            <p>The EEBO-TCP project was divided into two phases. The 25,363 texts created during Phase 1 of the project have been released into the public domain as of 1 January 2015. Anyone can now take and use these texts for their own purposes, but we respectfully request that due credit and attribution is given to their original source.</p>
            <p>Users should be aware of the process of creating the TCP texts, and therefore of any assumptions that can be made about the data.</p>
            <p>Text selection was based on the New Cambridge Bibliography of English Literature (NCBEL). If an author (or for an anonymous work, the title) appears in NCBEL, then their works are eligible for inclusion. Selection was intended to range over a wide variety of subject areas, to reflect the true nature of the print record of the period. In general, first editions of a works in English were prioritized, although there are a number of works in other languages, notably Latin and Welsh, included and sometimes a second or later edition of a work was chosen if there was a compelling reason to do so.</p>
            <p>Image sets were sent to external keying companies for transcription and basic encoding. Quality assurance was then carried out by editorial teams in Oxford and Michigan. 5% (or 5 pages, whichever is the greater) of each text was proofread for accuracy and those which did not meet QA standards were returned to the keyers to be redone. After proofreading, the encoding was enhanced and/or corrected and characters marked as illegible were corrected where possible up to a limit of 100 instances per text. Any remaining illegibles were encoded as &lt;gap&gt;s. Understanding these processes should make clear that, while the overall quality of TCP data is very good, some errors will remain and some readable characters will be marked as illegible. Users should bear in mind that in all likelihood such instances will never have been looked at by a TCP editor.</p>
            <p>The texts were encoded and linked to page images in accordance with level 4 of the TEI in Libraries guidelines.</p>
            <p>Copies of the texts have been issued variously as SGML (TCP schema; ASCII text with mnemonic sdata character entities); displayable XML (TCP schema; characters represented either as UTF-8 Unicode or text strings within braces); or lossless XML (TEI P5, characters represented either as UTF-8 Unicode or TEI g elements).</p>

            <p>The Fyrſte is called Dauids Pſalter, which conteineth thries Fifty Pſalmes. The ſeconde is called the Pſalter of our Ladie, conteining thryes Fyfty Aues. The thyrd is called
<pb facs="tcp:7800:3"/>the Pſalter of Ieſu, or the inuoca<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>tion of Ieſu, conteining xv. prin<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>cipal petitions, which x. times re<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>peted, make alſo thryes Fyfty. In the whiche Pſalter and inuoca<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>tion, is the glorious name of our Sauiour Ieſu called vpon iiij. C. and Fyfty times. whoſoeuer vſeth to ſay it, truſt they verily, that they ſhal finde therby ſpecial helpe to reſiſt tentation, and haue encreaſe of grace &amp; vertue by the ſinguler helpe of Ieſu. Of this bleſſed name S. Peter in y<hi rend="sup">e</hi> Actes of the Apoſtles ſayth: There is none other name vnder heauen giuen to men, in the which it be<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>houeth vs to be ſaued.</p>

            <p>And our Sauiour ſaith in the Goſpel of Saint Ihon, that we ſhoulde make our petitions in his name, whiche is the Media<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>tour of our ſaluation, whoſe glo<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>rious viſion and moſt amorous fruition in the celeſtial glorie ſhal be our perpetual ioye and incom<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>prehenſible conſolation.</p>
            <p>Here is to be noted (as it is ſaid before) that the xv. principal peti<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>tions muſt be ſaied eche one by themſelfe, ten times, like as they ſhal be ſette forth in this booke by ordre. And ye may ſaie them vpon your ten fingers, or vpon ten beades, or els reade them as

            <p>VNto ſuch, as haue none op<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>portunitie to ſaie the whole Pſalter together, it is good that they faie the firſt v. pe<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>titions one daie, and the ſecond v. another day, and the laſt v. ano<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>ther day, &amp; ſo in three dayes they ſhal ſay y<hi rend="sup">e</hi> whole Pſalter.             <head>Here foloweth a holſome doctrine, howe to reſiſt &amp; ouercome the ghoſtly tentations of the Fende.</head>
            <p>DOctours do write, y<hi rend="sup">t</hi> in ſpiritual tentations we ſhould behaue ouerſelfe other wyſe, than in carnal tentations. For carnal tentations we ought to reſiſt &amp; wreſtle with them: but we may not do ſo in ſpi<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>ritual tentations. wyſely and diſ<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>cretely we muſt reſiſt them, but in no wiſe wreſtle with the<g ref="char:cmbAbbrStroke">̄</g>: as thus. when the enemie purteth a motio<g ref="char:cmbAbbrStroke">̄</g> of infidelitie, reaſon not with him: &amp; likewyſe when he caſteth a ſug<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>geſtion of deſperation, ſtryue not with him, but vſe this medicine.</p>
            <p>Suſpend your reaſon, reſtraine al your ſenſes, and plucke vp al your ſpirites: &amp; as the motio<g ref="char:cmbAbbrStroke">̄</g> cometh, ſo let it paſſe, without ſirife. If it be only of the diſpoſition of our cor<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>rupt
<pb facs="tcp:7800:30"/>nature, this is ſufficient, if it be vſed. If it come of the enemie, he wil not leaue ſo, but he wil cleaue otherwyſe, &amp; worke more trouble. Than after y<hi rend="sup">e</hi> counſel of Doctours, vſe this remedie: Diſſunble, &amp; ſhew yourſelf to ſet it at nought, though it be great: &amp; lift vp your mynd to God, remembring his tendre mer<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>cie in the redemption of man, and how it is his ordinance, with ſuch tentations and paines to proue his ſeruantes, to whom be entendeth to giue the crowne of glorie. But if the enemie be fierce and wil not ceaſſe for this (as he is moſt ſubtill and crafty) tha<g ref="char:cmbAbbrStroke">̄</g> meeke your ſolfe to God, &amp; offre yourſelfe to fuffre for his loue (&amp; for y<hi rend="sup">e</hi> fruit of penance for your ſinnes) gladly &amp; with thanks of heart, all paines, y<hi rend="sup">t</hi> it ſhall pleaſe his grace to ſende you. And with

This vertue of mekenes, &amp; confeſſion of the name of Ieſu in heart &amp; worde, the enemie may not abide. For al<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>though for a time he wil pretende &amp; ſemble, as though he were not a<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>baſhed for that vertue &amp; name, as the Serpent, of which Scripture ſaith, that for a time ſhe wil ſtoppe her eares, &amp; yet by the worde of the enchanter in co<g ref="char:cmbAbbrStroke">̄</g>cluſion ſhe is ouer<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>come &amp; taken: ſo certanily y<hi rend="sup">e</hi> enemie (y<hi rend="sup">e</hi> holy name named) is ouercome, although he wil not be knowe<g ref="char:cmbAbbrStroke">̄</g>, but ſo<g ref="char:cmbAbbrStroke">̄</g>time will make inſurrectio<g ref="char:cmbAbbrStroke">̄</g> more fiercely, after y<hi rend="sup">t</hi> holy name ſpoken. Then ſtrongly purſewe him with

               <p>A certaine perſon there was, whiche by the ſpace of two yeares &amp; more was troubled with ſuche motions ofte<g ref="char:cmbAbbrStroke">̄</g>times by water &amp; by lande. He had motions to deſpera<g ref="char:EOLhyphen"/>tion, &amp; to y<hi rend="sup">e</hi> moſt abhominable that may be, to deſtroy himſelfe both by water, &amp; otherwyſe.
