."\ This "readme" file contains comments on the conventions used in encoding
."\ the text, together with some definitions for a unix environment.

."\ The idylls can be printed, or searched, or edited using standard
."\ editors, on any system. If you have a unix system, the encoding used
."\ here will produce an acceptable listing of the text.

."\ The individual idylls can be printed using a command of the form
."\     cat readme IDYLL | troff -eqn -me
."\ on a unix system, where the word IDYLL is replaced by the filename of
."\ one of the idylls.

."\ The encoding of the text is very simple. A new physical line is used for
."\ each verse line. Verse paragraphs after the first in an idyll are indented
."\ 2 spaces. There is only one space after the end of a sentence in mid-line.
."\ The emdash is encoded as two dashes with a space before and after. A
."\ verse paragraph that begins in the middle of a line is indented to
."\ where the line would otherwise have been joined to the preceding one.

."\ The nroff/troff font change operator is used to produce italics.
."\ This is done via \fI to change to italics and \fP to change back.

."\ The eqn preprocessor is used to produce letters with diacritical marks.
."\ The following definitions are used. Printed output is not pretty as eqn
."\ does not do this well, but the encoding is unambiguous. These encoded
."\ symbols appear as a name preceded and followed by #. For example,
."\     Gorlo#ium#s
."\ is Gorlois with an umlaut over the i.
