred & foure Parishes were drowned in the low-Countries.

year 1531 This yeare the Emperour came to Collen, where Ferdinand his Bro­ther was crowned king of Romains.

The same yeare in the moneth of August, about Saint Laurence day, there was a Comet or Blazing star seene in the Low-Countries.

The same yeare and moneth, there was a fish taken vpon the Sea side in Holland, of sixtie eight [...] lo [...]g, [...], the [...] [Page]being thirteene foote broad.

The same yeare there happened an Earthquake in Portingale, that cōtinued for the space of eight daies, wherby 1050. houses within Lisbon fell downe. This earthquake hap­pened sometimes seauen or eight times a day, which made the Citi­zens for feare to leaue the towne, & lie in the open fields.

year 1532 A woman in Germanie (beeing great with child) killed her husband in the night time, and eate vp his left side with the arme, the rest of the dead body she boyled and kept it to eate.

The same yeare ouer the towne of Munster in Westfalie, there was a man all armed seene in the aire.

year 1533 This yeare Henry the eight king of England repudiated his wife Ka­therin, daughter of Ferdinand king of Spaine, and married his second wife [Page]called Anne of Bullen.

The same yeare Charles Duke of Guelderland, with fiue thousand men ouerthrew the power of the Earle of East Freesland, beeing of fifteene thousand men.

The same yere vpon the sixt of Oc­tober about twelue of the clocke at night, our Lady Church in Andwarp was burnt.

The same yeare the Towne of Bre­da was increased and made greater, by Henry Earle of Nassau, who like­wise founded the Castle.

year 1534 This yeare vpon our Lady euen in the month of March, there assem­bled great numbers of men & wo­men, both of Holland and Zealand, cal­led Anabaptists, that ment to passe through Harlame to goe to Munster but at blacke water they were taken and most of them burnt & punished.

The same yeare vpon Mary Mag­dalens [Page]day, there was more then one thousand houses burnt in Breda.

The same yeare Iohn van Layden, principall of the Anabaptists, with his company tooke the Towne of Munster, driuing out the Bishop and all the spiritualty: but beeing besie­ged by the Emperours troupe, and constraind by hunger, it was wonne from him. Iohn Van Layden with his associates were executed.

The same yeare, the towne Cler­uaus in France was spoyled with thunder, and in three houres cleane burnt.

The same yere the towne of Mon­talbon in France, was in three houres space cleane burnt & consumed with fire.

The same yeare the Anabaptists ranne naked through the towne of Amsterdam, and made great vprore.

year 1535 This yeare the Emperour with [Page]a great Armie sayled into Africa: where he draue the Barbarians out of the towne of Tunis, and restored Muleasses to his kingdome againe.

The same yeare a Gentleman be­ing aliue suncke into the earth, be­cause hee would not sell corne to the poore people at a reasonable price.

This yeare Henry the eight King of England, in despight of the Pope (because he would not consent to the deuorce of Queene Katherin) permit­ted Luthers doctrine in England.

year 1536 This yeare vppon the ninth of May the towne of Delft was burned and consumed with fire in the space of three houres. The same yere died Erasmus of Roterdam.

year 1537 This yere Francis king of France with fifty thousand men tooke the towne of Hedding,

The same yeare and moneth the Earle of Buren burnt the townes of [Page]Saint Paul and Mutterell, & besieged Turwin.

year 1538 This yeare Henry King of Eng­land, suppressed diuers Abbies and Cloysters in England, keeping all their lands to himselfe.

year 1539 This yeare vppon the second of May Isabell Queene of Spaine, and Empresse and Daughter to the king of Portingale died at Toledo in Spaine.

year 1541 This yeare the Emperour came out of Spaine, and at Gaunt hee pu­nished diuers rebels, and therein made a goodly Castle.

The same yere the Summer was so hote, that the Riuer of Rhiin in some places was dried vp, so that men past ouer it on foote, the like did the Riuer of Seine in Fraunce, and the Figges in Flanders were as ripe vppon the trees, as if they had come out of Spayne.

year 1542 This yeare vppon the twentie foure of Iune, warres were againe proclaimed betweene the Emperour and the King of France.

The same yeare in the moneth of Iulie vpon Saint Iames day, Martin Van Rosse, with great number of sol­diers came before Andwarpe, and thought to haue surpressed the towne, hee burnt all the Milles in Saint Willebordes field, and from thence he went into Lukeland, where he was forced with shame to retire.

The same yeare the Emperours Souldiers tooke Deuentre and other townes from the Duke of Guelder

The same yeare in Germanie after a raine, there fell great numbers of Grashoppers, which did great hurt to the fruits of the earth.

year 1543 This yeare the Emperour Charles, made Phillip his Son King of Spaine, and married him with [Page] Mary the King of Portingales daughter.

The same yeare the Emperour came out of Spaine and went into Guelderland, where vpon the eight of August he besieged Dueren, and willed them to yeelde it vnto him, but the townes men said that they feared not a Haddocke eater: which not long after the Emperour made them dearely to rue, and at the same time Amersford was taken by the Guelders.

year 1544 This yeare the Scots through­out all the Neatherland were pro­claimed enemies to the Emperour.

year 1545 This yere Charles, eldest Sonne to Phillip king of Spaine, was borne in Valedolet in Spaine.

year 1546 This yere the Emperour made warre against the Duke of Saxon, & the Lantgraue of Hessen.

The same yeare the Castle of [Page]Blākerhooke by Rammekens in Wal­cheren was made.

The same yeare vpon the eight of August, a lightning falling in the towne of Mechelen, blew vp a towre full of Gunpowder, and therwith slew at the least 1800. men, without any other hurt.

year 1547 This yeare vppon the twentie foure of Aprill the Emperour tooke the Duke of Saxon prisoner, and o­uerthrew his armie.

year 1548 This yere the Emperour came into Brabant, bringing with him the Duke of Saxon, and Phillip Lantgraue of Hessen prisoners.

year 1549 This yere Phillip king of Spaine came out of Spaine into the Low-Countries, where hee was inuested with the gouerment thereof.

The same yeare about the thirteen of October, Phillip king of Spaine made his entry into Gaunt, and not [Page]long after into Anwarpe.

The same yeare the next day after whitsonday, Katherine Demedices was Crowned Queene of France, within the towne of Saint Dennis.

year 1550 This yeare the Christians won Africa from the Turks and Moores, and then the passage from Brussels was begun to be digged.

The same yeare vpon the twentie two of October, the Emperour be­sieged Metz.

This yeare the Lantgraue of Hes­sen was discharged of his imprison­ment, year 1552 and set at libertie.

year 1553 This yeare the Emperours Ac­mie tooke the towne of Turwin which they spoyled, and rased the walles to the ground.

The same yeare the Emperour tooke the towne of Hedding.

year 1554 This yere Phillip king of Spaine, went into England to marrie Marie [Page]Queene of England.

year 1555 This yeare died Iane Queene of Spaine, mother to ye Emperor Charles.

year 1556 This yeare king Phillip held his first feast of the order of the Golden Fleece in Andwarpe.

The same yere vpon the eighteene of Februarie died Martin Luther.

The same yeare there was a Co­met seene, that continued for the space of fourteene dayes, betokening (as some iudged) the warres which at that time began in the low coun­tries.

The same yeare peace was pro­claimed betweene Phillip King of Spaine, and Henry king of France, and the same yere vpon the seauenteenth of September, the Emperour de­parted out of the Low Countries, to goe into Spaine.

year 1557 This yere vpon twelfe euen, the Frenchmen thought by treason to [Page]haue taken the towne of Doway, but they fayled of their purpose.

The same yeare Phillip King of Spaine with an army of Neatherlan­ders, besieged the towne of Saint Quintins, where the greatest part of the nobilitie of France came to raise the siege: but they were almost all taken and slaine, & vpon the twenty fiue of August after the towne was taken.

The same yere was a great dearth: for at Andwarp Rie was sold for viii, guilders, and wheat for xii. guilders the bushell.

year 1558 This yeare Ferdinand King of Hungarie and Bohemia was elected Emperour.

The same yeare the Frenchmen made a road into Flaunders, where they robbed and burnt Dunkerke.

The same yere vpon the fifteenth day of Iulie, Dunkerke was wonne [Page]againe from the Frenchmen, and all that were founde therein slaine and murthered.

The same yeare vpon the twenty one of September, the Emperour Charles died in Spaine, and vpon the eighteene of October, about 28. dayes after the death of the Empe­rour died Mary his Sister.

The same yere vpon the thirteene of December the Emperours Fune­rall was celebrated within Brussels.

year 1559 This yeare vpon the third of A­prill, peace was determined at Cam­braye between Phillip king of Spaine, and the French king, and king Phil­lip married the eldest Daughter of Henry King of France, and each of them redeliuered such townes as they held by force.

The same yeare at the mariage of king Phillip with the French Kings daughter, Henry king of France run­ning [Page]at tilt, was by a splinter Monsieur Mongomries Launce thr [...] into the eye, wherof vpon the twe [...] tie of Iuly after he died.

The same yeare vpon the twen [...] nine of Iuly, King Phillip celebrat [...] the order of the Golden Fleece the towne of Gaunt.

The same yeare the Dutchesse [...] Parma entred into the Neathe [...] lands for regent thereof.

The same yeare the Scots bega [...] to professe the Religion, and to lea [...] Papistrie.

year 1560 This yeare in the month of I [...] nuarie, king Phillip married Eliz [...] beth de Valois, daughter to Henry t [...] second king of France in the tow [...] of Guarda la Iura in Spaine.

The same yeare vppon the twent [...] sixe of Februarie, the first stone of t [...] foundation of the new towne hou [...] of Andwarpe was laid.

year 1561 This yere was the first time that shippes sayled in the newe Riuer of Brussels.

The same yeare diuers Bishops were newly erected in certaine townes in the Neatherlands.

The same yere the prince of Conde with diuers souldiers called Huge­nets, took certain townes in France: which hee did, by reason of certaine controuersies that happened among the Nobilitie, touching the obserua­tion of an edict of peace, made in the behalfe of the religion.

year 1562 This yeare the Duke of Guise in the name of Charles king of France, tooke the Citie of Roane, and execu­ted diuers of the Citizens.

year 1563 This yeare in the month of May ouer the towne of Callis, there was seene in the aire, two men armed, & all bloody to the knees, each of them bearing a shielde in his left hande, [Page]whereof the one had a Crosse, the o­ther a Lyon in it, and after them fol­lowed two women apparelled in white.

The same yere eight hundred hou­ses were burnt within the towne o [...] Poperin in Flaunders.

The same yeare there was so grea [...] a plague in England, that in Londo [...] there died eighteene hundred men i [...] one weeke.

This yere vpon the seuenteenth of May died Iohn Caluin. year 1564,

This yeare the Riuer of Shelde frose so hard, year 1565 that the people solde wine and beere vppon the riuer be­fore Andwarpe.

This yeare vppon the fift of A­prill, year 1566 the Nobilitie and Gentlemen of the Low Countries presented a petition to the Dutchesse of Parma, requesting the moderation of all placarts published touching Reli­gion. [Page]Vpon the fourth of Iuly Re­ligion began openly to bee preached in the Low Countries.

The same yeare vpon the twentie of August Images in Andwarpe and other places were throwne downe.

This yeare those of the Religi­on, year 1567 stoode armed vppon the Mare­brug, and the Papists at the bruge foot, one readie to set vpon the other, but by the Prince of Oranges means they were pacified.

The one and twentie of Aprill the Prince of Orange hauing had intelli­gence what was determined in Spaine touching the Low countries, and hauing aduertised the Earle of Egmont thereof, hee went into Ger­manie.

The twenty two of August ye Duke D'Alua with great triumph (althogh vnworthie) was receiued into Brus­sels.

The same yeare vpon the ninth of September, the Earles of Fgmont & Horne were committed to prison by the Duke of Alua, and kept in the Castle of Gaunt.

The seauenteenth of October, the Castle of Andwarpe was begun to be made.

The last of December, the Dut­chesse of Parma departed out of the Low Countries, and presently after the Duke of Alua, imprisoned diuers of the people that were of the Religi­on, and such as had borne armes.

This yeare in Easter Holidaies the Earle Lodwicke tooke the house of Weden in Freeseland and Dam, in the which enterprise, the Earle of Arenberch and diuers Spaniards were ouerthrowne.

The first of Iulie the Duke of Al­ua caused the two Lordes of Baten­borch, and sixteene gentlemen more [Page]to be beheaded.

The second of Iuly the Duke of Alua sent his forces into Freesland a­gainst the Earle Lodwicke that stay­ed for him, but because the Dutch Souldiers would not fight, he was forced to saue himselfe, and swam through the riuer of Embdze.

The fift of Iulie the Duke of Alua caused the Earles of Egmont & Horne to be beheaded in the towne of Brus­sels.

The tenth of September, the Earle of Bueren was taken in Louen, & con­ueied into Spaine.

In the moneth of October the Prince of Orange passed the Riuer of the Mase at Stochem with certaine Dutch forces, but the Dutchmen when they should fight, asking for mony, were the cause that hee could not fight with the enemie, whervp­pon [Page]he went into France, to ayde the Hugonots.

This yeare vpon the thirteenth of march, year 1569 the Prince of Conde being taken prisoner, was trayterouslie shot into the body by Montesquion.

This yeare vpon the sixteenth of Iuly, year 1570 the Duk of Alua published a generall pardon within the towne of Andwarpe.

The twentie fiue of September, Anna of Austria took shipping in Zea­land to sayle into Spaine.

This moneth Ladron gouernour of Valencia, was by his Souldiers committed Prisoner, because they would haue the pay of nyne compa­nies of souldiers, the mony where of he had played at dice, which he pro­mised them to satisfie, and to the same end he gotte diuers of them to And­warpe, where he committed and exe­cuted [Page]at least two & forty of the prin­cipall mutiners.

This yere Harmon Ruyter tooke the Castle of Loeuestein, year 1571 which the Spaniardes not long after tooke from him againe, and hanged both him, & all his companie.

In the moneth of December, the mony that the Duke of Alua should haue receaued out of Spaine was ta­ken by the Queene of Englands ships and carrried into England.

This yeare in the moneth of Fe­bruarie, year 1572 the Duke of Alua sought to haue a tribute of the tenth penny, but he could not obtaine it.

The first of Aprill, the Brill was taken by Lumine, and not long after Flushing and Enchuysen yeelded to the Prince of Orange against the Duke of Alua.

The ninth of Aprill, Bossu with certaine Spaniards, desired to passe through Roterdam, where traiterou­sly he murthered diuers Burgers, & tooke in Delfeshauen.

The twentie foure of May, Earle Lodowicke tooke Bergen in Henegon, which the Duke of Alua presently be­sieged, and tooke Bergen & Valechyn againe.

In August the Prince of Conde with his armie beeing at Duesborge passed ouer the Rhein and tooke Ru­ermonde, & Lennen by composition, & Mechelen yeelded of it selfe, that done, he went to Bergen Henegon to help the Earle Lodowick, but by rea­son of the great murther in France, hee could no helpe his Brother, and so passed through Mechelen into Holland.

The second of September, the [Page]Earle Lodowick by composition yeel­ded the towne of Bergen to the Duke of Alua, vppon condition that hee should bee conuaied safelie vnto the borders of Germanie, which was performed.

The second of October Mechelen was forcibly taken & spoyled, wher­in many Burgers were murthred, & women and maides deflowred, be­cause they receaued the Prince of O­range into the towne.

The twenty of October Monsieur Dragon passed his men through the water at Southberland towards Der­gosen.

The thirteenth of Nouember, the Spaniards tooke Zutphen, where they vsed the Burgers very cruelly.

The twentie of Nouember Don Fredericke entred into Narden, where contrary to his faith and promise he [Page]murthered diuers of the Burgers, & burnt the towne.

year 1573 This yeare Don Fredericke came before Harlem.

The thirteenth of Iulie, Harlem yeelded to the Spaniards, committing themselues to the Kinges mercy, which they did for want of victuals.

The fourth of October the Castle of Ramekins in Zealand yeelded to the Prince of Orange, and not long after Gertrudenberg was taken by Poyet, Liefetenant to the Prince.

The eight of October, the Spaniards besieged Alcmar, but by reason of the water they were forced to leaue it.

The twelfth of October, the Earle of Bossu with a great Nauy of ships came before Enchehusen: where hee was taken, & sent prisoner to Horne.

In December the Duke of Alua went into Spaine.

year 1574 This yeare the King of Spayne sent Don Loys de requesentie (Com­mander of Saint Iacobs order, and of the house of the Dukes of Cosa) into the Low Countries to bee Go­uernour, he thought to haue raysed the Princes siege before Midleborow, but the twenty foure of Ianuarie af­ter, his mē were ouerthrown at Ber­gen. The sixt of Februarie Monsieur Dragon Gouernour of Midleburge yeelded vp the towne to the Prince of Orange.

The fift of Aprill, the Commaunder published a generall pardon within the towne of Brussels.

The twentie foure of Aprill, the Spaniards ouerthrew the Princes ar­mie at Mokerheye, their Generall be­ing Duke Christopher son to the Pal­sgraue of Rhein, Earle Lodowicke, and Earle Henry of Nassawe, who were neuer found eyther dead or a liue.

The twenty sixe of Aprill, the Spa­niards in Andwarpe cried, fuere, fuere, Viliacoes, because they would bee paid.

The xxvj. of May, the Spaniardes came again before Leyden, and besie­ged it, where before it they made 22. Bulwarkes.

At the same time the Princes sol­diers with certaine ships came be­fore Andwarpe, and there tooke cer­taine ships in the sight of the Com­mander.

The third of October, the towne of Leyden was miraculously relee­ued, [Page]and the siege raysed by meanes of Captaine Boyset with a Fleete of ships, that entered into it bywater.

In December, an assemblye was holden at Breda, betweene the Commaunder and the Prince and States of Holland and Zealand, to make a peace.

year 1575 This yeare the towne and castle of Bueren was by the Gouernour thereof deliuered vnto the Spaniards.

The same yeare Bomell was besie­ged the whole summer long.

The twelfth of Iulie, the Prince of Orange maried Charlote daughter to Monsieur de Monpensier within the towne of Brill.

The twelfth of August Shooneho­uen was by composition yeelded to the enemie.

The twentie eight of August Old-water was forcibly taken by the Spa­niards, [Page]& many of the Burgers mur­thered.

The eight of September, the Spaniards besieged Wert, & not long after it yeelded vp.

The twenty eight of September the Spaniardes passed the waters at Saint Anneslant, Duyuelant, and Phil­lipslant, where Boyset was slaine, there they tooke the fort of Bonnuene and besieged Zuriczee.

year 1576 This yeare the twentie of Fe­bruarie, the Princes souldiers tooke Krimpen.

The fift of march the Commander died in Brussels.

In May the Spaniardes tooke Zu­riczee, and not long after they left Zealand, and went to Aelst, and tooke the towne.

The twentie three of September, Monsieur de Hesse Gouernor of Brus­sels, [Page]and the Lorde-Glunes with the aide of the Burgers, tooke the prin­cipallest of the states, being in coun­cell within Brussels.

The twentie of October the Spani­ardes tooke Mastricke, by meanes of the Dutch Souldiers that lay in it, wherin they robbed, spoyled, & mur­thered without mercy.

The same day Don Iohn de Austria, came to Lutzenburgh, and was sent by the King of Spaine to bee Gouer­nour in the Low Countries.

The fourth of Nouember, was the furie of Andwarpe, which was done by the Spaniards, that issued out of the Castle into the towne, wherin they slew about 9500. men Burgers, and Souldiers, 4000. drowned with the Earle of Ouersteine, burnt sixe hun­dred houses, and ransomed the Bur­gers.

The eight of Nouember, peace was made at Gaunt betwene the Prince, & the States of Holland and Zealand, & the Spaniards.

The fift of Nouember, the towne of Valencia, caused the Dutch Soul­diers to depart out of the towne, and by appointment the Spaniardes deli­uered vp the Castle.

The ninth of Nouember the Earle of Krulx Gouernor of Flanders, besie­ged the Castle of Gaunt, which the Spaniards yeelded by composition.

year 1577 This yeare vppon the eighteene of Februarie, those of Vtrecht besie­ged the Castle, and compelled the Spaniards to yeeld it to Bossu.

The twentie seauen of February, the peace agreed vppon with Don Iohn, was proclaimed in Andwarpe.

The twentie of March the Spani­ards went out of the Castle of And­warpe, [Page]& the Prince of Chima kept it.

Vppon May day, Don Iohn was with great honor receaued into Brus­sels.

The eleauenth of Iuly, Don Iohn went to Mechelen, where hee sent for the Dutch Captaines of that towne, and of the towne and Castle of And­warpe, and commanded them to keep the townes for him. He sent likewise for the Prince of Chima, and in his place sent Monsieur Tourlon, & from thence he went to Namen.

The second of Iuly, betweene Sa­fimghen, and Hefimghen, there was a Fish taken of fiftie right foot long, & fortie foote thicke.

The twenty nine of Iuly, Don Iohn took the Castle of Namen, which was the cause of a new warre.

The first of August, Tourlon was taken in the Castle of Andwarpe, and [Page]his Souldiers driuen out, who with the high Dutchmen tooke the new towne, and there insconsed them­selues.

The twentie eight of August, Mon­sieur de Bours diliuered the castle vn­to the Burgers that broke it downe on the side that ioineth to the towne.

The twenty eight of September. the Prince of Orange entred into Andwarpe, and the 22. he road to Brus­sels, and the 24. hee was chosen Go­uernour.

The eighteene of October, those of Gaunt tooke the Duke of Aerschot prisoner, to get their priueledges a­gaine.

The same time also they tooke the Bishops of Ipre, and of Brugges, the Lord of Rassingen Campany, and the chiefe Baylie of Ipre and Cortricke.

The twentie one of Nouember, [Page]Duke Mathias entred into the Low-Countries to be their Gouernour.

The seauenth of December Don Iohn with his souldiers, were pro­claimed enemies to the King.

year 1578 This yeare vpon the eighteene of Ianuarie, Duke Mathias was sworne Gouernor within the town of Brussels.

The last of Ianuarie, the riters of Don Iohn de Austria ouerthrewe the States troupes hard by Namen, and tooke Giblon, Leuuen, Aerschot, Tenen, Diest, and Sichem.

The eight of Februarie, Amster­dam agreed with the States of Hol­land.

The twentie two of Aprill, the pa­cification of Gaunt was published & sworne in Andwarpe, and the Iesuits refusing to doe it, were by ship sent out of the towne.

The twentie of Iulie the Dutch souldiers that lay in Campe, yeelded vp the towne that was besieged by the Earle of Rennenburg, that held it for the States.

The first of August, the Spaniardes set vppon the States Souldiers by Rymenant, Bossu beeing their beadle: where Don Iohn lost many of his men.

The twenty foure of September, certain Wallons mutined vnder pre­tence of their pay, and by the help of Montigny made warre vppon Gaunt.

The same yeare the Gospell was openly preached throughout Brabant and Flaunders.

The first of October, Don Iohn de Austria, died of the plague, and in his place entred the Prince of Parma.

year 1579 This yeare in the month of Ia­nuarie, the Prince of Parma took the Castle of Weert, and then came to­wards Andwarpe, and so to Mastricht.

About the same time the Commis­sories of the States met at Kenlen, to intreat of peace.

The twenty nine of Iuly, the Spa­niardes tooke Mastricht by assault, and entred it by force.

The twenty of October Captaine La Noue tooke Meen againe, with the Castles of Halewin and Waerwick.

year 1580 This yere vpon the twenty sca­uen of Februarie, the Earle of Eg­mont took Cortright for the Spaniards.

In Aprill Mechelen was taken a­gaine for the States, by Monsieur Temple.

year 1581 Vpon the fourteene of Februa­rie, in the towne of Steenwicke, was releeued by the Lord of Nieuenort, & Coronell Norris, where many Spani­ards were slaine.

The twenty three of Iune, Breda by meanes of Fresin that lay prisoner in the Castle was betraied and deli­uered to the Spaniards.

The xviii. of August, the towne of Cambray was deliuered by the Duke of Alenson, which the Prince of Par­ma had besieged.

The seauenth of September End­houen was taken, and not long after taken againe from the Spaniards.

The fourth of October, the Prince of Parma tooke Dornicke by composi­tion, after hee had many times assal­ted it.

The twentie nine of October, [Page]Duke Mathias went out of the Low-Countries.

year 1582 This yeare vpon the ninteene of Februarie, the Duke Alenson by ship at riued in Andwarpe, and the twenty two of the same moneth, hee was sworne Gouernour of the Countrie of the States.

The eighteene of March the Prince of Conde was shotte into the heade within the towne of Andwarpe by one Iohn Iauregni.

The ninteene of Aprill the Prince of Parma besieged Andenard, & tooke it for want of aide.

The twentie three of Aprill Monsie­our de Tion, Tempel, and Monsieour de la Guard tooke Aelst.

The eleauenth of Iulie, Nicholas Zalcedo thought to haue slaine the Duke of Alenson, but hee was taken and brought to Paris, where vppon [Page]the twentie two of October, he was torne in peeces by foure horses.

The second of August, the Scots that lay in Liere betraied the towne, and deliuered it to the Prince of Parma.

The fifteene of August the Duke Alenson was receiued into the town of Gaunt as Earle of Flaunders.

The xxiii. of September, Lo­chem was deliuered by the Earle of Hollocke, wherin were three Earles.

The same moneth the Prince of Parma tooke Nieuenhouen.

year 1583 This yeare the seuenteene of Ia­nuarie, the French furie happened in Andwarpe, where the Duke Alenson vnder pretence of a muster meant to haue betraied it, in the which enter­prise he lost fifteene hundred French­men, besides hurt men & prisoners, and but 83. Burgers slaine,

The thirteenth of Februarie, the [Page]new Burse of Andwarpe was burnt.

In August the Spaniards tooke Dixmuyden, and in December they besieged Ipre.

The twenty foure of October, the Spaniards tooke Sas by Gent.

The thirteenth of October, the baylie of Wast deliuered the land of Wast to the Spaniards, and they of Andwarpe cut the Diches.

year 1584 In this yere in the month of Fe­bruarie, Aelst was deliuered to the Prince of Parma.

The twelfth of April the Prince of Parma tooke Ipre.

The tenth of Inne, the Prince of Parma besieged the sconce of Lillo, but hee was forced to leaue it with shame.

The tenth of Iuly, the Prince of Parma tooke Liefekins hooke.

The same day the Prince of Orange [Page]was slaine in Delf by one Balthazer Gerrats, the same month the States lost Herentales.

The sixteene of August, Dermond was deliuered to the Prince of Par­ma.

The twentic six of September, the towne of Gaunt for want of victnals yeelded to the Prince of Parma.

year 1585, This yeare Graue Holocke tooke Hertogenbosh, but hec was forced to leane it againe with some losse of his men.

The same yeare vppon Saint Mat­thews euening, the bridge by Calco was fully finished.

The tenth of March, Brussels for want of victuals agreed with the Prince of Parma.

The fourth of Aprill the ships that were set on fire, and sent by them of Andwarpe to fire the bridge, entred [Page]vnder it and did much hurt.

The same time the Hollanders, and Zealanders took in Liefskins hooke, S. Annes hooke, and Venten.

The seauenteene of Iuly, the towne of Mechelen for want of vic­tuals yeelded to the Prince of Parma.

The tenth of August an agreement was made betweene England and the Low Countries.

The eleuenth of August the Prince of Parma receaued the Golden Fleece at the bridge of Calloo on Brabant side.

The twenty seauen of August the Prince of Parma entred into And­warpe.

The second of September the bridge was broken.

The ninth of Nouember, the Di­ches of the Castle of Andwarpe were digged againe.

year 1586 This yeare about the beginning thereof the Earle of Lecester came in­to Holland, and the sixt of Februarie after was proclaimed Gouernour.

The sixt of Iune the towne of Graue by composition yeelded to the Prince of Parma.

The twenty nine of Iune he tooke Venlo likewise by composition.

The sixteene of Iuly the English­men tooke Axel in Flaunders.

The seuenteene of Iuly the Prince of Parma besieged the towne of Nuse, and the xxvj. of the same, hee tooke it by assault.

The tenth of December, at Limer a village lying by Tienen there rained blood vpon the Ise, in a gentlemans Orchard, and it fell so hot, that there with the Ise hissed, as if one had thrust a pipe of Lead into it, & sunke at the least a foot deepe into the Ise.

year 1587 This yere vpon the xvij. of Ia­nuarie, the Frenchmen traiterously yeelded vp the Castle of Woud by Bergen.

The same month the towne of De­uenter was betraied to the Spaniard, by Sir Edward Stanley.

The fourth of Iuly the towne of Gelder was betraied by a Scot cal­led Patron.

The last of Iulie, Rye was solde in Andwarpe for twelne Guilders, & wheat for fifteene guilders the quar­ter.

The ninth of August the towne of Sluce yeelded to the Prince of Parma, after he had shot 16000 Cannon shot at the towne.

The same yere died Augustus Lant­graue of Saxon.

year 1588 This yere the Queene of Scots was beheaded in England.

Not long before that, the Earle of Lecester returned againe into the low Countries.

The same yeare hapned the trouble before Medenblicke.

The same time the Lord of Buck­hurst came into the Low Countries in the Queene of Englands behalfe.

The same yeare in Iune the Earle of Hollocke tooke the house of Loon, & the Sconce of Enghelen in the water that goeth to Bosch, where Houtepen was slaine, and died at Hertogen­bushe.

The sixt of Iuly there was con­tētion in Vtrecht betweene the Earle of Newenare, and the Magistrates & Burgers.

About August & September, there was much talking of peace, where­vpon the Queene of England sent her Ambassadors out of England into [Page] Flanders, at the request of the Prince of Parma, but it was all but treason.

The twenty six of October, at Lay­den were executed Iaques Valmar. Cos­mo de Pescarenges, & Nicholas Mauld, and some for the same cause banished out of the towne.

The twentie three of December, Shenk tooke Bon.

About this time the Prince of Par­ma prepared diuers ships and flatte bottomed boates, at Andwarpe, and at Dunkerke, which did little profit or aide to the Spanish Fleet.

The xxvij. of Februarie, 1588. a woman in Dort was deliuered of iiij. men children at a birth, that were all liuing and christned, their names be­ing, Abraham, Isaac, Iacob and Samuel.

The tenth of March, Gertruden­berge fell in a muteny.

The xij. of Aprill, the Earle of Le­cester [Page]was discharged of his gouernmēt by open placart. About this time died the king of Denmarke.

The twentie eight of Aprill, a woman in Dort was deliuered of three children at one birth, and christned, Abraham, Sa­ra and Susanna.

About the middle of May, the Prince of Parma thought to haue put out of Dunkerke with a great Fleet of Ships, but the Hollanders kept him in.

At the same time the Queene of Eng­land prepared her Nauy in a readines, & made great preparation for the wars, although in the meane time a peace was intreated of.

The thirteenth of May, a great Ar­mie of Spanish ships set out of Lisbon for Gronie, whereof the like had ne­uer bin heard of, which was the Fleete that meant to haue done great hurt to England and the Low Countries, but [Page]God mercifully deliuered vs out of their hands.

In Iuly the muteny at Gertruden­berge was appeased.

The xiiij. of September the Earle of Lec ester died in England.

The same moneth Sir Thomas Can­dish an English Gentleman came out of Indie with a ship laden with gold and siluer, hauing sayled round about the world.

The vij. of October, there was great mutenie in Vtrecht, where Captaine Clarehagen was stabbed, but died not of that wound.

About this time the Prince of Parma besieged Bergen vp Zome, and went from it againe, not without both losse and shame.

About this time Sir Martin Shenk made a Sconce aboue the towne Bom­mell vpon Voorne.

The xix. of Nouember, the Prince of Parma departed from Bergen vpon Zone, after hee had besieged it for the space of sixe weekes.

The xxv. of September, Bon was deliuered vp to the Prince of Parma.

In October the Earle of Mansfelt besieged Watchtendour, and the xx. of December, hee agreed with the soul­diers that they should issue out all armed, with Ensignes displayed.

The thirteenth of December, the Duke of Guise was slain by the king of France, which the Guisart meant to haue done to him, and the next daie the Cardinall of Guise his Brother was likewise slaine.

year 1589 This yeare Gertrudenberge was besieged by the States, & long bat­tered, but in the end they left it off, & the Souldiers within it solde the towne for fifteene moneths pay vn­to [Page]the Prince of Parma, which they deliuered vpon the tenth of Aprill.

The thirteenth of Aprill the Prince of Parma tooke the house of Lobben, but within three dayes after hee lost it againe.

The seuenteene of May, the Spa­niard tooke the sconce of Deeueren by Heusden.

The twentie two of May, the Prince of Parma tooke the house of Hemart.

The twenty fiue of Iune he tooke the house of Blienbeeke.

The sixteene of Iuly he tooke the houses of Proyen & Brakel, but now are left againe, and cleane burnt with the Dorpe.

The fifteene of Iuly the Prince of Parma besieged Heusden, and from thence hee went with shame enough into France.

The first of August, Henry the third King of France was murthered by a Frier.

The eleauenth of August, Sir Mar­tin Shenke was drowned by Nimme­gen, thinking to haue taken the towne.

The twentie foure of August, the enemie tooke the house of Heel in Bo­melsweert.

year 1590 This yeare vppon the fourth of March, Graue Maurice tooke the towne of Breda, by meanes of a ship of turfes wherin were about 70. mē their leader beeing Captaine Argier of Lambrecht.

The xxvij. of September Hemert was yeelded to Graue Maurice.

The third of October hee likewise tooke the house of Heel.

The xxix, of October Steenberghen was yeelded to the States.

The same yeare in the moneth of March, Graue Charles came before the Sconce of Seuenbergen with a great force thinking to take it, but with shame and losse of almost 1000 men, he was constrained to leaue it.

year 1591 In Paris victuals were so deare, that it was compared to the destruc­tion of Ierusalem, for a townesman therein constrained by hunger, hung his wife and children, which done he set a bill vpon his own breast, wher­in he wrote the cause of that action, & then hanged himselfe, for at that time within the towne they eate Horses, Asses, Dogges, Cats, Rats, & Vine leaues, a pound of butter was solde for two Crownes, and an Egge for twelue solx, and great numbers died for hunger.

The same yeare vppon the twen­ty sixe of May, Sutphen was besieged [Page]and deliuered into the handes of Graue Maurice.

The thirty one of May, Deuenter was besieged, and after it had receaued 3700 shotte against it, they yeelded it vnto the States.

The twentie eight of Iune, Graue Maurice went before Delffile with three and thirtie great peeces, and the second of Iuly it was yeelded vnto him.

The fift of Iuly, hee came before the Sconce of Opslach, and with 160. shot battered it, which was yeelded to the States.

Vpon the seauenth of Iuly the soul­diers therein issuing disarmed.

The next day Graue Maurice went to the Sconce of Immentil, and after 36. shot at the same, they yeelded it vnto him vpon the eleauenth of Iuly.

The twenty foure of the same month fiue Cornets of horse of the Prince of [Page] Parmas troupes were ouerthrowne in Betue, wherof one was the Prince of Parmas Guard.

The twenty sixe and twenty seuen of Iuly, the Prince of Parma left the Sconce of Knodseburg.

The xix. of September Graue Maurice desieged Hulst, which the xxv. of the same month yeelded vnto him.

The xiiij. of October Kimmeghen was belieged, and th xxii. of the same month yeelded to Graue Maurice.

This yere Steenwicke yeelded vn­to Graue Maurice, year 1592 vppon the fift of Iuly.

The xxjj. of September, Couerden yeelded to the States.

This yeare vppon the xxviij. of March, year 1593 Graue Maurice with a great power went to besiege Gertruden­berge, and the vij. of Aprill the enemy yelded vp the Steelhofes Sconce, by [Page]composition.

The xxiiij. of Iune, the Bulwarke was takē by force by Captaine Haen and Buury, whereby the towne was forced to yeelde to Graue Maurice, who let the souldiers issue out with their armes, but no colours.

The xiiij. and xxj. of May, Graue Maurice wt 120. companies of foote, & xxvj. Cornets of horsemen departed from Swool to releeue Couerden, which had bin besieged for the space of sixe months together, by the Earle Harman and Verdugo, but hearing of the states forces, they left their forts, and departed, and so the towne was deliuered.

The xxij. of Iuly, Graue Maurice tooke the towne of Gronning.

This yeare vppon the xxviij. of March, year 1595 about nine of the clocke a [...] night the diche by Gorcum by a high [Page]water brake through, and ranne vn­der the Papendrecht.

The xxiij. of Iuly, they began to digge without the spuyport of Dort, to enlarge the towne.

The eleauenth of August foure & fortie Dunkerkers and Spaniards, were hanged by Roterdam.

The 2 of September, Earle Phillip of Nassau passed at Ramsburg ouer the Lip with fiue hundred men, where with other Earles hee fought most valiantly with Monsieur Dragons re­giment, in which sight, the said Earle Phillip, and the yong Earle of Solmes were slaine, yet Dragon lost thrice as many men as Graue Maurice did.

This yeare the seauenteene of A­prill Albertus Cardinall of Austria wan Callis from the French King. year 1596

The thirtie of Iulie, the English­men with certaine Holland, and Zea­lands [Page]ships by force took the town of Cadyz Malis in Spaine, which they spoiled, pilled, and burnt, bringing great treasure from thence.

The sixteene of Iuly, there was a Comet or blazing starre seene in the Low Countries.

The seuenteene of August the Car­dinal tooke Hulst in Flanders by com­position after he had lost 6000. of his best souldiers before the towne.

This yeare vppon the twentie foure of Ianuarie, year 1597 Graue Maurice wt sixe thousand men, met the enemy at Tuelsheheyde by Turenhoult, where he set vppon them, being a great num­ber, who beeing aduertised of his comming fled away, whome he fol­lowed, and hauing ouertaken them, he slew of them to the number of two thousand men, among the which, their Generall the Earle of Ferrara [Page]was one.

The eleauenth of March the towne of Amyens in France was by treason de­liuered to the Cardinall for the King of Spaine.

The nineteene of August the towne of Renisberg by composition was yeel­ded to the States.

The twentie foure of August the Cam­mille Sconce yeelded to Graue Maurice.

The second of September the towne of Meurs yeelded by composition vnto Graue Maurice.
