            <p>Users should be aware of the process of creating the TCP texts, and therefore of any assumptions that can be made about the data.</p>
            <p>Text selection was based on the New Cambridge Bibliography of English Literature (NCBEL). If an author (or for an anonymous work, the title) appears in NCBEL, then their works are eligible for inclusion. Selection was intended to range over a wide variety of subject areas, to reflect the true nature of the print record of the period. In general, first editions of a works in English were prioritized, although there are a number of works in other languages, notably Latin and Welsh, included and sometimes a second or later edition of a work was chosen if there was a compelling reason to do so.</p>
            <p>Image sets were sent to external keying companies for transcription and basic encoding. Quality assurance was then carried out by editorial teams in Oxford and Michigan. 5% (or 5 pages, whichever is the greater) of each text was proofread for accuracy and those which did not meet QA standards were returned to the keyers to be redone. After proofreading, the encoding was enhanced and/or corrected and characters marked as illegible were corrected where possible up to a limit of 100 instances per text. Any remaining illegibles were encoded as &lt;gap&gt;s. Understanding these processes should make clear that, while the overall quality of TCP data is very good, some errors will remain and some readable characters will be marked as illegible. Users should bear in mind that in all likelihood such instances will never have been looked at by a TCP editor.</p>
            <p>The texts were encoded and linked to page images in accordance with level 4 of the TEI in Libraries guidelines.</p>
            <p>Copies of the texts have been issued variously as SGML (TCP schema; ASCII text with mnemonic sdata character entities); displayable XML (TCP schema; characters represented either as UTF-8 Unicode or text strings within braces); or lossless XML (TEI P5, characters represented either as UTF-8 Unicode or TEI g elements).</p>

               <seg rend="decorInit">T</seg>He GRECIANS were the firſt that out of <hi>variety</hi> of <hi>action,</hi> and long experience of <hi>warre,</hi> reduced the knowledge of <hi>Arms</hi> into an <hi>Art</hi>; giving precepts for the <hi>ordering</hi> of Arms, and the <hi>embattelling of Armies.</hi>

The ROMANES, who were their <hi>Succeſ<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>ſours in time,</hi> ſo were they alſo of their <hi>precepts</hi>; breeding and inuring their youth to <hi>hardſhip,</hi> the uſe of <hi>Armes,</hi> and the ſtu<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>dies of the <hi>Art Military.</hi> So that by their countenance and <hi>practice</hi> therein, they not onely became <hi>powerfull</hi> and <hi>terrible</hi> to others: but in a word <hi>reigned</hi> as ſole <hi>Mo<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>narchs</hi> of this <hi>Mundane glory.</hi>

               <note n="a" place="margin">Plut. in Licur</note>LICVRGVS the Law-giver to SPARTA, ordred that no <hi>Epitaph</hi> ſhould be made, nor mans <hi>name</hi> remembred on his <hi>Tombe,</hi> except of him who had been a <hi>Souldier</hi>; as eſteeming them onely worthy of <hi>memo<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>ry.</hi> The <hi>Perſian</hi> ARTAXERXES, preferred <note n="b" place="margin">Plut. in Pelo<g ref="char:EOLunhyphen"/>pida.</note>PELOPIDAS, and the <hi>Thebane</hi> friendſhip before the reſt of GREECE. becauſe they were the <hi>beſt Souldiers.</hi> PHILIP of MA<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>CEDON, <hi>King</hi> of a poore Countrey, by <hi>teaching</hi> his <hi>people</hi> exactly the <hi>exerciſe of Arms,</hi> and practiſing a new <hi>diſcipline,</hi> not onely freed himſelf and Countrey from the <hi>oppreſſion</hi> of his <hi>enemies</hi>; but alſo laid the <hi>foundation</hi> of the MACEDONIAN <hi>glory.</hi>

            <p>By this, Right worſhipfull, you may in part diſcern the great eſteeme that <hi>An<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>tiquity</hi>

made of thoſe <hi>ſtudious</hi> in this <hi>Art.</hi> And ſo pleaſe you to compare the <hi>Hiſto<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>ries</hi> of the <hi>paſſed times,</hi> you may as in an <hi>Index</hi> behold how that the wel <hi>diſciplin'd</hi> have alwayes been the very <hi>Bulwarks and impalements</hi> of their Countreys. Where to the contrary, neglect of <hi>diſcipline,</hi> and the <hi>Art Military</hi> have been alwayes the fore<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>runners of deſtruction both to <hi>Province and people.</hi> I might be infinite in <hi>examples</hi> of this <hi>nature,</hi> but then I ſhould make my <hi>porch</hi> larger then my <hi>houſe.</hi> Therefore let ROMES remiſſeneſſe be a <hi>warning</hi> to <hi>poſte<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>rity</hi>; who as it had a ſlow <hi>gradation</hi> in its <hi>ariſe</hi> by <hi>virtue,</hi> ſo had it <hi>degrees</hi> of <hi>falling,</hi> by neglecting <hi>diſcipline</hi> and the <hi>Art Mili<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>tary,</hi> ſuffering it ſelf to be <hi>cruſhed</hi> and <hi>over<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>trodden</hi> by every <hi>Barbarous Nation.</hi>
            </p>
            <p>This as it <hi>reflects</hi> upon us a <hi>neceſsity,</hi> ſo it demonſtrates of how <hi>neceſſary conſe<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>quence</hi> the <hi>practice of Arms</hi> is: inducing and inviting all <hi>generous ſpirits</hi> to endea<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>vour the attainment of this <hi>Military skill.</hi> To acquire the which, the GRECIANS had their <hi>Tactick</hi> maſters, the ROMANES their <hi>Tribunes,</hi> and other inferiour <hi>Tutors</hi>

which taught them in <hi>Campus Martius</hi>; and we our <hi>Academies</hi> and <hi>Military Schooles</hi> of <hi>war,</hi> witnes our ARTILLERY GARDEN with the MILITARY and MAR<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>TIALL grounds, wherein the <hi>choice</hi> and <hi>beſt affected Citizens</hi> (and Gentry) are practiced and taught the <hi>Rudiments</hi> of our <hi>militia.</hi> In times of <hi>peace</hi> ſo fitting them, that they may be able to <hi>ſtand</hi> in the day of <hi>battell,</hi> to <hi>Gods glory,</hi> their <hi>own honours,</hi> and their <hi>Countreys good</hi> But leaving theſe to your more <hi>retyred</hi> and <hi>ſerious</hi> conſide<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>rations: be pleaſed to take notice that the GRECIANS, ROMANES, PERSIANS, and other <hi>Nations,</hi> had not onely their <hi>train<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>ings</hi> abroad, but they had alſo their <hi>Tri<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>umphs</hi> at home in <hi>Martiall and warlike wiſe all armed, treading out ſtately meaſures, to their Inſtruments of warre.</hi> Such <hi>Military exerciſes</hi> as theſe have you formerly per<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>formed, which induced a<note n="*" place="margin">

            <p>And ſuch as this, right <hi>worthy Souldiers,</hi> was our laſt <hi>exerciſe</hi> in <hi>Merchant-Taylors Hall,</hi> which is the <hi>ſubject</hi> of this book: the well <hi>contriving</hi> and <hi>exact performance</hi> whereof, induced many of the <hi>judicious ſpectators</hi> to deſire copies: which through ſeverall <hi>tranſcriptions</hi> became ſo imper<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>fect, that I was requeſted by many to bring it to the <hi>Preſſe,</hi> ſo to preſerve its <hi>Na<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>tive purity.</hi> This I was the more willing to ſuffer, by reaſon no more were to paſſe the <hi>print,</hi> then barely might ſerve ſuch <hi>Gentlemen</hi> who are deſirous of them, be<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>ing <hi>members</hi> of our own <hi>Company.</hi> As not being willing that ſo <hi>rough</hi> and <hi>unpoliſht</hi> a <hi>draught</hi> ſhould be expoſed to the <hi>publick view.</hi> Therefore hoping your wonted fa<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>vours,

               <seg rend="decorInit">T</seg>He number of <hi>Gentlemen</hi> em<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>ployed in this Exerciſe were <hi>fourſcore,</hi> that is to ſay, <hi>eighteen</hi> with <hi>Morions ſwords</hi> and <hi>Targets,</hi> which encountred 9. againſt 9. Secondly, 22. <hi>Sarracens,</hi> that is to ſay, a <hi>Captain, Lieutenant, En<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>ſigne,</hi> one <hi>Sergeant, Pipe,</hi> a <hi>Turkie-drum,</hi> and 16. <hi>ſe<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>lect Sarracens.</hi> Thirdly, 40. <hi>of the moderne Armes.</hi> A <hi>Captain, Lieutenant, Enſigne,</hi> 2. <hi>Sergeants,</hi> 1. <hi>Phife, and</hi> 2. <hi>Drummes,</hi> 16. <hi>Muskettiers in</hi> Buffe<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>coats, and Beaver Morians, and 16. <hi>Pikemen,</hi> com<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>pleatly armed in white Corſlets, whole Pikes and Morians.</p>

               <head>Targettiers.</head>
               <p>The Cornets having once play'd over, the <hi>Tar<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>gettiers</hi> 9. in a company marched into the Hall, and without delay oppoſed each other; drawing

into <hi>figures</hi> 9. <hi>againſt</hi> 9. performing 10. ſeverall <hi>forms,</hi> making their <hi>encounters</hi> and varying their <hi>figures,</hi> all according to the diſtinct ſounds of their muſick. Having performed their ſeverall encounters upon each <hi>figure,</hi> they ſhook hands, and ſaluted each other, then joyntly together they did their <hi>obeyſance to the Nobility, Aldermen,</hi> and <hi>Gentry,</hi> and laſtly fell off in the nature of a <hi>Sillabans</hi> and ſo quit the Hall.</p>
               <p>Next marched into the Hall, Captain <hi>Mulli-Aben-Achmat</hi> with his <hi>Saracens</hi> in great ſtate, their muſick was a <hi>Turky Drumme,</hi> and a hideous noiſe making <hi>pipe</hi> (made of a <hi>Buffolas</hi> horn:) The one half of the Saracens were armed with ſhort <hi>Barbary guns</hi> and <hi>Cymiters,</hi> the other half with <hi>ſteel Targets,</hi> and <hi>Cymiters</hi> on their thighs: ſome of the chiefeſt of them had broad <hi>Turky daggers</hi> at their girdles, and all of them habited after the <hi>Perſian</hi> and <hi>Turconian</hi> maner. Their names in their places as they marched (for the better under<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>ſtanding of the Reader) are put into the Engliſh tongue.</p>

                  <pb n="3" facs="tcp:1159:6"/>The <hi>Captain</hi> and <hi>Lieutenant</hi> marched with large <hi>Pole-axes</hi> in their hands, <hi>Cymeters</hi> on their thighs, <hi>Battle Axes</hi> hanging on their armes, and <hi>broad dag<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>gers</hi> at their girdles, after the maner of the Coun<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>trey. The <hi>Enſigne</hi> with his <hi>colours</hi> on a ſtaffe 10. foot long, ar<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>med with a <figure/> 
                  <hi>ſteele halfe moon</hi> on the upper end. The <hi>Enſigne</hi> (as in the margin) is a <hi>pennon Azure charged with an Increſſant Argent on the dexter Angle: from the ſini<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>ſter Bend<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>waies, a motto in the Arabi<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>an tongue and Characters, BISMI-AL<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>LI VAL MAHOMET</hi> The Engliſh, In the name of <hi>Alli and Mahomet.</hi>

                  <pb n="4" facs="tcp:1159:7"/>Theſe <hi>Sarracens</hi> marched into the Hall in form of a <hi>Herſe</hi> as in the figure 1. entring in at the skreene, and ſo marching about the Hall: and be<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>ing again come to the lower end thereof, they there made an Alt; and without any directions drew up their diviſions to the right of each other: forming a <hi>Grecian Phalanx</hi> as in figure 2. In this form he moved them ſome few paces, and then <hi>faced</hi> about again, ſuperviſing them with a ſtately ſurvay, they in the interim moving into an <hi>uneven fronted battaile</hi> as in figure 3. This done, he moved forwards ſome few paces, and again made Alt.                   <p>Note that the <hi>firſt ſtrein</hi> of the <hi>poſture Almayne</hi> was playd <hi>twice over</hi>: and the <hi>laſt</hi> ſtreyn <hi>twice over,</hi> after this manner, the whole tune was doubly plaied twice over, wherewith conſorted and end<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>ed both the <hi>poſtures of Muskets</hi> and <hi>Pikes</hi> together. The which the <hi>Chriſtian Captain</hi> perceiving, he cau<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>ſed his Muskettiers to <hi>move up between his Pikes,</hi> and preſent <hi>powring out his ſhott by two Ranks together.</hi> The Pikes alſo at the ſame time, <hi>charging them home:</hi> which the <hi>Turcomen</hi> people, no longer able to indure, they quit the Hall (the ſame way they entred) MULLEY ACHMAT and his <hi>Lieutenant</hi> making good the Retreit with their <hi>Symiters</hi> in their hands.</p>
               <p>
                  <pb n="40" facs="tcp:1159:25"/>The <hi>Saracens</hi> thus forced out of the Hall, the <hi>two laſt ranks</hi> of <hi>Captain Vens</hi> Company face a<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>bout, and are privately led away by <hi>Lieutenant Sheppard,</hi> either to lie in <hi>ambuſh,</hi> or to attend upon the <hi>Saracens deſignes</hi>; as opportunitie ſhould beſt offer it ſelf.</p>
               <p>The <hi>Captain</hi> in the mean time <hi>facing</hi> the Muſ<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>kettiers to the right and left outward, the Pikes to the right and left inwards, cauſeth them to <hi>in<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>terchange ground</hi> (This brings the <hi>Muskettiers</hi> again to the <hi>Flanks</hi>) Then the drums beating a March, the <hi>Captain</hi> leads the Company in <hi>Diviſi<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>ons</hi> once about the Hall, and marcheth out at the lower end by the skreene into the yard.</p>
               <p>
                  <hi>Mulley Achmatt</hi> having again <hi>ordered his Body</hi> in the Garden, ſends a ſpie to ſee what the Chri<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>ſtians are doing; and finding them all gone out of the Hall, ſurmiſed they were fled; And there<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>upon <hi>Mulley Achmatt</hi> returns with great <hi>Triumph,</hi> and with much vaunting inſolence marcheth round about the Hall, with his Souldiers in <hi>form of a Herſe,</hi> as you may perceive by the Figure numbred with 12. Now being at the lower end of the Hall, he made an Alt, when immediately up<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>on a ſigne given, the <hi>Turks doubled their half-files to the right intire,</hi> the which produced Figure 13. On which form he marched, and with a ſtately ſurvay, beholding the <hi>Order</hi> of his <hi>Souldiers,</hi> and the countenance of the Spectatours, he again made Alt, obſerving his former order, in making and marching on theſe enſuing figures.</p>

                  <pb n="42" facs="tcp:1159:26"/>After that MULLEY-ABEN-ACHMAT had made and marched on all theſe ſeverall <hi>Figures,</hi> at laſt with great inſolence, he <hi>wheeled his battell about to the left,</hi> his <hi>body</hi> being in form of the 17<hi rend="sup">th</hi> Figure; He with a careleſſe garbe viewing the Spectators, and with eyes darting forth diſdaine, demon<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>ſtrating a kinde of haughty ſcorn (by the geſture of his body) againſt the ſuppoſed <hi>Temeritie</hi> of the <hi>Chriſtians,</hi> whom he beleeved to have been <hi>fled.</hi> But they to the contrary all this time kept good <hi>eſpiall</hi> upon him, ſuffering him to <hi>ſwell</hi> rather by <hi>opinion</hi> then <hi>fortune.</hi>
               </p>
               <p>For even now when his inſolence was at the higheſt, he heard the <hi>Chriſtians drums beating a March: Captain</hi> VENS Company approaching ſo neare, that they were now entring the Hall by the Skreen. Aſſoon as they were entred the <hi>Chriſti<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>ans drew into Battalia,</hi> the drums beating a prepa<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>rative they advance forwards, and <hi>charge the Sa<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>racens,</hi> and they perceiving their numbers to be ſo ſmall, as willingly meet them.</p>
               <p>
                  <hi>Captain</hi> VEN had all his <hi>Musketts</hi> in the front of his <hi>Pikes,</hi> and the enemie his <hi>battells</hi> were <hi>ranged</hi> as in Figure 17. The ſhot playd thick on both ſides, as ſometimes being in <hi>front,</hi> ſometimes on the <hi>flanks,</hi> ſometimes again in the <hi>Reere,</hi> other-whiles in the <hi>midſt.</hi> The <hi>Politick Captains,</hi> ſtill varying of their <hi>formes</hi> on either ſide, as might make beſt for their own <hi>advantages,</hi> each ſtriving for the <hi>Garland of victory.</hi> But by this time the <hi>Ambuſh</hi> (under the conduct of <hi>Lieutenant</hi> SHEP<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>PARD) was ready to fall on: and therefore <hi>Captain</hi> VEN cauſed his drums beat a <hi>Retrait,</hi> firing and

charging Pikes retreating, thereby to draw the <hi>Turks</hi> from their ſtrength into <hi>diſorder.</hi> The <hi>Turks</hi> perceiving the <hi>Chriſtians</hi> to give ground, charge fiercely on. But the <hi>Chriſtian Captain</hi> made but a politick <hi>retreat,</hi> thereby to draw the <hi>Turks</hi> from their advantage of ground, that ſo the <hi>am<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>buſhment</hi> might have opportunity to <hi>charge them in the Reere.</hi> This as it was contrived fell out ac<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>cordingly. For the <hi>Lieutenant</hi> who all this while had kept himſelf and ſouldiers cloſe; now per<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>ceiving his opportunity: <hi>Ranged all his Musket<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>tiers in front,</hi> and with all poſſible ſecrecie, drew <hi>cloſe up to the Reere</hi> of the Enemie; Then all on a ſudden <hi>powring out a great ſalue of ſhot,</hi> he there<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>with even <hi>rent</hi> and <hi>tore</hi> the order of the Enemie.</p>
               <p>Now the <hi>Chriſtians charge both in Front and Reere</hi> the <hi>Turcoman Lieutenant</hi> with an undaunted courage, faced his half-files about, and with an unparalleld reſolution ſingled out the <hi>Chriſtian Lieutenant,</hi> with his well tempered Cymiter laying about him like a <hi>Turk.</hi> Inſomuch that <hi>Lieutenant Sheppard</hi> with his <hi>Partizan</hi> had much ado with all his skill and dexteritie, to keep him at the point. The other ſtriving to hew out a way before him, even through <hi>ſteel, fire, and flame:</hi> with his well cut<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>ting <hi>Fauchion</hi> ſlicing and paring the <hi>Chriſtian Lieutenants</hi> Partizan, as if it had been a a <hi>wodden dagger,</hi> and not a compoſure of ſteel. Neverthe<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>leſſe the <hi>Chriſtian Lieutenant</hi> perceiving the <hi>Tur<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>coman</hi> to be a proper perſonage, and not willing to deſtroy ſo goodly a preſence. He therefore ſtood politickly on the defenſive, whilſt the o<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>ther tired himſelf by his own fury.</p>
               <p>
                  <pb n="44" facs="tcp:1159:27"/>All this while the Souldiers are likewiſe at it with their <hi>ſhort guns, ſwords and targets,</hi> againſt the <hi>Chriſtians</hi> with their <hi>Muskets and whole Pikes,</hi> where we will leave them a while ſtriving like <hi>con<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>trary elements,</hi> and return into the <hi>Front</hi> to ſee how MULLEY-ACHMAT behaved himſelf againſt the <hi>Chriſtian Captain,</hi> who as I foreſhewed had gi<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>ven back purpoſely to draw the <hi>Turk</hi> from his ad<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>vantage of ground, that ſo his <hi>Lieutenant</hi> might the more commodiouſly give on in the Reere.</p>
               <p>The which accordingly taking effect, he gave a <hi>freſh charge in the front,</hi> at which the <hi>Saracens</hi> be<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>gan to ſtagger, perceiving themſelves to be <hi>dou<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>bly charged</hi> in Front and Reere.</p>
               <p>
                  <hi>Mully Aben</hi> ſeeing his people began to waver, meant to doe ſomething in perſon, ſo to <hi>re-inforce his Battell,</hi> and therewithall caſting away his <hi>Pole-axe,</hi> betooke himſelfe to his <hi>Battell-ax</hi> and <hi>Target</hi>; therewith working wonders, <hi>forcing the heads</hi> of the beſt armed Pikes to give him way, that ſo he might encounter the <hi>Chriſtian Captain.</hi> Who at the ſame time ſuperviſing his <hi>Battels</hi> (as being carefull to prevent <hi>all croſſe accidents of Warre</hi>) he ſaw what havock the <hi>Turk</hi> made in perſon. Where<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>upon ſingling him out, between them two began a fierce fight.</p>
               <p>The <hi>Turke</hi> at the firſt encounter, receiving a wound in the hand from the <hi>Chriſtian Captain,</hi> wherewithall being ſo much the more enraged, he endeavoured to get within him, intending to have <hi>ſtabd him with a</hi>

It was given him by the great King of <hi>Maccaſſar</hi> for a preſent, for ſaving his life when they were hunting and killing the wilde Bore, who had elſe killed the King.</note> 
                  <hi>poyſoned Creeſe</hi> (which he continually wore at his ſide) hoping with his fall to conclude the <hi>victory.</hi> But the <hi>wary Chriſtian</hi>

perceiving his fury, held him cloſe to it, ſtill keeping the point of his weapon at his breaſt.</p>
               <p>
                  <hi>Inraged</hi> ACHMAT <hi>even foming with anger</hi> that he could not work his deſigne: reſolved for his <hi>laſt refuge</hi> with the remains of his <hi>over-wearied Turks,</hi> to break through the <hi>Battell</hi> of the <hi>Chriſti<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>ans.</hi> But the <hi>vigilant Captain</hi> having drawn all his Pikes in Front <hi>cloſely ſerried</hi> together, kept them ſo cloſe up, that they could not make the leaſt pe<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>netration. Whereupon being quite out of heart, with joynt conſent they <hi>cryed for quarter,</hi> after the <hi>Turkey maner</hi> caſting their weapons on the ground, and laying their <hi>left hands</hi> on their <hi>heads,</hi> with a loud voice <hi>crying, Saybe-Sallam.</hi>
               </p>
               <p>The <hi>Chriſtian Captain</hi> remembring how vali<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>antly they had beaved themſelves in fight, took compaſſion on them, and <hi>diſarming them,</hi> com<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>manded them to paſſe through between his Files into the <hi>Reere. Lieutenant Sheppard</hi> in like maner with his Souldiers following them, placing his Souldiers in the <hi>Reere of the Turks.</hi> So that the <hi>Chriſtians</hi> had 4. <hi>ranks,</hi> 2. <hi>Ranks in the Front, and</hi> 2. <hi>Ranks in the Reere</hi> of the <hi>Captive Turks.</hi> They being in 2. Ranks in the midſt of the Conquerors. Then the <hi>Chriſtian Captain</hi> cauſed the firſt Rank of <hi>Turks</hi> to move between the firſt and ſecond Ranks in the <hi>Front.</hi> The ſecond Rank of <hi>Turks,</hi> between the third and fourth Ranks in the <hi>Reere.</hi> Being content himſelf to have gained the <hi>victory,</hi> he took onely the <hi>Captain</hi> MULLEY-ABEN-ACHMAT for his priſoner. MULLEY-SHECK the <hi>Turkey Lieutenant</hi> being <hi>Lieutenant Sheppards</hi> priſoner, ABEN-ABDELLA the <hi>Turkey Enſigne</hi>

being priſoner to <hi>Enſigne Gould,</hi> the reſt of the <hi>Turks</hi> being equally divided amongſt the <hi>Souldi<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>ers,</hi> every <hi>two Souldiers</hi> having <hi>one Turkey priſoner</hi> between them: the <hi>Captain</hi> thus bountifully re<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>warding his skilfull and conquering Souldiers.</p>
               <p>This being performed, the <hi>Captain</hi> led forth his Company again in diviſions (the <hi>Turks</hi> being <hi>pinioned with peeces of Match.</hi>) After the <hi>Captain, marched</hi> dejected MULLEY ACHMAT; Then a diviſion of Muskettiers being but two in Rank, and a <hi>Turkey priſoner</hi> between them, every Rank having one in like maner. Then marched <hi>Enſigne Gould</hi> at the head of the <hi>firſt diviſion of Pikes,</hi> diſ<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>playing his <hi>Enſigne</hi> in <hi>token of victory.</hi> ABEN AB<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>DELLA being led, and the <hi>Saracen Enſigne</hi> being carried after him. Laſtly, after the <hi>Reere diviſion</hi> of Muskets marched <hi>Lieutenant Sheppard,</hi> leading with him his priſoner bold MULLEY-SHECK. In this triumphing maner, <hi>Captain</hi> VEN led his Company thrice about the Hall, the Drums beat<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>ing a March: where it was a goodly ſight to ſee, how every Souldier was enriched with one ſpoyle or other, the which they carried in triumphing maner, ſome having <hi>Cymiters,</hi> ſome <hi>Barbary guns,</hi> others having <hi>Targets,</hi> but all ſome thing, beſides this, the Souldiers were mightily enriched, by the <hi>Iewels</hi> that they found about them, for theſe were not of thoſe <hi>poore roving Saracens,</hi> but a ſelect Company that had enriched themſelves by the <hi>ſpoiles</hi> of many others. Thus having marched about the Hall the third time, being come to the Skreen, the <hi>Captain</hi> made a ſigne, the <hi>Drums beat a Troop,</hi> the <hi>Pikes advance,</hi> and the <hi>Ranks cloſe for<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>ward

to their Order.</hi> This done, the diviſions are drawn up in <hi>Battalia,</hi> then the <hi>Pikes ſtand,</hi> and the <hi>Muskettiers advance into a Horne Battell.</hi> Laſtly, being in this form, the Drums continuing their Troop, the whole body advanceth forward into the middle of the Hall, then the Drums ſtriking an Alt, the whole Body makes a ſtand, ordering their Armes. Then the <hi>Captain and Lieutenant</hi> as at the firſt take forth Mr. <hi>Richard Lacy</hi> (the third man from the Front of <hi>Lieutenant Bariff</hi> his File) <hi>trooping</hi> him between them into the <hi>Van</hi> before the <hi>midſt</hi> of the <hi>Front</hi> of <hi>Muskettiers,</hi> there doing their ſeverall duties to the <hi>Nobilitie</hi> as formerly; The Souldier began this enſuing Speech.</p>

               <p>After the ſpeech thus ended, duty being done, and the Souldier returned to his place, the <hi>Captain</hi>

cauſed the <hi>Drums</hi> to beat a <hi>Troop,</hi> and the <hi>Pikes</hi> to move forwards even with the <hi>Front of Musket<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>tiers.</hi> Then the <hi>Captain</hi> makes a ſigne, the <hi>Drums beat a March,</hi> and the Company marcheth again in diviſions, The <hi>Captain</hi> firſt, and the Ranks of Souldiers following, doing a <hi>ſhort Souldier-like obeyſance</hi> to the <hi>Nobility</hi> as they paſt by them. The <hi>Enſigne</hi> onely <hi>baſing his point:</hi> In this order march<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>ing forth of the Hall, where the <hi>Turks</hi> found ſo good <hi>quarter</hi> and kind uſage, that now they are all turned <hi>Chriſtians,</hi> leaving that courſe of life, and are now either <hi>Merchants</hi> or <hi>Shopkeepers</hi> for the moſt part.</p>
